Children's Literature Preschool and primary-graders have thefirst-rate "Let's-Read-and-Find-Out" titles to turn to forinformation about their physiological selves. Among them are PaulShowers' Look At Your Eyes, Ears Are For Hearing and Your Skin AndMine. The latter looks at the wonders of this major bodyorgan-pigment, fingerprints, and the sense of touch as well as whatconstitutes skin, and it is all fascinating reading. 1991 (orig.School Library Journal K-Gr 2-- New illustrations and some carefultext revision have given this 1965 basic introduction to the skinand its functions a much needed update. From the cover, which nowfeatures several children frolicking in the water rather than arear view of three shirtless boys, to the highly appealing pagelayouts, this book proves far superior to its predecessor. A tokengirl has been added to the cast of main characters, although she isstill outnumbered, three to one. The four take turns presentingdifferent aspects of the skin, such as pigment and melanin, cutsand healing, fingerprints, and the sense of touch.Ink-and-watercolor illustrations are lively and vibrant, in directcontrast to the former black, white, and gold drawings. Changes inthe text are minimal. More significant is the way in which it hasbeen rearranged. Passages have been moved, regrouped, andelaborated upon, improving the flow of the story line. Page setuphas gone from lines of sentences to paragraphs, resulting in a morereadable style. The book should be given strong consideration aseither a new or replacement copy.-- Denise L.
