简介:They call themselves the Indians. Shawn, a magnetic rock star; Corey, part Indian, whose heritage gave the movement its name; Billy, a brilliant young scientist; and Joanna, a pretty runaway "army brat" who survives on pot and sex. Through the experiences of four young revolutionaries, this macabre and moving adventure brings an all-too-possible... more 籪uture into shattering focus. ?less
简介:"In this forgotten treatise, preserved largely in medieval translations into Arabic and Latin, the greatest medical scientist of antiquity investigates the relationship between conscious and unconscious movements. He looks at the structure of the tongue and the oesophagus, and asks why mental perceptions can have physical effects on the body. Some of his questions still trouble modern scientists, although they would not accept most of his answers. The extensive Introduction and Commentary explain the medical background for non-medical specialists, and discuss the place of this treatise and of anatomy in medieval medicine down to Leonardo da Vinci. As well as being the first English translation of this important work, this is also the first comparative study of medieval translations of the same ancient text, and is based on new editions and collations of all three. The Commentary pays special attention to the linguistic elements involved in making these translations"--Provided by publisher.
简介:"The son of a musician, Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) tried at first to enter a monastery before engaging the skills that made him the foremost scientist of his day. Though he never left Italy, his inventions and discoveries were heralded around the world. Most sensationally, his telescopes allowed him to reveal a new reality in the heavens and to reinforce the astounding argument that the Earth moves around the Sun. For this belief, he was brought before the Holy Office of the Inquisition, accused of heresy, and forced to spend his last years under house arrest."--BOOK JACKET. "Of Galileo鈥檚 three illegitimate children, the eldest best mirrored his own brilliance, industry, and sensibility, and by virtue of these qualities became his confidante. Born Virginia in 1600, she was thirteen when Galileo placed her in a convent near him in Florence, where she took the most appropriate name of Suor Maria Celeste. Her loving support, which Galileo repaid in kind, proved to be her father鈥檚 greatest source of strength throughout his most productive and tumultuous years. Her presence, through letters which Sobel has translated from their original Italian and woven into the narrative, graces her father鈥檚 life now as it did then."--BOOK JACKET. "Galileo鈥檚 Daughter dramatically recolors the personality and accomplishment of a mythic figure whose seventeenth-century clash with Catholic doctrine continues to define the schism between science and religion. Moving between Galileo鈥檚 grand public life and Maria Celeste鈥檚 sequestered world, Sobel illuminates the Florence of the Medicis and the papal court in Rome during the pivotal era when humanity鈥檚 perception of its place in the cosmos was being overturned."--BOOK JACKET.
简介:The chapters of this volume explore the intimate relations of society, language and mind: the development of each of these depends on the contribution of the other two. In this sense they are co-genetic: mind has recently been described by the famous neuro-scientist, Susan Greenfield, as 'personalized brain.' The development of human mind depends on what it experiences; for human beings, experience goes beyond sensation: it is made of meaning, and interpretation/meaning, in turn, is construed by the various semiotic modalities, of which language is perhaps the most flexible and most pervasive. But language has itself evolved in the course of attempts to reach an 'other.' By shaping the nature of communication, human relations shape also the nature of language; meanings exchanged in verbal interaction become a major force in shaping forms of consciousness; and our consciousness reveals itself in our cultural practices, our ways of being, doing and saying.

