简介:Methods of recursive identification deal with the problem of building mathematical models of signals and systems on-line, at the same time as data is being collected. Such methods, which are also known as adaptive algorithms or sequential parameter estimation methods, may be applied to a wide spectrum of online adaptive systems, such as devices for signal processing, prediction, or control and are useful for modeling systems in general. For example, they can be used to analyze the demand for power on an electric generating grid and help the grid adjust to continually changing power needs, or applied to the changing conditions of a papermaking plant, or to monitoring pollution in a river. This book provides a comprehensive and systematic framework for developing, describing, and analyzing such recursive algorithms. It has been carefully designed and organized to meet the needs of readers with different objectives. With a myriad of algorithms now in use, it provides a simple and coherent frame of reference for understanding the subject and will serve as a guide to the large number of choices made available by the advent of inexpensive, powerful digital processors. Readers primarily interested in theory will find a detailed development of convergence analysis and asymptotic distribution results. For graduate students it is a basic introduction to the subject. And for engineers interested in practical applications, the book's earlier theory-oriented chapters are equipped with "user's summaries" that provide direct access to the discussion of practical aspects developed in the final three chapters on implementation and applications. This book is fifth in The MIT Press Signal Processing, Optimization, and Control Series, edited by Alan S. Willsky.
简介:Looking behind the facade of tightly structured tables of organization and chains of command, this group of studies addresses the key question of how the police go about policing themselves in the real world. The contributors' point of departure is the documented evidence that the men and women on the streets enjoy considerable autonomy and discretion that make strict accountability and close supervision the exception and mutual back-scratching in the lower ranks the rule, where the code of silence and the falsified report cover up widespread work avoidance, short-cut methods, illicit violence, and pay-offs. In spite of this, there are clearly constraints on police behavior-institutional controls, formal or informal, that keep the police under rein to a greater or lesser extent. The book probes the various sources of organizational control, including formal internal disciplinary regulations, the norms and values of the occupational culture, external legal constraints, and the overriding need to prevent scandals. It also suggests ways of improving organizational control through managerial reforms that bring to key positions not just proficient bureaucrats but leaders at all levels within the force who possess insight and empathy into the inescapable dilemmas of the men and women on the line where the real police decisions are made. The book is interdisciplinary and international in its scope, representing the research and informed views of sociologists, students of management and public policy, and police from the United States, Great Britain, Belgium, and The Netherlands. Maurice Punch is Professor of Sociology at Nijenrode, The Netherlands School of Business. The book is fourth in The MIT Press Series on Organization Studies.
简介:"In Event-Cities (MIT Press, 1994), Bernard Tschumi expanded his architectural concerns to address the issue of cities and their making. Event-Cities 2 continues this project through new selections from his recent architectural projects. The book includes the first comprehensive documentation of the drawings for the award-winning Parc de la Villette (including many previously unpublished drawings), his project for the expansion of The Museum of Modern Art, two architecture schools, a concert and exhibition hall, a student's center, a railway station, a department store, and other urban projects. Tschumi suggests that architecture can accelerate the events of everyday life through new forms of organization. Using various modes of notation ranging from rough models to sophisticated computer-generated images, he reveals the complexities of the architectural process and the rich texture of events that define urban reality today."--BOOK JACKET.

