The four plays of Shakespeare's Henriad and the slightly later Hamlet explore interconnections between political power and interior subjectivity as productions of the newly emerging constellation we call modernity. This book argues that for Shakespeare subjectivity was a critical, negative mode of resistance to power - not its abettor. From 1595-1600 Shakespeare dissected the workings of political power in the four histories of the Henriad and in Hamlet in ways which were remarkably parallel - and were perhaps influenced by - the ideas of the father of modern political analysis, Niccolo Machiavelli. However, the very same plays simultaneously explored the dynamics of self- and identity-formation under new conditions of secular modernity, in the process producing such memorable characters as Richard II, Prince Hal, Falstaff, and Hamlet. Hugh Grady argues that in analyzing modern subjectivity, Shakespeare re-produced not the ideas of Machiavelli, but those of Michel de Montaigne, that Renaissance definer of shifting identities and subjectivities and of complexly formed, sceptical knowledge. In so doing, Shakespeare in effect contributes to the theoretical debates over power and subjectivity in literary and cultural studies at the dawn of the twenty-first century.
The prince / Bantam Classic ed.
作者: by Niccolo Machiavelli ; with selections from the discourses ; translated by Daniel Donno ; edite...
Here is the world's most famous master plan for seizing and holding power. Astonishing in its candor, The Prince even today remains a disturbingly realistic and prophetic work'on what it takes to be a prince... a king...a president. When, in 1512, Machiavelli was removed from his post in his beloved Florence; he resolved to set down a treatise on leadership that was practical, not ideaiistic. Theprince he envisioned would be unencumbered by ordinary ethical and moral values; his prince would be man and beast, fox and lion. Today this small sixteenth-century masterpiece has become essential reading for every student of government and is the ultimate book on power politics.

The Prince:An Intensely Practical Guide to the Exercise of Political Power for the Western Nations

The men of Renaissance Florence were so renowned for sodomy that "Florenzer" in German meant "sodomite." Indeed,in the late fifteenth century, as many as one in two Florentine men had come to the attention of the authorities for sodomy by the time they were thirty. In the seventy years from 1432 to 1502, some 17,000 men - in a city of only 40,000 - were investigated for sodomy; 3,000 were convicted and thousands more confessed to gain amnesty. Michael Rocke vividly depicts this vibrant sexual culture in a world where thesesame-sex acts were not the deviant transgressions of a small minority, but an integral part of a normal masculineidentity. Rocke uncovers a culture in which sexual roles were strictly defined by age, with boys under eighteen the"passive" participants in sodomy, youths in their twentiesand older men the "active" participants, and most men at the age of thirty marrying women, their days of sexual frivolity with boys largely over. Such same sex activities were viewed asa normal phase in the transition to adulthood, and only a few pursued them much further. Rather than precluding heterosexual experiences, they were considered an extension of youthful and masculine lust and desire. As Niccolo Machiavelli quipped about a handsome man, "When young he lured husbands away from their wives, and now he lures wives away from their husbands." Florentines generally accepted sodomy as a common misdemeanor, to be punished with a fine, rather than as a deadly sin and a transgression against nature. There is no word, in the otherwise rich Florentine sexual lexicon, for "homosexual," nor is there a distinctive and well-developed homosexual "subculture." Rather, sexual acts between men and boys were an integral feature of the dominant culture. Rocke roots this sexual activity in the broader context of Renaissance Florence, with its social networks of families, juvenile gangs, neighbors, patronage, guilds, and confraternities, and its busy political life from the early years of the Republic through the period of Lorenzo de' Medici, Savonarola, and the beginning of Medici princely rule.
Niccolo Polo, father of Marco, will finally reveal the story he has kept secret all his life - the story of Altair, one of the brotherhood's most extraordinary Assassins. Altair embarks on a formidable mission - one that takes him throughout the Holy Land and shows him the true meaning of the Assassin's Creed. To demonstrate his commitment, Altair must defeat nine deadly enemies, including Templar leader, Robert de Sable. Altair's life story is told here for the first time: a journey that will change the course of history; his ongoing battle with the Templar conspiracy; a family life that is as tragic as it is shocking; and, the ultimate betrayal of an old friend.
Modern republicanism - distinguished from its classical counterpart by its commercial character and jealous distrust of those in power, by its use of representative institutions, and by its employment of a separation of powers and a system of checks and balances - owes an immense debt to the republican experiment conducted in England between 1649, when Charles I was executed, and 1660, when Charles II was crowned. Though abortive, this experiment left a legacy in the political science articulated both by its champions, John Milton, Marchamont Nedham, and James Harrington, and by its sometime opponent and ultimate supporter, Thomas Hobbes. This volume examines these four thinkers, situates them with regard to the novel species of republicanism first championed in the early 1500s by Niccolo Machiavelli, and examines the debt that he and they owed the Epicurean tradition in philosophy and the political science crafted by the Arab philosophers Alfarabi, Avicenna, and Averroes."--BOOK JACKET.
简介:The most successful reader of its kind, "A World of Ideas" is ideal for composition instructors who want to introduce their students to some of the world's most important thinkers and their ideas: for example, Niccolo Machiavelli on government, Sigmund Freud on the mind, and Virginia Woolf on feminism. Because students perceive writers such as these as serious and important, they take the writing course more seriously: they learn to read more attentively, think more critically, and write more effectively. But more important, this may be a student's only opportunity to encounter these thinkers. No other composition reader offers a comparable collection of important readings along with the supportive apparatus students need to understand, analyze, and respond to them.
简介:Niccolo Machiavelli taught that political leaders must be prepared to do evil that good may come of it, and his name has been a byword ever since for duplicity and immorality. Is his sinister reputation deserved? In answering this question Quentin Skinner focuses on three major works, The Prince, the Discourses, and The History of Florence, and distills from them an introduction to Machiavelli of exemplary clarity.-publisher description.

