简介:Thomas Gardner argues in this original study that we are just beginning, as a culture, to understand the far-reaching impliations of Emily Dickinson's work. Looking at the way quite different writers have enacted and fleshed-out crucial aspects of her poetry, Gardner gives us a Dickinson for our times. Beginning with the work of Lucie Brock-Broido, Alice Fulton, Kathleen Fraser, and Robert Hass, Gardner moves on to analytical chapters and fully developed conversations with four writers in whose work he finds the fullest extension of Dickinson's legacy. The interviews with these four - Marilynne Robinson, Charles Wright, Susan Howe, and Jorie Graham - provide a particularly intimate look at writers at work. In returning to Dickinson's work, Gardner observes, contemporary writers have powerfully extended what he calls her poetics of broken responsiveness in which an acknowledgment of limits leads, paradoxically, to a deep engagement with a world beyond our capacity to master or possess. In the hands of our most important poets and novelists, Dickinson's "emptying of the articulate self" has become a potent means of addressing some of our culture's fundamental erotic, religious, philospohical, and social questions. A Door Ajar makes visible the Dickinson that will matter to writers and readers over the next several decades. (Publisher)
简介:Co-authored by Minnesota authors Kathleen A. Baxter and Marcia Agness Kochel. Research indicates boys are interested in reading nonfiction materials, yet most children's librarians prefer to booktalk fiction. Offering citations for more than 1,100 books, Gotcha for Guys! deals specifically with books to pique the interest of middle grade boys. A series of booktalks are grouped within chapters with like titles such as: "Creepy-Crawly Creatures," "Disasters and Unsolved Mysteries," "Action and Innovation," and "All Things Gross." Complete booktalks are presented in a beginning section of chapters 1-9. A second section in each of these chapters contains short annotations and talks for other books of interest, and a third section offers lists of well-reviewed titles to consider for boys. The book is enhanced with book cover art and reproducible lists for teachers and librarians. - Back cover.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 Oxford Approaches to Classical Literature(Series Editors: Kathleen Coleman and Richard Rutherford) introduces individual works of Greek and Latin literature to readers who are approaching them for the first time. Each volume sets the work in its literary and historical context, and aims to offer a balanced and engaging assessment of its content, artistry, and purpose. A brief survey of the influence of the work upon subsequent generations is included to demonstrate its enduring relevance and power. All quotations from the original are translated into English. Plato's Symposiumtells of a dinner party at a crucial point in Athenian history at which the guests decide that they will each in turn deliver a speech in praise of love. The humorous and brilliant work that follows points the way towards all Western thinking about love. The Symposiumis also one of Plato's most sophisticated meditations on the practice of philosophy. This book introduces the literary and historical context of Plato's work, surveys and explains the arguments, and considers why Plato has cast this work in a highly unusual narrative form. A final chapter traces the influence of the Symposiumfrom antiquity to the modern day.

简介:"March, 1850. In the tense days, before the Civil War, a slave breakout in the labyrinthine swamps of Maryland's eastern shore sets loose a riveting drama of violence, hope, and redemption among slave catchers, plantation owners, watermen, runaway, slaves, and free blacks. Liz Spocott, a beautiful runaway slave, shot and neat death, is wracked by disturbing visions of the future as she lies shackled to an old woman in the prison attic of the notorious female slave-trader Patty Cannon and her gang. The ancient nameless woman reveals "the Code," a fiercely guarded cryptic means of communication for slaves on the run. Armed with an array of words that she does not understand, Liz escapes once again, but now must evade an enraged Party Cannon and a new nemesis, Denwood Long - a troubled slave catcher and waterman, who is coaxed our of retirement to break the Code. As she makes her desperate run, Liz is thrust upon the denizens of the swampy peninsula: the handsome slave Amber, the terrifyingly wild Woolman, the widowed Kathleen Sullivan. Meanwhile Liz's extraordinary dreams of tomorrow create a freedom-seeking furor among the once complacent slave community. The mysterious disappearance of two children, one white and one-black, seeds an explosive ending." "Filled with rich history - much of the story is drawn from historical events - and told in McBride's signature lyrical style, Song Yet Sing brings into full view a world long misunderstood in American fiction: slavery's haunting choices, pressing both whites and blacks to search for relief in a world where all seemed to lose their moral compass. This is a story of tragic triumph, violent decisions, and unexpected kindness."--BOOK JACKET.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 Four graduate students and a faculty mentor articulate how their work as educators has shaped and been shaped by the interplay among critical, feminist, postcolonial, and postmodern theories. They explore the location of politics in the roles of teacher and mother and mother as teacher and the ambiguity of supervision and authority, the nature of collaboration, the discomfort with using themselves and their histories as subjects for research, and deconstructing the collaborative process. