Stanton has captured animpressive array of expressions on his subjects: a cheeky Himalayansticking out its tongue, a regally bored Bengal, a gentle KurilianBobtail asleep beside a parrot. The text consists of simple rhymesdesigned to describe different types of cats and what they do. SueStainton's I Love Cats (Harper Collins, 2007) and PatriciaHubbell's I Like Cats (North-South, 2003) are just a couple ofsimilar titles that come to mind. The inclusion of furry tails topat, flaps to lift, and tabs to pull is designed to engage youngreaders, although it will probably just lead to damaged books. Through eighty-three color plates, nineteen black-and-white illustrations, and six thematic essays, the collection examines depictions of plantation structures, plantation views, and related slave imagery and art in the context of the American landscape tradition, addressing the impact of these works on race relations in the United States.
