简介: First published in German in 1938 and later translated into English, this classic of Italian Renaissance historiography centres on the relationship between Florentine art and the conditions under which it was created. In rich detail, Martin Wackernagel explores the impact of patronage and function, widespread demand for art, workshop techniques, and businesses practices on artists' lives and the results they achieved Wackernagel stresses the changing roles of commissions and patrons in the late fourteenth to the early fifteenth centuries, from small-scale enterprise under Lorenzo de Medici to the large-scale development of major Florentine monuments. Through this, he highlights the development of major civic and religious artistic complexes such as the Palazzo Vecchio, the Cathedral and Baptistery, and the convent of Santa Maria Novella. This volume also features a biography of the author and an essay on important later publications related to Wackernagel's themes and arguments.

Purveyors of the new technology, printing, found the pope could drive a hard bargain. Lorenzo de' Medici's possessions included exquisite art and an ostrich egg. This collection of primary documents makes fascinating reading, covering drawing and workplace practice (including linear perspective, sculpture, architecture, panel painting, prints and printmaking), the intellectual state of artists and art education process, the places where art was done and patronized, the influence of class and wealth, and the impact of various markets, including the French royalty and the buyers of icons. 简介:The People's Republic of China's tax policies and international obligations are as multifaceted and dynamic as they are complex, developing closely with the nation's rise to the world's fastest-growing major economy. Today, after decades of reform and the entry into the World Trade Organization, China has developed regulatory systems that enable it to provide stable administration, including a tax structure. China's main tax reform can be attributed to the enactment of the Enterprise Income Tax Law, which came into effect on January 1, 2008. Chinese tax regulations include direct taxes, indirect taxes, other taxes, and custom duties and from a collection point of view, China's tax administration adopts a very devolved system, with revenue collected and shared between different levels of government in accordance with contracts between the different levels of the tax administration system. With respect to international treaties, China has established a network of bilateral tax treaties and regional free trade agreements. This publication describes in detail China's complex tax system and policies, as well as major bilateral treaties in which China has entered into using country-by-country analysis. Lorenzo Riccardi is Tax Advisor and Certified Public Accountant specialized in international taxation. He is based in Shanghai, where he focuses on business and tax law, assisting foreign investments in East Asia. He is an auditor and an advisor for several corporate groups and he is partner and Head of Tax of the consulting firm GWA, specializing in emerging markets.
简介: Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) was the most influential sculptor of his age. Inventive and skilled, he virtually created the Baroque style. In his religious sculptures he excelled at capturing movement and extreme emotion, uniting figures with their setting to create a single conception of overwhelming intensity that expressed the fervour of Counter-Reformation Rome. Intensity and drama also characterize his portraits and world-famous Roman fountains. This monograph provides an authoritative introduction to all aspects of Bernini's sculpture, while the full catalogue gives detailed information on his complete oeuvre.
简介:The competition began with the creation of the doors for the church of St. John the Baptist. Lorenzo Ghiberti, a young, unknown, and inexperienced painter, produced an elegant panel cast almost entirely in a single sheet of bronze. Filippo Brunelleschi, a local goldsmith, designed a far more dramatic and expressive panel that also drew considerable attention. In the end, Ghiberti was chosen tomake the doors. Brunelleschi took a path that led him to rediscover the laws of perspective and reinvent the role of the architect. Fifteen years later, the two artists faced off again in a contest to design the dome of the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. After more than a century of planning and work, the enormous structure was nearing completion, yet a gaping hole lay awaiting the great cupola. It was to be the widest, heaviest, and highest dome ever constructed, and while no one doubted that it could be made, it was unsure who would rise to thechallenge. This time, the wealthy patrons turned to Brunelleschi. His ingenious designs gained him the most important commission in the history of Florence, crowning the cathedral with a dome of such magnificence and beauty that it has become one of the most enduring symbols of theRenaissance. In this lush, imaginative history-a fascinating true story of artistic genius and personal triumph-Paul Robert Walker brings to life two talented, passionate artists and the competitive drive that united and divided them. As it illuminates the drama surrounding the birth of a new artistic vision, the story also explores the lives of other fascinating individuals from Donatello and Masaccio to Cosimo de' Medici and Leon Battista Alberti. The Feud That Sparked the Renaissance offers a glorious tour of fifteenth-century Florence, a bustling city on the verge of greatness, during a time of flourishing creativity. The story begins in the waning days of the fourteenth century, the Trecento, a time when the two masters were young, full of dreams and promise, and Florence herself-already old and storied-stood at a crossroads, not only in Italy but in the history of the western world, a crossroads that could only lead in one oftwo directions: destruction or rebirth.