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or. Publisher Summary 2 "This book presents testimony of "feminisms" in process. The accounts are filled with tensions, not least an uneasiness with feminism itself, and the question of what exactly it means to be a feminist in education in the contemporary world. It is their respect for their own differences and the honesty with which they write that makes this such a rich text." From the Foreword by Kathleen Weiler Educators committed to social change face the common dilemma of how to take up the work of transformation without reinscribing systems of domination. The struggle with the concept of imposition is central to the emergence of many educators' identities and provides a site for exploring the complex relationship between power, knowledge, and teacher identity. This book chronicles the collaborative efforts of five diverse women educators (Native American, European, Jewish American, rural, midwestern, working class) to grapple with the tensions of taking up a political position while honoring the cultural, social, and historical context of others. Their dialogue across feminist, critical, and postmodern theories and practices explores the process of fusing theory with political work in the world. What emerges is the continual repositioning and disruption of taken for granted meanings as central to enhancing emancipatory education.
简介:"Monumental in scope and extraordinary in sensitivity, The Kennedy Women chronicles five matrilineal generations in our nation's premier political dynasty. Not merely distinguished cultural history, it is a story of epic sweep, brimming with triumph and tragedy, courage and compliance, self-sacrifice and self-delusion." "Moving from steerage on an immigrant vessel to the slums of Boston, from the Court of St. James's to the White House and beyond, The Kennedy Women paints startling, in-depth portraits of the mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters who stood beside some of the most dynamic men of the twentieth century through occasions of great opulence and heartbreak, victory and scandal. Among its revelations: how Rose's marriage almost ended on her wedding day; the poignantly detailed life stories of mentally challenged Rosemary and the glorious, lost Kathleen; Jackie's near death in the weeks before the inauguration; Eunice's struggle, despite chronic illness, to build the Special Olympics; a long-guarded account of Rose's response to Chappaquiddick; Jean Kennedy Smith's and the family's private reactions to the William Kennedy Smith rape charges; Jackie's gallant battle to live and die with dignity and privacy; and the unique challenges and pressures confronting future Kennedy matriarchs Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, Maria Shriver Schwarzenegger, Kerry Kennedy Cuomo, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, and Rory Kennedy." "Here, finally, is the women's story; even those who feel they know all there is to know about the Kennedys will discover how much more there is to the story. For five years, Laurence Leamer researched this book, receiving unprecedented cooperation from family members, interviewing scores of relatives and close associates, gaining access to hundreds of personal documents. Included are thirty-two pages of rare and fascinating family photographs.". "The Kennedy Women combines exhaustive and superb scholarship with a gripping narrative that will alter forever our perception of America's royal family."--BOOK JACKET.

简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 For more than half a century, the celebrated historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., has been the guiding force of American liberalism, both intellectually and in practice. The author of many critically acclaimed books, Schlesinger vigorously defended FDR's New Deal policies in his earliest writings and later served as a close advisor to President John F. Kennedy. In this volume, twenty of today's most eminent historians join forces to explore Schlesinger's unique brand of liberalism--one that has steered clear of ideological extremism and social fragmentation, favoring instead pluralism and the pragmatic use of state power. By engaging the reader in various aspects of his career and intellectual pursuits, these essays offer an exhilarating journey through American political history, from the Jackson era to multiculturalism, while demonstrating historical writing at its best. The volume opens with essays on Schlesinger as a historian and a political participant, contributed by William E. Leuchtenburg, Hugh Thomas, George Kennan, John Kenneth Galbraith, and John Morton Blum. The influence of the Jackson era is explored by Robert Remini, Sean Wilentz, and Jean V. Matthews. In a section on modern liberalism and governance, such topics as the New Deal, the Great Society, and the fate of liberalism under the Carter administration are discussed by Alan Brinkley, Kathleen D. McCarthy, Fred Siegel, Leo P. Ribuffo, and Richard C. Wade. Betty Miller Unterberger and Ronald Steel comment on liberalism and the Cold War. Louis Menand and Eugene D. Genovese explore ideological controversies within liberalism, including pragmatic liberalism and relativism and multiculturalism. In the final section, George Cotkin, Neil Jumonville, and Sir Isaiah Berlin write on three figures whom Schlesinger greatly admired: William James, Henry Steel Commager, and Edmund Wilson.

