简介:W. H. Auden was the greatest English poet of the twentieth century. As witness to many of the century’s pivotal moments - Berlin in the 1920s, Spain and China in the 1930s, wartime and postwar America - and because of his consuming quest to translate the social, political, and cultural upheavals into poetry, his importance at century’s end is undeniable. It is Richard Davenport-Hines’ achievement in this biography (the first in fifteen years) to make clear the extent of Auden’s achievement - as a poet, a librettist, and an essayist - and to show how his works serve as a commentary on the wars, ideologies, spiritual questioning, and sexual attitudes of the time in which he lived. Auden’s ambition was to be a great poet. Beyond his intense need to experience and to be consumed by experience, there was also an inexhaustible curiosity about ideas, a passion for understanding, and a desire for wisdom. In an age when heroic conceptions are no longer useful, Auden’s outer and inner travels and his dedication to writing establish his life as a model of what it means to be a poet today, and underscore the tremendous cost, in the words of Auden’s friend Hannah Arendt, of following the "heart’s invisible furies." In Auden, Davenport-Hines has given us a portrait that is fresh, convincing and exemplary.
简介:Thomas Hardy is among the best-loved of the great English poets, perhaps drawing his great popularity from the elegaic tone of much of his finest verse and the universality of his subject matter: birth, childhood, love, marriage, age, and death. Those elegies inspired by the death of his first wife Emma are some of his best, and are well represented in this new selection of his verse. Prepared by Samuel Hynes, the editor of the definitive Oxford English Texts Complete Works of Thomas Hardy, this volume includes a selection of Hardy's poetry that spans his life, verses that influenced later poets as diverse as Robert Graves and Philip Larkin, Ezra Pound and W.H. Auden. About the Series:For over 100 yearsOxford World's Classicshas made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Eliot, Woolf, Auden, Huxley, Lessing, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Tony Kushner, among others"--Provided by publisher.
简介:This is a study of a literary generation writing in a period of expanding fears and ever more urgent political and social crises. The pace of the time itself, the sense of time passing and an end approaching gave a special quality to the Thirties. The public world pressed insistently on the private world. For those who came of literary age - Auden, Day Lewis, MacNeice, Spender, Graham Greene, Isherwood and Orwell among them - writing became a form of action. In the process a generation discovered itself and found its own expression.
简介: Ben Hickman argues that we must attend to Ashbery's radical conception of reading if we are to understand the originality of his writing. Hickman focuses on Ashbery's reading of English poets, including Andrew Marvell, John Donne, William Wordsworth, John Clare, T. S. Eliot and W. H. Auden, and examines Ashbery's writing in terms of an 'aesthetic of inattention'. Hickman critiques the Americanisation of Ashbery's work as well as common assumptions about his Romanticism, his avant-garde Modernism and his engagement with the historical present. He demonstrates that Ashbery's generosity as a writer is closely tied to his generosity, inattention and situatedness as a reader.
简介:This collection of social, political and cultural history writings from the 1930s, still dominated by the "Auden generation", brings together important texts of the period and makes accessible some of the key writings of the decade which are either difficult to locate or have long been out of print. It offers students the opportunity to explore the ideas behind the fiction, poetry, art and music of the period.
简介:During the past 50 years the study of literature has given successive prominence to history, formalism and to theory. Throughout his distinguished career, and in such books as "The Sense of an Ending", "The Classic", "The Genesis of Secrecy", "Forms of Attention and History" and "Value", Frank Kermode has always kept these features of literature simultaneously in focus. In this book, he sets out to reestablish contact between literary history and poetic form in readings of Horace, Marvell and Auden. In part an explicit comment on new historicism, this lecture is accompanied by a manifesto for literary study of the Bible informed by historical scholarship, techniques of close reading and by the theory of narrative. This book offers both a view of Frank Kermode's current preoccupations and a sense of their place in his intellectual career.