简介:There is no doubt that environmental policies have developed enormously from the beginning of the eighties up until now. These policies have served as a test ground for many policy concepts, which have been implemented in other areas since the beginning of the nineties: in evaluation, monitoring, implementation improvement schemes, contracting or redistribution. They opened up the way for new insights into the field of multilevel governance, new administrative arrangements and 鈥?more recently 鈥?the rediscovery of property and use rights as well as global and individual quota-regimes. This evolution has been closely documented by policy scientists and their work has occasionally greatly influenced ongoing governmental practice as well as the evolution of analytical frameworks and skills of policy science as a whole. This book, written by a practice-oriented political scientist, together with the teachers and researchers from various universities in Europe and the rest of the world is a testimony to both policy and the evolution of policy analyses over the last 25 years.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 This landmark publication takes the 50th anniversary of the publication of the seminal paper by the Danish scientist, Einer Steemann Nielsen, as an occasion to assess the development, present state and future of the major aspects in freshwater and marine plankton productivity. Each chapter of this important work has been written by internationally-acknowledged experts in the subject, and the whole has been carefully drawn together and edited to provide a book that is an essential tool and reference for all aquatic scientists. The book takes ascending temporal and spatial size scale as its framework - covering molecular to geological scales. Chapters include reviews of physiology and biochemistry, measurement of phytoplankton productivity, the supply and uptake of nutrients, variability in processes and production, the evolution of the carbon cycle, and ecosystems. The subject is set in context with a chapter covering the work of Steemann Nielsen, whose work inspired the last 50 years of aquatic productivity studies. Historical aspects are discussed together with thought-provoking assessments of modern technological approaches and where future research emphasis should be focussed. Phytoplankton Productivityprovides, in one book, cutting edge reviews and key facts on the subject, making it a vital information source for marine and freshwater biologists, oceanographers, ecologists, environmental scientists and plant scientists. Copies should also be available in libraries of any research establishment and university as a reference for students, wherever these subjects are studied and taught. 简介: Preface This is the second edition of the text “Bioreaction Engineering Principles” by Jens Nielsen and John Villadsen, originally Published in 1994 by Plenum Press (now part of Kluwer). Time runs fast in Biotechnology, and when Kluwer Plenum stopped reprintiong the first edition and asked us to make a second, revised edition we happily accepted. A text on bioreactions written in the early 1990’s will not reflect the enormous development of experimental as well as theoretical aspects of cellular reaction during the past decade. In the preface to the first edition we admitted to be newcomers in the field. One of us (JV) has had 10 more years of job training in biotechnology, and the younger author (JN) has now received international recognition for his work with the hottest topics of “modern” biotechnology. Furthermore we are happy to have induced Gunnar Lidén, professor of chemical reaction engineering at our sister university in Lund, Sweden to join us as co-author of the second edition. His contribution, especially on the chemical engineering aspects of “real” bioreactors has been of the greatest value. Chapter 8 of the present edition is largely unchanged from the first edition. We wish to thank professor Martin Hjortso from LSU for his substantial help with this chapter. As was the case for the first edition numerous people helped us by carefully reviewing individual chapters. Professor Lars K Nielsen of University of Queensland was a constant sparring partner, both in Australia and lately as a visiting professor at DTU. The help of Dr. Mats Akesson and of our PhD students, in particular Mikkel Nordkvist, Thomas Grotkjaer, Jochen Fǒrster and Morten Skov Hansen is also gratefully acknowledged. MSc student Rebecca Munk Vejborg was of great help in her careful editing of the final version of the manuscript. All three authors are chemical engineers by education, and we followed in the footsteps of other chemical engineers who “converted” to biotechnology, but retained their passion for a quantitative treatment of problems from the physical world. One of the greatest innovators of biochemical engineering, professor James E. Bailey was also a chemical engineer by education. We wish to dedicate this book to the memory of this eminent scientist, who was a close colleague and a friend (of the senior author for more than 35 years), and whose work is admired by all three of us. If the pages of this book could inspire some students in the way Jay Bailey inspired hundreds of chemical engineering and biochemical engineering students we could hope for no better reward.