简介: "in the field of statistical decision theory, raiffa and schlaifer have sought to develop new analytic techniques by which the modern theory of utility and subjective probability can actually be applied to the economic analysis of typical sampling problems." —from the foreword to their classic work applied statistical decision theory. first published in the 1960s through harvard university and mit press, the book is now offered in a new paperback edition from wiley
简介:This book solves a long-standing problem in computer vision, the interpretation of line drawings and, in doing so answers many of the concerns raised by this problem, particularly with regard to errors in the placement of lines and vertices in the images. Sugihara presents a computational mechanism that functionally mimics human perception in being able to generate three-dimensional descriptions of objects from two-dimensional line drawings. The objects considered are polyhedrons or solid objects bounded by planar faces, and the line drawings are single-view pictures of these objects. Sugihara's mechanism has several potential applications. It can facilitate man-machine communication by extracting object structures automatically from pictures drawn by a designer, which can be particularly useful in the computer-aided design of geometric objects, such as mechanical parts and buildings. It can also be used in the intermediate stage of computer vision systems used to obtain and analyze images in the outside world. The computational mechanism itself is not accompanied by a large database but is composed of several simple procedures based on linear algebra and combinatorial theory. Contents:Introduction. Candidates for Spatial Interpretation. Discrimination between Correct and Incorrect Pictures. Correctness of HiddenPart-Drawn Pictures. Algebraic Structures of Line Drawings. Combinatorial Structures of Line Drawings. Overcoming Superstrictness. Algorithmic Aspects of Generic Reconstructibility. Specification of Unique Shapes. Recovery of Shape from Surface Information. Polyhedrons and Rigidity. Kokichi Sugihara is Professor in the Department of Mathematical Engineering and instrumentation Physics, Faculty of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan. Machine interpretation of Line Drawingsis included in The MIT Press Series in Artificial Intelligence, edited by Patrick Henry Winston and Michael Brady.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 This solutions manual for Intermediate Public Economics (MIT Press, 2006) offers students an opportunity to practice using the analytical tools of public economics at intermediate and more advanced levels. The 424 exercises in the textbook (all of which are covered in the solutions manual) vary widely in nature and difficulty; some involve reflection on the models used and the discussion of assumptions and conclusions, while others work through general arguments in the text using specific functional forms. Several require the use of data to test theoretical predictions. The more challenging exercises explore and extend the material in the text. The Manual gives complete solutions to the analytical questions and provides guidance to the major points in the discussion problems, occasionally extending the discussion to related issues. In answers to the exercises analyzing data, the authors have kept the econometrics simple both in the estimation package employed and in the level of econometric sophistication. All regressions equations have been computed using Microsoft Excel. Advanced students can employ a wider range of test statistics and conduct appropriate integration tests on time series data. Professors and students will find this book an important resource for their work with the textbook. Publisher Summary 2 The solutions manual for all exercises in Intermediate Public Economics, allowing students to use the analytical tools of public economics at several levels.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 Los Angeles--the place without a sense of place, famous for sprawl and overdevelopment and defined by its car-clogged freeways--might seem inhospitable to ideas about connecting with nature and community. But in Reinventing Los Angeles, educator and activist Robert Gottlieb describes how imaginative and innovative social movements have coalesced around the issues of water development, cars and freeways, and land use, to create a more livable and sustainable city. Gottlieb traces the emergence of Los Angeles as a global city in the twentieth century and describes its continuing evolution today. He examines the powerful influences of immigration and economic globalization as they intersect with changes in the politics of water, transportation, and land use, and illustrates each of these core concerns with an account of grass roots and activist responses: efforts to reenvision the concrete-bound, fenced-off Los Angeles River as a natural resource; "Arroyofest," the closing of the Pasadena Freeway for a Sunday of walking and bike riding; and immigrants' initiatives to create urban gardens and connect with their countries of origin. Reinventing Los Angeles is a unique blend of personal narrative (Gottlieb himself participated in several of the grass roots actions described in the book) and historical and theoretical discussion. It provides a road map for a new environmentalism of everyday life, demonstrating the opportunities for renewal in a global city.Robert Gottlieb is Henry R. Luce Professor of Urban and Environmental Policy and Director of the Urban and Environmental Policy Institute at Occidental College in Los Angeles. He is the author of Environmentalism Unbound: Exploring New Pathways for Change (MIT Press), Forcing the Spring: The Transformation of the American Environmental Movement, and other books. Publisher Summary 2 Describes how water politics, cars and freeways, and immigration and globalization have shaped Los Angeles, and how innovative social movements are working to make a more livable and sustainable city.