With the publication of posthumous writings of Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser, it has become evident that he engaged with the writings of Niccolo Machiavelli in a more sustained fashion than had previously been supposed, notwithstanding the fragmentary and unfinished nature of some of these writings. Lahtinen (political science, U. of Tampere, Finland) argues that these writings, which interpret Machiavelli as the theoretician of political conjuncture, contain noteworthy contributions to Machiavelli scholarship and to political theory and philosophy in general. In his reading, Althusser's Machiavelli stressed the analysis of the particular characteristics of each political conjuncture at any given time, placed the perspective of the "people" or the "many" as the criteria for the evaluation of the actions of The Prince, outlined the aleatory (chance-like) nature of political dynamics, and politicized morality (rather than separated politics from morals), all of which together provide important contributions to a materialist theory of politics. Few figures in intellectual history have proved as notorious and ambiguous as Niccolo Machiavelli. But while his treatise "The Prince" made his name synonymous with autocratic ruthlessness and cynical manipulation, "The Discourses" (c.1517) shows a radically different outlook on the world of politics. In this carefully argued commentary on Livy's history of republican Rome, Machiavelli proposed a system of government that would uphold civic freedom and security by instilling the virtues of active citizenship, and that would also encourage citizens to put the needs of the state above selfish, personal interests. Ambitious in scope, but also clear-eyed and pragmatic, "The Discourses" creates a modern theory of republic politics. Leslie J. Walker's definitive translation has been revised by Brian Richardson and is accompanied by an introduction by Bernard Crick, which illuminates Machiavelli's historical context and his new theories of politics. This edition also includes suggestions for further reading and notes.

简介:The adulterous affairs of Niccolo Machiavelli and the comedies he wrote about them are actually the subject of only one of the six essays presented here by Ruggiero (history, U. of Miami) in a work that explores sex, self, and society across the Italian Renaissance. Deeply influenced by Michel Foucault's theories on the history of sex, Ruggiero nevertheless uses these essays to argue that neither Renaissance sex nor gender fits well with the modern definitions that underlie Foucault's theories. His essays provide critical readings of Pietro Aretino's comedy, Il marescalco; Giovanni Boccacio's novelle relating the story of Rustico and Alibech in the Decameron; the trial of an abbot for his relationship with a concubine; Machiavelli's aforementioned comedies; and other materials.
