简介:Halliday, who is British-born but spent his last years before retirement at the University of Sydney, considers himself a generalist in linguistics, and has published widely on many aspects of the field. The third volume of his collected works presents 18 papers on the place of linguistics as a discipline, linguistics and language, and language as a social semiotic. They originally appeared in professional journals, conference proceedings, and anthologies between 1964 and 2001, but mostly in the 1990s. He himself provides a general introduction, and Webster (Chinese, translation, and linguistics, City U. of Hong Kong) introduces each of the sections. Annotation &