简介: A horse is a horse of course unless of course the horse is Black Beauty. Animal-loving children have been devoted to Black Beauty throughout this century, and no doubt will continue through the next. Although Anna Sewell's classic paints a clear picture of turn-of-the-century London, its message is universal and timeless: animals will serve humans well if they are treated with consideration and kindness. Black Beauty tells the story of the horse's own long and varied life, from a well-born colt in a pleasant meadow to an elegant carriage horse for a gentleman to a painfully overworked cab horse. Throughout, Sewell rails--in a gentle, 19th-century way--against animal maltreatment. Young readers will follow Black Beauty's fortunes, good and bad, with gentle masters as well as cruel. Children can easily make the leap from horse-human relationships to human-human relationships, and begin to understand how their own consideration of others may be a benefit to all. (Ages 9 to 12) --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. In this abridgement of Sewell's classic story, McKinley has managed nicely to retain Beauty's unique voice as well as the most-remembered stories, while making the text more accessible to younger readers. Jeffers's fine ink illustrations will satisfy even the most demanding of horse-lovers with her ability to capture each horse's personality. This version brings back the sharpness of the cruelty towards Beauty and his companions, and McKinley has rightfully retained the pain and the ugliness of some of the incidents. Children will still weep at the death of Ginger, and Jeffers's portrayal of the barn fire is quite frightening. It's an elegant edition, which will linger with readers until they are ready to tackle the original. (All ages Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Grade 2-5 Sewell's classic tale of ahorse's fortunes and adversities has been a favorite since it was written over 100 years ago. Now McKinley offers a new abridgment which, while honing the original almost to spareness, loses none of the beauty of Sewell's poetic prose. Although some of the less important incidents and descriptive passages have necessarily been omitted, there is still every essential element of the plot here to delight readers as Black Beauty's story unfolds. But it is Jeffers' illustrations (pen-and-ink with watercolor wash) that bring this book to a level above the ordinary. Intensely yet sensitively wrought, there is a fine attention to detail, down to veins and quivering nostrils. The horses are never allowed to descend to the anthropomorphic tone of the text, and although Jeffers' human portrayals suffer by comparison with their equine counterparts, they are nonetheless keenly done. Given the demand for simpler versions of children's classics, this one won't stay on the shelf long; it is wonderful as a read-aloud, or for independent readers. Kathleen Brachmann, Highland Park Public Library, Ill. Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From a life of comfort to one of labor, the famous horse, Black Beauty, encounters both good and bad people while revealing how animals suffer as much from thoughtlessness as from malice. This classic makes the transition from the written to the spoken word with flair and is as varied and interesting as the characters themselves. Lambert uses a forceful and well-paced narrative style, and his vocal characterizations are just right. This well-crafted audio presentation tells Black Beauty's story in all its splendor. M.R. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition. A handsome foal with promising beginnings is passed from owner to owner and soon learns the particular cruelties of hard masters and the rich in this horse story. The audio version, narrated by Martin Jarvis, abridges and brings alive the high points of Sewell's classic. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. When I was a child I loved animals, especially horses. Yet I couldnt resist teasing them, even being cruel to them. BLACK BEAUTY was one of my favorite books, and I read it over and over again. It helped me realize that animals should be treated with compassion. -- Marian Flandrick Bray, author of horse stories, including Flight of the Swan in the anthology HERDS OF THUNDER, MANES OF GOLD --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
