简介

Summary: Publisher Summary 1 As this collection proves, the Silk Road was not only an overland route between the Near East and China. For almost two thousand years traders brought goods by ship from the Persian Gulf to the East China Sea through the Indian Ocean and back. The papers presented here originated at a 2004 workshop on the maritime Silk Road that was held at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The essays begin with the western side, discussing early stops on the route and the groups that migrated to become the great interconnected trading clans. The middle section concentrates on aspects of the trade between Iran and China, the "two poles" of the journey. The final essays look at the road from the Chinese side, especially evidence in Chinese records of foreign traders who settled there. The articles vary in time from the era of Alexander the Great to the nineteenth century. The perspective of the authors is a refreshing change from Euro-centered histories of the subject.
