简介:In introducing two dozen papers offering 18 national reports on ways to settle tax disputes, Lang and Zuger (Austrian and international tax law, Vienna U. of Economics and Business Administration) note that until recently there were few alternatives to mutual agreement procedures under the European Convention to settle such matters. Therefore, some countries added arbitration clauses to newly negotiated tax treaties. Following a general report on the Convention and conflict resolution, contributors report from most of the EU countries plus several other nations. The volume appends guidelines on arbitration procedures. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
简介:The original plan for the anthology was to reconstruct Austrian Meinong's (1853-1920) contributions to science, and the school that arose from his thought completely and faithfully. Five years on, however, his theory of modality and the work of some of his students are not covered. Still, scholars of philosophy from Europe and the US outline his life, times, and work; profile 10 of his philosophical descendants; and explore how psychology, logic, ontology, metaphysics, and value theory play out in his philosophy. Only names are indexed. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 Natural monopolies are not subject to the market-based principle of competition. Consequently, it is necessary to control companies in such monopoly positions with regard to their pricing. In the future, it will become more and more important to consider a possible change in the regulation regime when the future-oriented costs of equity -both in terms of price regulation and for conducting capital market-oriented business valuations - are to be determined. Based on the principal-agent problem, the book explains this topic. The effect of a change in the regulation regime is presented in the form of two studies: an international secondary analysis of the effects on cost of equity based on event studies of the Anglo-Saxon area and a primary analysis based on the Austrian regulation policy for electricity and gas supply systems. The two studies arrive at similar results: The change from a rate-of-return regulation to incentive regulation systems leads to a significant increase in systematic risk. 简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 The editors have selected 71 articles that provide an overview of the trends and issues of this field. The articles in volume one are grouped into four sections: classical and Marxian conceptions of capital, foundations of neoclassical theory, some Austrian and neo-Austrian contributions, and early neoclassical capital controversies. Among the authors whose articles appear in volume two are W.E.G. Salter, Joan Robinson, R.F. Kahn, Piero Sraffa, F.H. Hahn, and Paul A. Samuelson. The 24 articles of volume three are arranged under the themes of reswitching and capital reversing; assessments of Cambridge capital theory controversies; and capital, increasing returns, and endogenous growth. Bliss (international economics, U. of Oxford, UK) has provided a 17-page introduction titled a "personal overview" of capital theory. This is complimented by a longer (42-page) introduction by Avi J. Cohen (economics, York U., Canada) and G.C. Harcourt (emeritus, history of economic theory, U. of Cambridge, UK and U. of Adelaide, Australia). The articles are reproduced in facsimile. Each volume includes a name index; there is no subject index. Annotation 漏2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
简介:"On a sunny afternoon in late June, Cambridge professor Joseph Reavley is summoned from a student cricket match to learn that his parents have died in an automobile crash. Joseph's brother, Matthew, as officer in the Intelligence Service, reveals that their father had been en route to London to turn over to him a mysterious secret document - allegedly with the power to disgrace England forever and destroy the civilized world. A paper so damning that Joseph and Matthew dared mention it only to their restless younger sister. Now it has vanished." "What has happened to this explosive document, if indeed it ever existed? How had it fallen into the hands of their father, a quiet countryman? Not even Matthew, with his Intelligence connections, can answer these questions. And Joseph is soon burdened with a second tragedy: the shocking murder of his most gifted student, handsome Sebastian Allard, loved and admired by everyone. Or so it appeared.". "Meanwhile, England's seamless peace is cracking - as the distance between the murder of an Austrian archduke by a Serbian anarchist and the death of a brilliant university student by a bullet to the head becomes shorter with each day."--BOOK JACKET.