简介:Many of the 65 authors collected here are themselves theory heavyweights: Judith Butler, Rodophe Gasch , Stanley Fish, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Barbara Johnson, Seyla Benhabib, Fredric Jameson, Terry Eagleton, Drucilla Cornell, Paul de Man, Emanuel Levinas, and Gayatri Spivak. The 67 articles are reprinted from a slew of books, and such journals as , and . Norris has authored many respected books on Derrida and deconstruction, and Roden appears a rather recent Ph.D. from Cardiff University with no books (yet) to his credit. The editors' aim has been to gather a group of articles representing opposing views, but to avoid what they call "polemical 'responses' which...allow prejudice to get in the way of reasoned or principled counter-argument." The set's organizing principle is Derrida's anti- foundationalism as it relates to Husserl's phenomenology; Austin's speech-act theory; feminist theory, and the role of communitarianism, naturalism, and rationalism in politics, ethics, and jurisprudence. Articles are preceded by the editors' 32-page introduction. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
简介:The book analyzes Ishmael Reed [Mumbo Jumbo], Kathy Acker [The Adult Life of Toulouse Lautrec by Henri Toulouse Lautrec], and Don Delillo [White Noise], three authors whom critics cite as quintessentially postmodern. For these critics such works possess formal narrative and/or content qualities at odds with modernism. In particular, according to influential thinkers like Fredric Jameson, postmodern works possess narrative form and/or content which eschews reality, and embody a fundamental paradigm shift from the politically committed ideology of modernity and modernism to the politically relativistic ideology of postmodernity and postmodernism. The book contends that while the above authors do possess numerous so-called "postmodern" qualities, their critical forms and/or contents remain ethically and politically grounded. As most postmodern theory rejects such grounding, its discovery in these prototypical postmodern novels suggests problems with the "postmodern" category itself.

简介:Fredric Jameson has been described as probably the most important cultural critic writing in English today and he is widely acknowledged as the foremost proponent for the tradition of critical theory known as Western Marxism.Yet his work has not been given the systematic review like other contemporary thinkers like Fooucault and Derrida. Fredric Jameson: Marxism, Hermeneutics, Postmodernism is a thoroughly up-to-date, detailed review and analysis of the work of this influential intellectual. Covering Jameson's work and thought from his early projects of form and history to his more recent engagements with postmodernism and cultural politics, this synthesis offers a balanced assessment of his ideas, their development and their continuing influence.

简介:Now in paperback, Fredric Jameson's most wide-ranging work seeks to crystalize a definition of "postmodernism." 简介: With a new foreword by Charles Lemert . 'Its greatness...lies in ceaseless and varied use of the money form to unearth and conceptually reveal incommensurabilities of all kinds, in social reality fully as much as in thought itself.' - Fredric Jameson . In The Philosophy of Money, Georg Simmel puts money on the couch. He provides us with a classic analysis of the social, psychological and philosophical aspects of the money economy, full of brilliant insights into the forms that social relationships take. He analyzes the relationships of money to exchange, human personality, the position of women, and individual freedom. Simmel also offers us prophetic insights into the consequences of the modern money economy and the division of labour, in particular the processes of alienation and reification in work and urban life. . An immense and profound piece of work it demands to be read today and for years to come as a stunning account of the meaning, use and culture of money.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 "Fredric Jameson is America's leading Marxist critic. A prodigiously energetic thinker whose writings sweep majestically from Sophocles to science fiction."-Terry Eagleton "Probably the most important cultural critic writing in English today...It can be truly said that nothing cultural is alien to him."-Colin MacCabe "Fredric Jameson preserved and extended the legacy of Marxism for a generation of intellectuals."-Benjamin Kunkel, London Review of Books In this major new study, philosopher and cultural theorist Fredric Jameson offers an innovative reading of a book that forms part of the bedrock of modern Western thought Hegers Phenomenology of Spirit. Whereas other writers have interpreted the Phenomenology as a rigidly dosed system, Jameson discovers it to be a more fluid, open-ended work. Hegel's mind is revealed to be a less systematic mechanism than normally thought, one whose ideas never solidify into pure abstractions. The conclusion of the Phenomenology, on the aftermath of the French Revolution, is examined as a provisional stalemate between the political and the social霉a situation from which Jameson draws important lessons for our own age. Publisher Summary 2 Jameson (comparative literature, Duke U.), who is esteemed for his works of literary theory, offers a critical analysis of the influential work by Hegel. Situating Hegel's essay against the background of Kant, Jameson keeps a tight focus on the concept of Geist, or Spirit, so central to the essay, relating Hegel's use of the term to his development of the concept of history. The richness of Jameson's analysis is spellbinding, leading readers through a close reading of Hegel's essay to demonstrate Hegel's thoughts on language and culture, and the implications from his writing on the French Revolution to fascism, imperialism, and ultimately, globalization. Quotations are presented at length, in English followed by the original German. 