简介:Handbook of Children with Special Health Care Needs David Hollar, editor Children with chronic conditions, developmental disorders, and birth defects represent a sizeable minority of American children鈥攁s many as one in five. Often their families have financial or other issues limiting their access to appropriate care, thus limiting their adult prospects as well. Compounding the problem, many valuable resources concerning this population are difficult to access although they may be critical to the practitioners who work to deliver quality care and services. In response, the Handbook of Children with Special Health Care Needs assembles research, applied, and policy perspectives reflecting the range of children鈥檚 problems requiring special services. Widely studied conditions (e.g., communication disorders, substance abuse) and those receiving lesser attention (e.g., tuberculosis) are covered, as are emerging ideas such as the 鈥渕edical home鈥?concept of continuity of care. Contributors offer screening and evaluation methods, research guidelines, and diagnostic and treatment interventions to inform the greatest spectrum of readers, including: Quality of life in children diagnosed with ADHD or specific learning disabilities Evaluating school-aged children with visual impairments Deaf culture advocates on deaf learners鈥?education Oral health access issues in children requiring special services Diagnostic and treatment issues in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders Addressing and preventing bullying of children with special health care needs Its interdisciplinary outlook makes the Handbook of Children with Special Health Care Needs a vital, forward-looking text for pediatricians, early childhood and special education professionals, disability advocates, social workers, and providers for children with special health care needs.
简介:Through their thoughtful and accurate balance of developmental, clinical-diagnostic, and experimental approaches to child and adolescent psychopathology, Eric Mash and David Wolfe's "Abnormal Child Psychology" remains the most authoritative, scholarly book in today's abnormal child psychology market. Appropriate for novice and expert alike, this book traces the developmental course of each disorder and shows how biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors interact with a child's environment. Since one of the best ways to introduce students to a particular problem of childhood or adolescence is to first describe a real child, the authors begin each chapter with engaging first-person accounts and case histories of a child with a particular disorder. This child is then referred to throughout the entire chapter, illustrating the categorical and dimensional approaches used to describe disorders, as well as bringing life to the theories Mash and Wolfe present. Embracing today's world with leading-edge coverage of the DSM-IV-TR and dimensional approaches to classification, Mash and Wolfe's comprehensive introduction covers many topics: evidence-based assessment and treatment, contemporary research and cutting-edge theories related to the predominantly inattentive ADHD subtype, early-onset and the developmental propensity model of conduct disorder, the triple vulnerability model of anxiety, the tripartite model in children, depression, and autism.
简介: Book Description Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he cant seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worsePercy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. Percys mom decides its time that he knew the truth about where he came from. She sends Percy to Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friendsone a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of AthenaPercy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves. From School Library Journal Grade 5-9–An adventure-quest with a hip edge. At first glance, Perseus Jackson seems like a loser (readers meet him at a boarding school for troubled youth), but he's really the son of Poseidon and a mortal woman. As he discovers his heritage, he also loses that mother and falls into mortal danger. The gods (still very active in the 21st-century world) are about to go to war over a lost thunderbolt, so Percy and sidekicks Grover (a young satyr) and Annabeth (daughter of Athena) set out to retrieve it. Many close calls and monster-attacks later, they enter Hades's realm (via L.A.). A virtuoso description of the Underworld is matched by a later account of Olympus (hovering 600 floors above Manhattan). There's lots of zippy review of Greek myth and legend, and characters like Medusa, Procrustes, Charon, and the Eumenides get updates. Some of the Labors of Heracles or Odysseus's adventures are recycled, but nothing seems stale, and the breakneck pace keeps the action from being too predictable. Percy is an ADHD, wise-cracking, first-person narrator. Naturally, his real quest is for his own identity. Along the way, such topics as family, trust, war, the environment, dreams, and perceptions are raised. There is subtle social critique for sophisticated readers who can see it. Although the novel ends with a satisfying conclusion (and at least one surprise), it is clear that the story isn't over. The 12-year-old has matured and is ready for another quest, and the villain is at large. Readers will be eager to follow the young protagonist's next move. –Patricia D. Lothrop, St. George's School, Newport, RI From Booklist Gr. 6-9. The escapades of the Greek gods and heroes get a fresh spin in the first book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, about a contemporary 12-year-old New Yorker who learns he's a demigod. Perseus, aka Percy Jackson, thinks he has big problems. His father left before he was born, he's been