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 Focusing on the elementary and paradigmatic, 14 papers presented by Weiss (Austrian Academy of Sciences) and Wodak (applied linguisitcs, U. of Vienna, Austria) critically examine the foundational elements of discourse-analytical research of the past 20 years. The epistemological basis for discourse analysis theory is explored in a number of papers. A second central concern is the proper role of interdisciplinary research. The papers collectively offer advice for the beginnings of a theory that integrates structural and linguistic facts, theoretical approaches, and disciplinary perspectives. Annotation (c) Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) Publisher Summary 2 Can discourse analysis techniques adequately deal with complex social phenomena? What does "interdisciplinarity" mean for theory building and the practice of empirical research? This volume provides an innovative and original debate on critical theory and discourse analysis, focussing on the extent to which critical discourse analysis can and should draw on the theory and methodology of a range of disciplines within the social sciences. 简介:This book offers a detailed study of the truth-bearers problem, that is, the question of which category of items the predicates 鈥榯rue鈥?and 鈥榝alse鈥?are predicated. The book has two dimensions: historical and systematic. Both focus around Tarski鈥檚 semantic theory of truth. The author locates Tarski鈥檚 ideas in a broad context of Austrian philosophy, in particular, Brentano鈥檚 tradition. However, Bolzano and phenomenology (Husserl and Reinach) are also taken into account. The historical perspective is completed by showing how Tarski was rooted in Polish philosophical tradition originated with Twardowski and his version of Brentanism. The historical considerations are the basis for showing how the idea of truth-bearers as acts of judging was transformed into the theory of truth-bearers as sentences. In particular, the author analyses the way to nominalism in Polish philosophy, culminating in Lesniewski, Kotarbinski and Tarski. This book is indispensable for everybody interested in the evolution of Austrian philosophy from descriptive psychology to semantics. It is also a fundamental contribution toward a deeper understanding of the philosophical background of Tarski鈥檚 theory of truth.
简介:The book is concerned with the statistical theory for locating spatial sensors. It bridges the gap between spatial statistics and optimum design theory. After introductions to those two fields the topics of exploratory designs and designs for spatial trend and variogram estimation are treated. Special attention is devoted to describing new methodologies to cope with the problem of correlated observations. A great number of relevant references are collected and put into a common perspective. The theoretical investigations are accompanied by a practical example, the redesign of an Upper-Austrian
简介:'One of the most learned and creative of contemporary Austrian economists offers a more comprehensive and persuasive account of that school than any other known to me. Professor Huerta de Soto even finds antecedents among the scholastics of 16th-century Spain. He emphasizes the decisive role of entrepreneurs in discovering opportunities, creating knowledge, putting widely scattered knowledge to use, and promoting economic coordination. He compares Austrian economics (favorably) with contemporary mainstream work. All economists should be acquainted with these Austrian contributions, including economists who may not be entirely convinced on some points of money-macro theory.' - Leland Yeager, Auburn University and University of Virginia, US The Austrian Schoolforms a concise but comprehensive exposition of the main tenets of the modern Austrian School of Economics while also providing a detailed explanation of the differences between the Austrian and the neoclassical (including the Chicago School) approaches to economics. The book also includes: * reviews of the contributions of the main Austrian economists * critical analysis of the major objections to Austrian economics and an evaluation of its likely future development * complete exposition on the concepts and implications of entrepreneurship and dynamic competition * a new concept of dynamic efficiency (as an alternative to the standard Paretian criterion) and, a generalized definition of socialism (as a systematic aggression against entrepreneurship) * evaluation of the role of Spanish Scholastics of the 16th century as forerunners of the Austrian School, as well as the influence and contributions of the main Austrian Scholars of the 19th and 20th centuries. This book will most notably appeal to Austrian economists but also to other free market economists as well as researchers and academics of economic methodology, the history of economic thought, institutional economics and comparative economic systems. 