简介:In such celebrated works as Postmodernism: The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism, Fredric Jameson has established himself as one of America’s most observant cultural commentators. In Signatures of the Visible, Jameson turns his attention to cinema - the artform that has replaced the novel as the defining cultural form of our time. Historicizing a form that has flourished in a post-modern and anti-historical culture, he explores the allegorical and ideological dimensions of such films as The Shining, Dog Day Afternoon and the works of Alfred Hitchcock, among many others. Fifteen years on from its original publication, this remains a piercing and original analysis of film from a writer and thinker whose influence continues to be felt long after that of the fashionable post-modernists he has always critiqued.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 Dissects the intricate connections between the playwright's drama and politics, demonstrating the way these combined to shape a unique and powerful influence on a profoundly troubled epoch. Publisher Summary 2 The legacy of Bertolt Brecht is much contested, whether by those who wish to forget or to vilify his politics, but his stature as the outstanding political playwright and poet of the twentieth century is unforgettably established in this major critical work. Fredric Jameson elegantly dissects the intricate connections between Brecht's drama and politics, demonstrating the way these combined to shape a unique and powerful influence on a profoundly troubled epoch. Jameson sees Brecht's method as a multi-layered process of reflection and self-reflection, reference and self-reference, which tears open a gap for individuals to situate themselves historically, to think about themselves in the third person, and to use that self-projection in history as a basis for judgement. Emphasising the themes of separation, distance, multiplicity, choice and contradiction in Brecht's entire corpus, Jameson's study engages in a dialogue with a cryptic work, unpublished in Brecht's lifetime, entitled Me-ti; Book of Twists and Turns. This text is seen by Jameson as key to understanding Brecht's critical reflections on dialectics and his orientally informed fascination with flow and flux, change and the non-eternal. For Jameson, Brecht is not prescriptive but performative. His plays do not provide answers but attempt to show people how to perform the act of thinking, how to begin to search for answers themselves. Brecht represents the ceaselessness of transformation while at the same time alienating it, interrupting it, making it comprehensible by making it strange. And thereby, in breaking it up by analysis, the possibility emerges of its reconstitution under a new law.
简介:Rey Chow is arguably one of the most prominent intellectuals working in the humanities today. Characteristically confronting both entrenched and emergent issues in the interlocking fields of literature, film and visual studies, sexuality and gender, postcolonialism, ethnicity, and cross-cultural politics, her works produce surprising connections among divergent topics at the same time as they compel us to think through the ethical and political ramifications of our academic, epistemic, and cultural practices. This anthology - the first to collect key moments in Chow's engaging thought - provides readers with an ideal introduction to some of her most forceful theoretical explorations. Organized into two sections, each of which begins with a brief statement designed to establish linkages among various discursive fields through Chow's writings, the anthology also contains an extensive Editor's Introduction, which situates Chow's work in the context of contemporary critical debates. For all those pursuing transnational cultural theory and cultural studies, this book is an essential resource. Praise for Rey Chow "[Rey Chow is] methodologically situated in the contentious spaces between critical theory and cultural studies, and always attending to the implications of ethnicity."& mdash; Social Semiotics "Rich and powerful work that provides both a dazzling synthesis of contemporary cultural theory and at the same time an exemplary critique of Chinese cinema."& mdash;China Information "Should be read by all who are concerned with the future of human rights, liberalism, multiculturalism, identity politics, and feminism."& mdash;Dorothy Ko "Wide-ranging, theoretically rich, and provocative... completely restructures the problem of ethnicity."& mdash;Fredric Jameson
简介: For more than thirty years, Fredric Jameson has been one of the most productive, wide-ranging, and distinctive literary theorists in the United States and the Anglophone world. Marxism and Form provided a pioneering account of the work of the major European Marxist theorists--T. W. Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Herbert Marcuse, Ernst Bloch, Georg Lukcs, and Jean-Paul Sartre--work that was, at the time, largely neglected in the English-speaking world. Through penetrating readings of each theorist, Jameson developed a critical mode of engagement that has had tremendous in.uence. He provided a framework for analyzing the connection between art and the historical circumstances of its making--in particular, how cultural artifacts distort, repress, or transform their circumstances through the abstractions of aesthetic form. Jameson's presentation of the critical thought of this Hegelian Marxism provided a stark alternative to the Anglo-American tradition of empiricism and humanism. It would later provide a compelling alternative to poststructuralism and deconstruction as they became dominant methodologies in aesthetic criticism. One year after Marxism and Form, Princeton published Jameson's The Prison-House of Language(1972), which provided a thorough historical and philosophical description of formalism and structuralism. Both books remain central to Jameson's main intellectual legacy: describing and extending a tradition of Western Marxism in cultural theory and literary interpretation.