简介

The adulterous affairs of Niccolo Machiavelli and the comedies he wrote about them are actually the subject of only one of the six essays presented here by Ruggiero (history, U. of Miami) in a work that explores sex, self, and society across the Italian Renaissance. Deeply influenced by Michel Foucault's theories on the history of sex, Ruggiero nevertheless uses these essays to argue that neither Renaissance sex nor gender fits well with the modern definitions that underlie Foucault's theories. His essays provide critical readings of Pietro Aretino's comedy, Il marescalco; Giovanni Boccacio's novelle relating the story of Rustico and Alibech in the Decameron; the trial of an abbot for his relationship with a concubine; Machiavelli's aforementioned comedies; and other materials.