简介:Theodor Storm: Immensee / Adelbert von Chamisso: Peter Schlemihl / Adalbert Stifter: Brigitta ---Theodor Storm (1817 - 88), poet and short-story writer, was born in Schleswig... As early as 1843 he had made himself known as a lyrical poet of the Romantic School, ...but he wrote nothing that excels, in depth and tenderness of feeling, the charmin... more 籫 story of Immensee; and taking his work all in all, Storm still ranks today as a master of the short story in Ger-man literature, rich though it is in this form of prose-fiction. (C. W. Bell) --- Peter Schlemihl, one of the pleasantest fancies of the days when Germany delighted in romance, was first published in 1814. The story is a poet's whim. Later writings of Chamisso (1781-1838) proved him to be one of the best lyric poets of the romance school of his time, entirely German in his tone of thought. (Henry Morley) --- Brigitta is usually regarded as an early example of German realism and written by probably the most accomplished Austrian prose writer of the nineteenth century, Adalbert Stifter (1805 - 68)..., an illustration of Stifter's didactic con-cern with inner beauty in contrast to outward appearances... Stifter instructs us in more than inner beauty by demonstrating for us - perhaps unwittingly - that the preferred and positive values of the civilized world are always already informed by their antinomies. 简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 This accessible and fresh account of German writing since 1750 is a case study of literature as a cultural and spiritual resource in modern societies. Beginning with the emergence of German language literature on the international stage in the mid-eighteenth century, the book plays down conventional labels and periodisation of German literary history in favour of the explanatory force of international cultural impact. It explains, for instance, how specifically German and Austrian conditions shaped major contributions to European literary culture such as Romanticism and the 'language scepticism' of the early twentieth century. From the First World War until reunification in 1990, Germany's defining experiences have been ones of catastrophe. The book provides a compelling overview of the different ways in which German literature responded to historical disaster. They are, first, Modernism (the 'Literature of Negation'), second, the literature of totalitarian regimes (Third Reich and German Democratic Republic), and third the various creative strategies and evasions of the capitalist democratic multi-medial cultures of the Weimar and Federal Republics. The volume achieves a balance between textual analysis and cultural theory that gives it value as an introductory reference source and as an original study and as such will be essential reading for students and scholars alike.
简介:First published in 1987, Professor O'Sullivan's work provides an in depth philosophical examination of the foundations of method in Economics and other human sciences. The argument is unabashedly dialectical in the great Socratic-Platonic tradition, and the reissue will be very welcome to all students of methodology, in particular those students... more 籵f economic methodology seeking燼 refreshing alternative to yet more mathematical game playing. In an age dominated and perhaps to an extent perplexed by an ultimately non-committal postmodernism the book provides a root and branch critique of the epistemological relativism which must lie at the root of the whole post-modernist approach; and in reasserting the fundamental importance not only for the methods of science but also for European civilisation of the pursuit of truth it takes a stance which is very much against the tide of the times. A heterodox perspective is also provided and defended in detail regarding the real nature of economic methodology whereby it is shown that Economics epitomises a teleological mode of explanation which is significantly different from the efficient causal modes of explanation of the natural sciences. In fact Economics is the ultimate subjectivist/interpretative discipline in the methodological sense of Max Weber and Alfred Schutz, a fact which has only been recognised (and welcomed) in the Austrian school of Economics. ?less
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 Mechanics and model-based control are both rapidly expanding scientific fields and fundamental disciplines of mechatronics, sharing demanding mathematical and system-theoretic formulations and methods. The papers in this volume deal with smart materials, which allow the design and implementation of new types of actuator/sensor fields and networks. Main topics treated are fundamental studies on laminated, composite and functionally graded materials, thermal and piezoelectric actuation, active and passive damping, as well as vibrations and waves in smart structures. The book is based on the 1st Japanese-Austrian Workshop which took place in Linz in Fall 2008. Publisher Summary 2 Mechanics and model-based control continue to expand as fundamental mechatronics disciplines. 简介:"Hindering the artist is a crime," wrote Egon Schiele in 1912. At the time he was in prison for disseminating immoral drawings. Throughout his work the note of defiance, provocation, and rebellion was sounded. Schiele's favorite subjects were female nudes and self-portraits, and he worked at his art with furious commitment, though it was not until shortly before his early death that he began to win real recognition. Today, with Oskar Kokoschka, he is seen as the most important of the Austrian ar更多>>