简介:In a period marked by revisionism in economic theory and retrenchment in the public goals of economic policy, Tobin remains committed to the standard he has upheld throughout his professional life. He is an "eclectic Keynesian" in theory whose socioeconomic concern is to reduce poverty, inequality, and discrimination through the maintenance of full employment and economic growth and through such policies as the negative income tax and other income transfers. These 28 essays, covering Tobin's work in macroeconomics from the early 1940s to 1970 are grouped into three parts - macroeconomic theory, economic growth, and money and finance. James Tobin is Sterling Professor of Economics at Yale. Essays in Economics: Volume 3, Theory and Policy was published by The MIT Press in 1982. Back in print.
简介: Volume 2 of James Tobin's "Essays in Economics" brings together twenty papers published between 1940 and 1972. These cover macroeconomics, particularly the theory of the relationship between unemployment and inflation and the dilemma their connection poses for policy; consumption function, which is also related to macroeconomic theory and to the theory of individual behavior; consumer theory and statistical method applied to the problem of rationing; and the development and application of econometric methods suitable for the empirical analysis of consumer behavior. James Tobin received the Nobel Prize in 1981 and is Sterling Professor of Economics at Yale. "Essays in Economics, Volume 1: Macroeconomics" and "Volume 3: Theory and Policy" are both available from The MIT Press.
简介:In his popular book "Beyond the Moan, "Italian astronomer Paolo Maffei offered a celestial tour, guiding his readers on a trip to the farthest reaches of space and pointing out to them how, as the distances increased, individual stars could be seen clustered into galaxies, the galaxies themselves forming clusters, and those clusters in turn aggregating into superclusters ....In this sequel, Maffei invites us along on another journey, this one through time: "Extending oneself in time, " he writes, "is even more exhilarating than traveling in space. It is a little like feeling immortal." The itinerary follows time's arrow from the fireball of the Big Bang some 15 billion years ago to the present to various conceivable futures, some extending the world indefinitely through time, others bringing the world to a definite end."The Universe in Time" is structured as a series of embedded voyages first through the life cycle of the stars, then through that of planetary systems, and finally through both geological/ecological evolution and the origin and development of life on earth. Maffei explores the possibilities of extraterrestrial life before he steps back to take a broader time perspective and to discuss alternative theories of the origin, development, and fate of the universe as a whole. Paolo Maffei is Professor of Astronomy at the University of Perugia. The MIT Press has published translations of two of his previous books, "Beyond the Moon "and "Monsters in the Sky."
简介:In 1884 Sir William Thomson (later Lord Kelvin) delivered a significant series of lectures on physics at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. The lectures remain important because, through their explicit presentation of the theories and metaphysical assumptions of the Newtonian mechanistic tradition, they illuminate the roots of the revolution in physics that began around 1900. This book presents the twenty lectures in their original form for the first time. (A greatly revised version of the lectures appeared in 1904.) In addition, it contains ten original essays in which well-known historians and philosophers of science discuss the physical issues raised in the Baltimore Lectures and developments in theoretical physics since they were delivered. Several of the accompanying essays deal with differences between Kelvin's views of molecular dynamics and the wave theory of light and the ultimately more successful electromagnetic concepts of James Clerk Maxwell. Others consider G. F. FitzGerald's approach to the question of mechanical models and Ernest Rutherford's attitudes toward theoretical matters. The philosophical context of the Baltimore Lectures is taken up, along with the subsequent development of theoretical physics. Several essays reflect upon issues important in the era of relativity and quantum theory - among them the quantum-measurement problem, space-time and action at a distance, parts and wholes, locality and nonlocality, and the transition from natural philosophy to the metaphilosophy of science. Following an introduction by Robert W Kargon, the essayists who address theoretical physics in Kelvin's time and after are P. M. Harmon, Bruce J. Hunt, M. Norton Wise, Crosbie Smith, Howard Stein, Lawrence Badash, Abner Shimony, Paul Teller, John Earman, Arthur Fine, and Thomas Nickles. The editors are affiliated with the Center for the History and Philosophy of Science at the Johns Hopkins University. This volume is the second in a series published by The MIT Press for the Center. The first volume, Observation, Experiment, and Hypothesis in Modern Physical Science, edited by Peter Achinstein and Owen Hannaway, was published in 1985. A Bradford Book.