kicked out of six schools in six years, he's dyslexic, and he has ADHD. What a surprise when he finds out that that's only the tip of the iceberg: he vaporizes his pre-algebra teacher, learns his best friend is a satyr, and is almost killed by a minotaur before his mother manages to get him to the safety of Camp Half-Blood--where he discovers that Poseidon is his father. But that's a problem, too. Poseidon has been accused of stealing Zeus' lightning bolt, and unless Percy can return the bolt, humankind is doomed. Riordan's fast-paced adventure is fresh, dangerous, and funny. Percy is an appealing, but reluctant hero, the modernized gods are hilarious, and the parallels to Harry Potter are frequent and obvious. Because Riordan is faithful to the original myths, librarians should be prepared for a rush of readers wanting the classic stories. Chris Sherman Book Dimension length: (cm)21.3 width:(cm)14.5
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 This accessible, informative book will help teachers, parents, and practitioners make sense of current issues and controversies surrounding childhood disabilities. Publisher Summary 2 Approximately 12 percent of children in American schools have been identified as disabled in ways that interfere with their capacity to learn. Far from static, the field of childhood disabilities is changing and evolving as the understanding of disabling conditions is contested within and across disciplines. Parents of children with disabilities often find themselves in new, lonely, and bewildering territory, presented with conflicting advice and treatment options. This book is designed to help. Childhood Psychological Disorders: Current Controversies was compiled to disentangle contemporary controversial issues, contributing to a fuller understanding of the needs of children with disabilities and the families raising them. The book focuses on social, behavioral, and psychological dimensions of childhood disability. Specific, topical essays highlight the current state of knowledge and the nature of opposing arguments among specialists in various disciplines. The book opens with a consideration of the historical and social context of child disability, addressing the evolution of disability concepts and the changing nature of disability as a social/cultural phenomenon. Disability's impact on the family system and schools is explored, too, from the vantage point of educators, children, and their parents and siblings. Subsequent chapters examine such diagnoses as early onset bipolar disorder, autism, ADHD, the educational label Emotionally Handicapped/Disturbed (EH/D), food allergies and related disorders, and Gender Identity Disorder (GID). Alberto M. Bursztypi, PhD, is professor of school psychology and special education at Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY, and professor of urban education at The Graduate Center, City University of New York. Dr. Bursztyn edited the The Praeger Handbook of Special Education and is a coauthor of Rethinking Multicultural Education: Case Studies in Cultural Transition. Publisher Summary 3 To help parents of children with psychological disorders, teachers and others deal with conflicting advice and treatment options, Bursztyn (school psychology and special education, Brooklyn College/City U. of New York) compiles 11 chapters on current multidisciplinary perspectives on these issues. Following an introduction to different definitions and conceptual models of such disabilities, American contributors address their sociocultural construction and the clinical and educational aspects of diagnoses including autism, pediatric bipolar disorder, emotionally handicapped/disturbed, food allergies, and gender identity disorder. They discuss implications for the family and community. Annotation 漏2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

简介:"This volume is a ground-braking first step in standardizing the psychosocial treatment of adults with ADHD." - Dr Sam Goldstein, University of Utah "I think it is a uniquely valuable guide to how psychological thinking and treatment can be helpful to adults with ADHD - I recommend it to all professionals taking on this work." - Professor Eric Taylor, Head of Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, King's College London Institute of Psychiatry "What emerges fro this perspective is clinical wisdom. I could see and feel both the patient and the therapy." - Margaret Weiss, Director of research, ADHD Clinic, Children's and Women's Health Centre, Canada There is increasing recognition of the prevalence of ADHD in adulthood, which is estimated to be around one percent in the general population. These people have often experienced lifelong underachievement; they feel misunderstood and have not received the help they need. Reflecting the growing awareness of this problem, ADHD in Adults provides a comprehensive account of the presentation of adulthood ADHD, its assessment and treatment. Written by experienced practitioners in the field, the book introduces a cognitive behavioural model of ADHD from which the authors developed the Young-Bramham Programme. This is a unique, modular framework for assessing and treating people with adulthood ADHD and associated problems using practical intervention techniques. The book is accompanied by the Young-Bramham Programme Companion Website, www.wiley.com/go/adhdadults that provides downloadable materials for use by clients and therapists. ADHD in Adults is invaluable reading for clinicians working with adult ADHD clients in many different settings including primary care, adult mental health, learning disability, forensic, neuropsychiatry and neuropsychology. It will also be a useful self-help resource for ADHD clients, friends, family and supporters.
