简介:What makes good people do bad things? Where is the line separating good from evil, and who is in danger of crossing it? Social psychologist Philip Zimbardo explains how--and the myriad reasons why--we are all susceptible to the lure of "the dark side." Drawing on examples from history as well as his own research, Zimbardo details how situational forces and group dynamics can work in concert to make monsters out of decent people. By illuminating the psychological causes behind such disturbing metamorphoses, Zimbardo enables us to better understand a variety of phenomena, from corporate malfeasance to organized genocide. He replaces the long-held notion of the "bad apple" with that of the "bad barrel"--the idea that the social setting and the system contaminate the individual, rather than the other way around. Yet we are capable of resisting evil, he argues, and can even teach ourselves to act heroically.--From publisher description.

Author Goatly (English, Lingnan U., Hong Kong) identifies some of the development in the field of Stylistics since its pioneer, Roman Jakobson, identified the patterning of the message as the poetic function. His analyses illustrate how Jakobson's primary emphasis on the message surrenders to emphasis on the code (language) or undermining the code, on context, on reader response, and on the relationship of the shared assumptions of the addresser (speaker, writer) and addressee (listener, reader). To illustrate, the author uses a diverse selection of authors, from Golding to Pinter, and from Ishiguro to Rowling. A pivotal chapter examines how the differing stylistic perspectives can be applied to the same text. The essays will interest both undergraduate and graduate students in Stylistics courses.

Summary: Publisher Summary 1 As writers of English from Australia to India to Sri Lanka command our attention, Salman Rushdie can state confidently that English fiction was moribund until the Empire wrote back, and few, even among the British, demur. A. S. Byatt does, and her case is persuasive. In a series of essays on the complicated relations between reading, writing, and remembering, the gifted novelist and critic sorts the modish from the merely interesting and the truly good to arrive at a new view of British writing in our time. Whether writing about the renaissance of the historical novel, discussing her own translation of historical fact into fiction, or exploring the recent European revival of interest in myth, folklore, and fairytale, Byatt's abiding concern here is with the interplay of fiction and history. Her essays amount to an eloquent and often moving meditation on the commitment to historical narrative and storytelling that she shares with many of her British and European contemporaries. With copious illustration and abundant insights into writers from Elizabeth Bowen and Henry Green to Anthony Burgess, William Golding, Muriel Spark, Penelope Fitzgerald, Julian Barnes, Martin Amis, Hilary Mantel, and Pat Barker, On Histories and Storiesis an oblique defense of the art Byatt practices and a map of the complex affiliations of British and European narrative since 1945.
简介:From the shootings at Columbine High School to the JonBenet Ramsey murder to the sentencing of "killer kids," today's media cannot decide if children are objects of fear or in need of protection. Our culture's deep-seated ambivalence toward its young is reflected in a fascinating array of recent fiction that exposes society's collective fantasies and fears. Demon or Doll investigates the ambiguous, contradictory ways childhood has been formulated in the twentieth century and the resulting ambivalence reflected in contemporary fiction. Grounding her exploration in a discussion of traditional constructions of childhood and the influence of the Romantics, Ellen Pifer shows how Dickens translated the Romantic idyll of original innocence into poignant images of "poor children," abused or abandoned by a harsh, increasingly mechanical society. At the turn of the twentieth century, Henry James created provocative images of childhood that anticipated the contemporary, post-Freudian child. Pifer engages a diverse and distinguished body of work by a global range of authors, addressing in each chapter a novel or cluster of novels in which the child's image serves as a nexus for investigating literary and cultural issues. The theories and observations of social historians, psychologists, and cultural critics--from Philippe Ari s to Raymond Williams, Freud to Foucault--clarify the significance of the child's created image. Novels by William Golding, Doris Lessing, Milan Kundera, Toni Morrison, Salman Rushdie, and Jerzy Kosinski bring readers face to face with shattered, often grotesque images of the child. But several of postwar fiction's most experimental writers, including Vladimir Nabokov, Don DeLillo, and Ian McEwan, create texts that render surprising faith in original innocence. Whether the contemporary image of childhood appears intact or fractured, wholesome or horrifying, its many facets create a mirror in which we seek glimpses of our elusive, original selves.
Two young drifters, Nate and Cat - bottomed out on drugs and living on the margins of San Francisco - are forced by stress and circumstance to give up their infant daughter. Seventeen years later, Nate comes to the idyllic setting of the Berkshires to teach at the elite private Pioneer School - as his daughter's teacher." "Willa Golding, ensconced in a magnificent country home with her parents, has never worried much about being adopted. But when the world she's always trusted becomes a foreign place, she learns that her adoptive parents have not been totally honest with her - nor with others in their privileged circle." "Claire Squire is a visual artist struggling on the outskirts of her profession. It is a lucky break to get her troubled son, Teddy, a backdoor acceptance to Pioneer. But Teddy soon finds it's a precarious place well disguised by preppy ties, plaid skirts, and activities designed to look good on college applications. He sees through it all - but that, too, threatens his slippery grasp on a better future." "Somebody Else's Daughter is a collision of two very different fathers - biological and adoptive; a woman whose independence and talent have led her to dead ends in life and love; and a villain whose intentions slowly unfold with the help, witting and unwitting, of all those around him. An electric, suspenseful tale of conflicted characters and the fractured landscape of the American psyche, it scratches the surface of the Berkshire dream - a place where people go to live their ideals, and to hide their secrets."--BOOK JACKET.