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 A convenient introduction to Jameson's key writings on postmodernism. No one would contest that Fredric Jameson, one of the leading Marxist critics in the English-speaking world, has had an immense impact on the way we now understand the phenomenon of postmodernism. His classic work, Postmodernism, or The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism, has been widely acclaimed as the seminal analysis of postmodernity from a cultural, philosophical and historical perspective. Jameson's reflections have become an essential reference-point for all those attempting to engage with postmodernism. However, until now his key writings on postmodernism have been unavailable in an easily accessible and affordable form. This book, designed as a short and convenient introduction to Jameson's thought for both the student and the general reader, meets this need. Jameson on Postmodernism includes: * "Postmodernism and Consumer Society," Jameson's classic analysis of postmodernity * "Marxism and Postmodernism," in which Jameson responds to his critics * "Theories of the Postmodern," his survey of alternative approaches * "The Antinomies of Postmodernity," an extract from his recently published work, The Seeds of Time, in which he surveys the philosophical tensions embedded in the postmodern * "'End of Art' or 'End of History?'" and "Transformations of the Image in Postmodernity," two pieces hitherto unpublished in English on art and the image in the postmodern epoch. The Cultural Turn is an indispensable reference guide to the most arresting and substantial theorists of postmodernism.
简介:A handsome new edition of the seminal collection of late-twentieth-century cultural criticism. Named a Best Book of the Year by the Village Voiceand considered a bible of contemporary cultural criticism, The Anti-Aestheticis reissued now in a handsome new paperback edition. For the past twenty years, Hal Foster has pushed the boundaries of cultural criticism, establishing a vantage point from which the seemingly disparate agendas of artists, patrons, and critics have a telling coherence. In The Anti-Aesthetic, preeminent critics such as Jean Baudrillard, Rosalind Krauss, Fredric Jameson, and Edward Said consider the full range of postmodern cultural production, from the writing of John Cage, to Cindy Sherman's film stills, to Barbara Kruger's collages. With a redesigned cover and a new afterword that situates the book in relation to contemporary criticism, The Anti-Aestheticprovides a strong introduction for newcomers and a point of reference for those already engaged in discussions of postmodern art, culture, and criticism. New afterword by Hal Foster; 12 b/w photographs.

简介:Tribal Warfare thoroughly investigates a central element of the hit reality television show Survivor that the existing literature on reality television has overlooked: class politics. Christopher J. Wright combines textual analysis and survey research to demonstrate that Survivor operates and resonates as a political allegory. Using the work of Fredric Jameson, this book reveals how Survivor frames its 'characters' as 'haves' and 'have-nots.' For those new to Jameson, Wright breaks down the theorist's complex notion of the political unconscious into easily understandable language. Furthermore, using the results of a survey of Survivor viewers, Tribal Warfare demonstrates that viewers divide along gender, racial, age, and--most significantly--class-related lines in their consumption of, and reaction to, the program. The first book to explore the premise of 'Survivor as society,' this unique work serves as both an engaging analysis of a popular television program and a highly readable primer for those new to critical theory.
简介:This revised edition of Pip Jones's extremely popular introduction to social theory, now benefiting from the collaboration of Shaun Le Boutillier and Liz Bradbury, has been carefully and thoroughly updated with the latest developments in this continually changing field. Written in a refreshingly lucid and engaging style, Introducing Social Theory provides readers with a wide-ranging, well organized and thematic introduction to all the major thinkers, issues and debates in classical and contemporary social theory. Introducing Social Theory traces the development of social theorizing from the classical ideas about modernity of Durkheim, Marx and Weber, right up to a uniquely accessible review of contemporary theoretical controversies in sociology surrounding post-modernity and reflexive sociology. With great clarity, the authors explain the ideas of seminal thinkers such as Foucault, Bauman, Habermas, Beck, Bourdieu and Giddens, as well as paying increased attention to other important contributions from theorists such as Margaret Archer, Fredric Jameson and George Ritzer. Introducing Social Theory is the ideal textbook for students at all levels taking courses in sociology, from A-level students to undergraduates, who are looking to engage with social theory. Remarkably easy to follow and understand, the new edition lives up to its predecessor's goal that students need never be intimidated by social theory again.