简介: The Art of Eating "…only wise men know the art of eating." —Brillat-Savarin "There is a communion of more than bodies when bread is broken and wine is drunk. And that is my answer when people ask me, Why do you write about hunger, and not wars or love?" So M. F. K. Fisher begins The Gastronomical Me, one of the five memorable volumes collected together here in The Art of Eating. The five books cover an eclectic array of thoughts, memories, and recipes, from World War I vignettes of frugality at the table to a consideration of the social status of vegetables. Her recipes range from those for all manner of oysters, dressed and undressed, to Cold Buttermilk Soup, and are accompanied by the remarks and observations that provoked W. H. Auden to say, "I do not know of anyone in the United States today who writes better prose." "M. F. K. Fisher evokes the magic that shimmers just beneath the surface of the most commonplace, everyday experiences in prose you can wrap around your soul." —Richard Sax, Chocolatier "M. F. K. Fisher is one of the best food writers. She makes you laugh, tells you stories, intrigues your mind, gives you an appetite, takes you on her travels. She is witty, wise, and unpretentious." —Jane Grigson "One of the world's finest food writers and, in the eyes of many, the grand dame of gastronomy…M. F. K. Fisher has remained our guiding light, the source of infinite gastronomic and philosophic wisdom, the model of what a truly refined food writer should strive for." —James Villas, Bon Appétit
简介:"The Title to the Poem is a theoretical, critical, and historical exploration of the traditions for titling shorter poems by British and American poets from the beginnings of printing to the present." "The first six chapters are distinguished according to the nature of the question a reader might ask about the poem, which the title purports to answer. Who gives the title? Who has thetitle? Who "says" the poem? Who "hears" the poem? What genre does the poem belong to? What is the poem "about"? There are complex relationships between what titles purport to tell and what they actually tell, and this is true not only of titles so worded that they demand interpretation, but also of those that appear straightforward." "Though the choice of examples aims at range and variety, certain British and American poets havebeen exceptionally influential in their contributions to the course of titling in English, so their work receives special and repeated attention here. These poets have not only been unusually innovative in modifying traditional title forms or inventing new ones, but have brought into focus fundamental issues of titling by the nature of theirexperiments. They are Jonson, Wordsworth, Browning, Whitman, Hardy, Frost, Williams, Stevens, Auden, and, in our time, Ashbery."--BOOK JACKET.

简介: "If we are absolutely modern—and we are—it's because Rimbaud commanded us to be."—John Ashbery, from the preface First published in 1886, Arthur Rimbaud’s Illuminations―the work of a poet who had abandoned poetry before the age of twenty-one―changed the language of poetry. Hallucinatory and feverishly hermetic, it is an acknowledged masterpiece of world literature, still unrivaled for its haunting blend of sensuous detail and otherworldly astonishment. In Ashbery's translation of this notoriously elusive text, the acclaimed poet and translator lends his inimitable voice to a venerated classic. W. H. Auden recognized the strong affinities between Ashbery's poetry and Rimbaud's Illuminationsin his 1956 introduction to Ashbery's first book, Some Trees, noting that "the imaginative life of the human individual stubbornly continues to live by the old magical notions." And it is here, in the "crystalline jumble" and "disordered collection of magic lantern slides" of Illuminations, as Ashbery writes in the Preface, that we can rediscover this essential lineage. "Absolute modernity" was for Rimbaud "acknowledging the simultaneity of all of life, the condition that nourishes poetry at every second. [...] If we are absolutely modern―and we are―it's because Rimbaud commanded us to be." Ashbery's idiomatic and lyrical translations of these forty-four texts convey the originality of Rimbaud's vision to English-speaking readers of a new century.

简介:The articles in Contextualized Stylistics, written especially to honour the work of Peter Verdonk, one of the leading figures in the field of stylistics over the last twenty years, represent the state of the art in literary linguistics. A wide range of approaches, from traditional stylistic analysis to innovative new directions, is to be found here in literary contexts as varied as the writings of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Donne, Pope, Sterne, Browning, Yeats, Auden, Joyce, British surrealist poetry, urban and political graffiti, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Jane Gardam, contemporary Anglo-Irish fiction, modern comic satire and Flann O'Brien. Among the contributors are some of the foremost theorists and practitioners working in the field today: Walter Nash, Peter Stockwell, Willie van Peer, Keith Green, Tony Bex, Michael Burke, Mick Short, Jonathan Culpeper, Elena Semino, Michael Toolan, Jean-Jacques Weber, Gerard Steen, Henry Widdowson, and Paul Simpson. Olga Fischer and Katie Wales contribute a Foreword, and Ronald Carter an Afterword. A number of Professor Verdonk's colleagues have also contributed articles from a more literary perspective. This book is an essential addition to the personal library of any researcher interested in the interface and connections between language and literature, and it would make an excellent course reader for undergraduate students in both literary and linguistic studies.