简介:内容简介 在线阅读本书 Winner of the Pulitzer Prize. In this "artful, informative, and delightful" (William H. McNeill, New York Review of Books) book, Jared Diamond convincingly argues that geographical and environmental factors shaped the modern world. Societies that had had a head start in food production advanced beyond the hunter-gatherer stage, and then developed religion --as well as nasty germs and potent weapons of war --and adventured on sea and land to conquer and decimate preliterate cultures. A major advance in our understanding of human societies, Guns, Germs, and Steel chronicles the way that the modern world came to be and stunningly dismantles racially based theories of human history. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the Phi Beta Kappa Award in Science, the Rhone-Poulenc Prize, and the Commonwealth club of California's Gold Medal. 媒体推荐 书评 Amazon.com Explaining what William McNeill called The Rise of the Westhas become the central problem in the study of global history. In Guns, Germs, and SteelJared Diamond presents the biologist''s answer: geography, demography, and ecological happenstance. Diamond evenhandedly reviews human history on every continent since the Ice Age at a rate that emphasizes only the broadest movements of peoples and ideas. Yet his survey is binocular: one eye has the rather distant vision of the evolutionary biologist, while the other eye--and his heart--belongs to the people of New Guinea, where he has done field work for more than 30 years. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Library Journal Most of this work deals with non-Europeans, but Diamond''s thesis sheds light on why Western civilization became hegemonic: "History followed different courses for different peoples because of differences among peoples'' environments, not because of biological differences among peoples themselves." Those who domesticated plants and animals early got a head start on developing writing, government, technology, weapons of war, and immunity to deadly germs. (LJ 2/15/97) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc. Alfred W. Crosby, Los Angeles Times3/9/97 Jared Diamond...is broadly erudite, writes in a style that pleasantly expresses scientific concepts in vernacular American English and deals almost exclusively in questions that should interest everyone concerned about how humanity developed. . . .Reading Diamond is like watching someone riding a unicycle, balancing an eel on his nose and juggling five squealing piglets. You may or may not agree with him (I usually do), but he rivets your attention. Guns, Germs, and Steelis his answer to a question proffered by his New Guinean friend, Yali: "Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo [steel axes, umbrellas, matches, soft drinks, etc.- the material stuff of civilization], but we black people had little cargo of our own?" It is an obvious and important question, and one to which professional historians, including myself, tend to react as if we''d discovered a coral snake in the shower...we shy away from Yali''s question because the easiest answer is one that many bray and bray about and others would rather die than utter. Race... Jared Diamond had done us all a great favor by supplying a rock-solid alternative to the racist answer... ...This is a wonderfully interesting book, especially for historians of the usual liberal arts background, who will find the final chapter, "The Future of Hisotry as a Science," alone worth the price of admission. In it, Diamond argues that students of humanity- while they cannot be as precise as physicists and chemists with their laboratory experiments, nor can they run history over again to see if this change can produce that result- have examples and "natural experiments" with which they can fashion informative comparisons. Why did Christendom enthusiastically and permanently adopt the wheel, the key element in most machinery, while the Islamic societies largely discarded it? What happened when syphilis first appeared, as compared to what is happening today with the appearance of AIDS? What is happening to society in the highlands of Diamond''s home-away-from-home, Paupa New Guinea, where people have hurtled from the technology of the stone ax to that of the computer within a lifetime? Diamond''s lesson is this: Think big like our astronomers, who begin their training not by trying to understand the nervous gyrations of the members of the asteroid belt but the simple and stately movements of the major planets over the years, decades and centuries. Think big. "Guns, Germs, and Steel" is a provocative start. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From AudioFile Grover Gardener does as well with scientific material as he does with more traditional literature, giving it spirit and vitality while sounding as interested in the information as readers will be. Although he doesn''t pronounce "bonobo" (pigmy chimp) like the keepers in the zoo, nor "Tenochtitlán" like a Mexican, his technical pronunciation is otherwise flawless. The abridgment to one-third of the original does no serious damage, but only deprives readers the privilege of enjoying more of this Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the evolution of civilization. Few writers could ever take so complex a subject and render it as palatable and memorable as Professor Diamond. J.A.H. © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine--This text refers to the Audio CD edition. From Kirkus Reviews MacArthur fellow and UCLA evolutionary biologist Diamond (The Third Chimpanzee, 1992, etc.) takes as his theme no less than the rise of human civilizations. On the whole this is an impressive achievement, with nods to the historians, anthropologists, and others who have