简介:The role of the global architect in society is changing. Instead of waiting for commissions to come their way, architects are initiating and developing practical solutions in response to dramatically changing living conditions in many parts of the world today. Small Scale, Big Changefocuses on a central chapter of this shift, presenting recently built or under-construction works in underserved communities around the globe by these 11 architects and firms: Elemental (Chilean); Anna Heringer (Austrian); Diebedo Francis Kere (Burkinabe); Hashim Sarkis A.L.U.D. (Lebanese); Jorge Mario Jauregui (Brazilian); Frederic Druot, Anne Lacaton & Jean Philippe Vassal (French); Michael Maltzan Architecture (American); Noero Wolff Architects (South African); Rural Studio (American); Estudio Teddy Cruz (American, born Guatemala); and Urban Think Tank (American/Austrian/Venezuelan). Without sacrificing concern for aesthetics, these architects have developed projects that reveal a post-utopian specificity of place; their architectural solutions emerge from close collaboration with future users and sustained research into local conditions. The projects--which include schools, parks, housing and infrastructural interventions--reveal an exciting change in the longstanding dialogue between architecture and society, as the architect's roles, methods, approaches and responsibilities are dramatically reevaluated. They also offer an expanded definition of sustainability that moves beyond experimentation with new materials and technologies to encompass larger concepts of social and economic sustainability. Small Scale, Big Changeexamines the evolving standards of responsibility and participation in architecture and the ways in which architects can engage critically with larger social, economic and political issues currently facing communities around the world.
简介:A complex network of regulatory systems has arisen around the provision of media in Europe. In this connection regulating content is a focal point, as content is not only of economic but of vital cultural importance. At Community level a wide variety of measures have been taken to promote this branch of industry, especially in fields in which new and innovative digital technologies are used to enhance the market potential of content and creative products and services. This important book focuses on regulatory interventions in the content industry under Community law. It offers an in-depth perspective on the functioning of the European legal framework for the content industry, its guiding principles, and its explicit and sometimes more fluid interface with policy areas falling largely into Member States competences. In this aspect the book can also be read as an analysis of the impact of the cooperation between European and Member State regulation when economic as well as social, democratic, and cultural policy goals are at stake. Among the areas of content regulation covered are: legal definitions related to the content industry; branches of the content industry broken down according to content category and distribution system; the division of competences between the EC and the Member States in cultural affairs;Community projects relevant to the content industry; competition rules relating to distribution; market entry and access regulation in the electronic communication markets; specific regulation for such considerations as the protection of minors, protection of health, protection of consumers, and protection of personal rights; ensuring and safeguarding functioning market structures in the content markets; and harmonization and coordination measures. The basis of this book was a research project commissioned by the Austrian Federal Chancellery in preparation for a seminar supported by the European Commission in connection with Austria?s Council Presidency in the first half of 2006. As a systematic overview and analysis of the legal bases of European content regulation, this book will be of extraordinary value to practitioners, policymakers, officials, and academics in the fields of media and communications law. Beyond that, the work sheds a clear and defining light on an area that has an important role to play in the future economic growth and the development of a competitive business environment in Europe.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 As this collection proves, the Silk Road was not only an overland route between the Near East and China. For almost two thousand years traders brought goods by ship from the Persian Gulf to the East China Sea through the Indian Ocean and back. The papers presented here originated at a 2004 workshop on the maritime Silk Road that was held at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The essays begin with the western side, discussing early stops on the route and the groups that migrated to become the great interconnected trading clans. The middle section concentrates on aspects of the trade between Iran and China, the "two poles" of the journey. The final essays look at the road from the Chinese side, especially evidence in Chinese records of foreign traders who settled there. The articles vary in time from the era of Alexander the Great to the nineteenth century. The perspective of the authors is a refreshing change from Euro-centered histories of the subject.