简介:This is the essential companion to Jeffrey Wooldridge's widely-used graduate text Econometric Analysis of Cross Section and Panel Data (MIT Press, 2001). Already established as a leading graduate econometrics text, the book offers an intuitive yet rigorous treatment of two methods used in econometric research, cross section and panel data techniques. The numerous end-of-chapter problems are an important component of the book, encouraging the student to use the analytical tools presented in the text. This manual contains answers to selected problems, new examples, and supplementary materials designed by the author. Users of the textbook will find the manual a necessary adjunct to the book.
简介:Robot Hands and the Mechanics of Manipulationexplores several aspects of the basic mechanics of grasping, pushing, and in general, manipulating objects. It makes a significant contribution to the understanding of the motion of objects in the presence of friction, and to the development of fine position and force controlled articulated hands capable of doing useful work. In the book's first section, kinematic and force analysis is applied to the problem of designing and controlling articulated hands for manipulation. The analysis of the interface between fingertip and grasped object then becomes the basis for the specification of acceptable hand kinematics. A practical result of this work has been the development of the Stanford/JPL robot hand - a tendon-actuated, 9 degree-of-freedom hand which is being used at various laboratories around the country to study the associated control and programming problems aimed at improving robot dexterity. Chapters in the second section study the characteristics of object motion in the presence of friction. Systematic exploration of the mechanics of pushing leads to a model of how an object moves under the combined influence of the manipulator and the forces of sliding friction. The results of these analyses are then used to demonstrate verification and automatic planning of some simple manipulator operations. Matthew T. Mason is Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie-Mellon University, and coeditor of Robot Motion (MIT Press 1983). J. Kenneth Salisbury, Jr. is a Research Scientist at MIT's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and president of Salisbury Robotics, Inc. Robot Hands and the Mechanics of Manipulationis 14th in the Artificial Intelligence Series, edited by Patrick Henry Winston and Michael Brady.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 These twenty lectures have been developed and refined by Professor Siebert during the more than two decades he has been teaching introductory Signals and Systems courses at MIT. The lectures are designed to pursue a variety of goals in parallel: to familiarize students with the properties of a fundamental set of analytical tools; to show how these tools can be applied to help understand many important concepts and devices in modern communication and control engineering practice; to explore some of the mathematical issues behind the powers and limitations of these tools; and to begin the development of the vocabulary and grammar, common images and metaphors, of a general language of signal and system theory. Although broadly organized as a series of lectures, many more topics and examples (as well as a large set of unusual problems and laboratory exercises) are included in the book than would be presented orally. Extensive use is made throughout of knowledge acquired in early courses in elementary electrical and electronic circuits and differential equations. Contents:Review of the "classical" formulation and solution of dynamic equations for simple electrical circuits; The unilateral Laplace transform and its applications; System functions; Poles and zeros; Interconnected systems and feedback; The dynamics of feedback systems; Discrete-time signals and linear difference equations; The unilateral Z-transform and its applications; The unit-sample response and discrete-time convolution; Convolutional representations of continuous-time systems; Impulses and the superposition integral; Frequency-domain methods for general LTI systems; Fourier series; Fourier transforms and Fourier's theorem; Sampling in time and frequency; Filters, real and ideal; Duration, rise-time and bandwidth relationships: The uncertainty principle; Bandpass operations and analog communication systems; Fourier transforms in discrete-time systems; Random Signals; Modern communication systems.