laid the groundwork. Diamond tells us that the impetus for the book came from a native New Guinea friend, Yali, who asked him, ``Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own?'''' The long and short of it, says Diamond, is biogeography. It just so happened that 13,000 years ago, with the ending of the last Ice Age, there was an area of the world better endowed with the flora and fauna that would lead to the take-off toward civilization: that valley of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers we now call the Fertile Crescent. There were found the wild stocks that became domesticated crops of wheat and barley. Flax was available for the development of cloth. There was an abundance of large mammals that could be domesticated: sheep, goats, cattle. Once agriculture is born and animals domesticated, a kind of positive feedback drives the growth toward civilization. People settle down; food surpluses can be stored so population grows. And with it comes a division of labor, the rise of an elite class, the codification of rules, and language. It happened, too, in China, and later in Mesoamerica. But the New World was not nearly as abundant in the good stuff. And like Africa, it is oriented North and South, resulting in different climates, which make the diffusion of agriculture and animals problematic. While you have heard many of these arguments before, Diamond has brought them together convincingly. The prose is not brilliant and there are apologies and redundancies that we could do without. But a fair answer to Yali''s question this surely is, and gratifyingly, it makes clear that race has nothing to do with who does or does not develop cargo. Does anything eat wasps? and 101 other questions

Mick Manning (born in Yorkshire, England, 1959) and Brita Granstr?m (born in Eskilstuna, Sweden, 1969) work together as a team sharing the illustration and text. They have been producing award-winning non-fiction picture books for almost twenty years. They show that the best non-fiction for children can be scholarly, albeit with a light touch, and can have some of the imagination-stretching qualities of fiction. They are well known for their exciting performances involving readings and live drawing using overhead camera projection (often involving participation from members of the audience) all mixed with an audio-visual presentation. They appear on a regular basis at major UK book festival venues such as Bath, Cheltenham and Edinburgh International Book Festival. They have appeared at The Royal Society Science Festival and have celebrated The Big Draw at various venues including The Imperial War Museum. They have worked closely to support libraries and schools, performing voluntarily to school classes in the UK and Sweden. Most recently they visited the American Library Association Conference, Texas where they also visited a Hispanic school and libraries in the area. Many of Manning & Granstr?m's books are translated into a number of languages, including Chinese, German, Greek, Danish, Japanese, Norwegian, Swedish and Slovakian. For the last 12 years Mick & Brita have created, written and illustrated a monthly 5-page gentle pre-school series called 'Max and Kate' for the critically acclaimed US children's magazine Ladybug. http://www.mickandbrita.com Selection of Franklin Watts books: The World Is Full of Babies! The invisible man / Bantam Classic ed.
作者: by H.G. Wells ; with an introduction by Anthony West.
简介: Book Description The Invisible Man is a famous 1897 science fiction novel(la) by H.G. Wells. Wells's novel was originally serialized in Pearson's Magazine in 1897, and published as a novel the same year. The Invisible Man of the title is "Griffin", a scientist who theorizes that if a person's refractive index is changed to exactly that of air and his body does not absorb or reflect light, then he will not be visible. He successfully carries out this procedure on himself, but cannot become visible again, becoming mentally unstable as a result. From Library Journal Two of Wells's masterpieces get the red-carpet treatment here in these luxurious editions. Along with annotated texts, they feature scholarly introductions and appendixes, bibliographies, illustrations, and indexes. Though they are perhaps a tad pricey for most public libraries, academic collections supporting English departments should definitely invest in these volumes. From AudioFile Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie gathered together Star Trek alumni to found Alien Voices, an audio theater devoted to dramatizations of classic science fiction. This free adaptation of H.G. Wells's The Invisible Man typifies the kind of fun they have with their infectiously high-energy productions. The writing may be silly, the acting all over the map, the production values less than elegant, but the ensemble invests in make-believe the way kids do. The listener can't help joining in the game. It's irresistible. Y.R. Publisher Comments: Spine-tingling and entertaining, The Invisible Man is a science fiction classic–and a penetrating, unflinching look into the heart of human nature. To its author, H. G. Wells, the novel was as compelling as “a good gripping dream.” But to generations of readers, the terrible and evil experiment of the demented scientist, Griffin, has conveyed a chilling nightmare of believable horror. An atmosphere of ever-increasing suspense begins with the arrival of a mysterious stranger at an English village inn and builds relentlessly to the stark terror of a victim pursued by a maniacal invisible man. The result is a masterwork: a dazzling display of the brilliant imagination, psychological insight, and literary craftsmanship that made H.G. Wells one of the most influential writers of his time.