Grammar checking in a combined model: phrase structure and dependency grammars reconciled
简介: grammar checking is an interesting field within computational linguistics. different technologies and methods have been used in this area. to name a few of them, kukich (1992), atwell and elliott (1987),douglas and dale (1992), golding and schabes (1996; kukich, 1992),bustamante and le6n (1996), gojenola and oronoz (2000) have tackled this problem from various points of view with different methodologies. besides these, there are some valuable research projects that are directly aimed at conducting grammar checking on a practical scale. kuenning's ispell and atkinson's aspell, bernth's easyenglish, jensen, heidorn, and richardson's critique, bustamante and le6n's gramcheck and bredenkamp, crysmann, and petrea's flag are examples of these projects. even though researches on grammar checking can be carried out through deterministic or non-deterministic methods, checking the grammaticality using an appropriate parsing technology is a way that deserves our interest and exertion. in order to build up a robust grammar checking program, we need a robust parsing system, which is reliably accurate and fast. up till now numerous parsers have been developed within different frameworks with different strategies, among which, the link grammar parser, designed by sleator and temperley (1991; lafferty, sleator, & temperley, 1992) is a good candidate to our needs. rather than on a model that requires to examine the basic context of a word within a sentence, the link parser is based on a model that words within a text form "links" with one another. in this respect, the link grammar is theoretically linked with the grammar school of dependency grammar. the fundamental working mechanism of the link parser is that the linking requirement of all the words in the sentence should be satisfied. the importance ofthis mechanism lies in its potentiality of helping determine the grammaticality of sentences. this is a peculiar quality that most other parsing systems lack, whether they are in the statistical framework or in the rule-based framework.
简介:In 1953, William Golding was a provincial schoolteacher, rejected by every major publisher--until an editor pulled Lord of the Flies off the rejection pile. He went on to become one of the most popular and influential British authors since World War II--disheveled and darkly humorous, sometimes more disturbing than he is palatable, and above all fascinating. Yet despite the fame and acclaim, the renowned author saw himself as a monster--a reclusive depressive ruled by his fears, who battled alcoholism throughout his life. In addition to being a schoolteacher, Golding was a scientist, a sailor and a poet before becoming a bestselling author, and his embitterment and alienation, his family, the women in his past, along with his war experiences, inform his work. This is the first book to unpack the life and character of a man whose entire oeuvre dealt with the conflict between light and dark in the human soul.--From publisher description.
简介:The 50th Anniversary Edition of the Lord of the Flies is the volume that every fan of this classic book will have to own! Lord of the Flies remains as provocative today as when it was first published in 1954, igniting passionate debate with its startling, brutal portrait of human nature. Though critically acclaimed, it was largely ignored upon its initial publication. Yet soon it became a cult favorite among both students and literary critics who compared it to J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye in its influence on modern thought and literature. Stripped of all pretense, Lord of the Flies is an adventure tale, a thrillingly and elegantly told account of a group of English schoolboys marooned on a tropical island who - far away from the mores of society and adult supervision - reveal the dark, base side of humanity as they descend into savagery. It presents a bleak, yet telling look at the nature of the beast known as man. In the words of Golding himself, "the theme is an attempt to trace the defect of society back to the defect of human nature." Labeled a parable, an allegory, a myth, a morality tale, a parody, a political treatise, even a vision of the apocalypse, Lord of the Flies has established itself as a true classic. This special fiftieth anniversary edition features the 1962 introduction by E.M. Forster, biographical and critical notes by E.I. Epstein and original drawings by Ben Gibson, specially commissioned for this work. (Publisher)