作者: (英)乔治·麦克唐纳著;韩祯译=At the back of the north wind
而C.S.
James Merrill and W. H. Auden offers a substantial analysis of the literary and personal relationship betweentwo major twentieth-century poets. As Gwiazda argues, Auden's prominence in the post-World War II American poetry scene as a homosexual poet and critic makes his impact on Merrill particularly noteworthy. Merrill's imaginary recreation of Auden in his occult verse trilogy The Changing Light at Sandover (1982) offers a powerful statement about the dynamics of poetic influence between gay male poets. Combining archival research, textual analysis, and aspects of queer theory, James Merrill and W. H. Auden examines Sandover's implications to the contentious issues of homosexual identity and self-representation."--BOOK JACKET.
简介:"Hemingway and Faulkner In Their Time is not only a valuable addition to literary scholarship, it is a unique re-creation of an era in American culture and letters, especially of "the charmed circle" of Parisian expatriates. By reprinting the actual words of contemporary writers in excerpts of criticism - the praise, insults, and gossip drawn from journals, letters, diaries, and interviews - this book marks a unique form of literary appreciation and commentary. It is as much biography as critique, a lean reference work that sometimes tells more about the commentators than their subjects." "Among the writers on the writers: Sherwood Anderson, Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, Conrad Aiken, W. H. Auden, John Dos Passos, Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, William Carlos Williams, Wyndham Lewis, Katherine Anne Porter, Allen Tate, Thomas Wolfe, Mary McCarthy, Edmund Wilson, Lillian Ross, and many others." "Hemingway and Faulkner In Their Time has a chronological drift, and is capped by Hemingway's acid observations on Faulkner and vice versa. The narratives of Earl Rovit and Arthur Waldhorn provide the cement that holds this mosaic portrait of the artists - observed and as observers - together."--BOOK JACKET.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 Tim Kendall's study offers the fullest account to date of a tradition of modern English war poetry. Stretching from the Boer War to the present day, it focuses on many of the twentieth-century's finest poets - combatants and non-combatants alike - and considers how they address the ethical challenges of making art out of violence. Poetry, we are often told, makes nothing happen. But war makes poetry happen: the war poet cannot regret, and must exalt at, even the most appalling experiences. Modern English War Poetry not only assesses the problematic relationship between war and its poets, it also encourages an urgent reconsideration of the modern poetry canon and the (too often marginalised) position of war poetry within it. The aesthetic and ethical values on which canonical judgements have been based are carefully scrutinized via a detailed analysis of individual poets. The poets discussed include Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, Wilfred Owen, Charlotte Mew, Edward Thomas, Ivor Gurney, W. H. Auden, Keith Douglas, Ted Hughes, and Geoffrey Hill.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 An overview of the great achievements of modern poets in Britain in the twentieth century. Publisher Summary 2 The last century was characterised by an extraordinary flowering of the art of poetry in Britain. These specially commissioned essays by some of the most highly regarded poetry critics offer an up-to-date, stimulating and reliable overview of English poetry of the twentieth century. The opening section on contexts will both orientate readers relatively new to the field and provide provocative syntheses for those already familiar with it. Following the terms introduced by this section, individual chapters cover many ways of looking at the 'modern', the 'modernist' and the 'postmodern'. The core of the volume is made up of extensive discussions of individual poets, from W. B. Yeats and W. H. Auden to contemporary poets such as Simon Armitage and Carol Ann Duffy. In its coverage of the development, themes and contexts of modern poetry, this Companion is the most useful guide available for students, lecturers and readers.