简介:Angelo Poliziano (1454-1494) was one of the great scholar-poets of the Italian Renaissance and the leading literary figure of the Age of Lorenzo de' Medici, "il Magnifico." His correspondence gives us an intimate glimpse of the revival of classical literature from the pen of a man at the very center of the Renaissance movement. This volume illuminates his close friendship with the philosopher Pico della Mirandola and includes much of the correspondence concerning the composition and reception of his Miscellanies , a revolutionary work of philology. It also includes his famous and moving letter on the death of Lorenzo de' Medici. This volume contains the first modern edition of the Latin text and the first translation of the letters into English.
简介:Widely acknowledged as a prime manifestation of Florentine humanist culture under Lorenzo de'Medici, Botticelli's Primavera cannot be fully interpreted without considering the poetics that expressed the Laurentian cultural program and, in turn, the Renaissance itself. In this analysis Charles Dempsey examines the poetry written by Lorenzo and his literary clients in order to give definition to the cultural context in which the Primavera was created. A celebration of Love, the painting is shown to incorporate both public and private imaginative realms while embracing the ideal and the actual experiences of the present. The Primavera, depicting Venus as the spirit of Love and springtime, is simultaneously old-fashioned and modern, rooted in International-Style vernacular conventions and evincing a nascent classical vocabulary. After describing the profoundly humanist classical foundation of the invention of the Primavera, Dempsey identifies its genre with rustic song, then relates the painting to the conventions of vernacular love poetry. A close reading of the painting in relation to works by Lorenzo, Politian, Pulci, and other poets working to elevate vernacular expression by infusing native Tuscan with Latin forms suggests how the idea of Love portrayed by Botticelli in the form of Venus incorporates not only the ancient springtime renovatio mundi but also the actual cultural renovation--the Renaissance--imagined and sponsored by Lorenzo the Magnificent. -- Publisher description.
简介:"Mesoamerica is one of several cradles of civilization in the world. In this book, Robert M. Rosenswig proposes that we understand Early Formative Mesoamerica as an archipelago of complex societies that interacted with one another over long distances and that were separated by less sedentary peoples. These early "islands" of culture shared an Olmec artistic aesthetic, beginning approximately 1250 BCE (uncalibrated), that first defined Mesoamerica as an area of culture. Rosenswig frames the Olmec world from the perspective of the Soconusco area of Pacific Chiapas and Guatemala. The disagreements about Early Formative society that have raged over the past thirty years focus on the nature of interregional interaction between San Lorenzo and other Early Formative regions. He evaluates these debates from a fresh theoretical perspective and integrates new data into an assessment of Soconusco society before, during and after the apogee of the San Lorenzo polity."--BOOK JACKET.
简介:Michelangelo (1475 - 1564), one of the great artistic figures of the Renaissance, is best known as a sculptor and painter. However he was also an important and highly original architect despite asserting that architecture was not his profession. This comprehensive study examines the complex story of his architectural production from his early works in Rome at the beginning of the 16th - century through to the Florentine period between 1516 and 1534 and finally the major Roman projects from 1534 to 1564. These 31 built and planned projects include his most notable works such as the Laurentian Library at San Lorenzo (1515 - 59), with its tremendous vestibule staircase and St. Peter's Basilica in The Vatican, where he was chief architect from 1546 - 1564, designing the majestic dome that dominates the Rome skyline. These buildings demonstrate Michelangelo's imaginative use of the classical language of architecture to create a new, more unconventional version of his own. Projects are illustrated with many of Michelangelo's annotated sketches, pen-and-ink studies, plans and renderings as well as rich black and white photographs of completed buildings taken by the leading fine art photographer Gabriele Basilico. Essays by authors Giulio Carlo Argan and Bruno Contardi discuss the development of Michelangelo's architectural work including his often difficult relationships with his papal and Medici patrons, and give an insight into Michelangelo's complex architectural legacy.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 With the aid of 184 photographs in black-and-white and color, Boucher (art history, University College, London) discusses the origins of baroque sculpture, portraiture, fountains and garden sculpture, the "bel composto" ("beautiful synthesis," a combination of painting, sculpture, and architecture), reliefs and sculptural altarpieces, ephemeral decorations and small works of art, and the transition from the late baroque period into neoclassicism. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or. Publisher Summary 2 Italian baroque sculpture has enjoyed a controversial reputation, much like that of its chief protagonist, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It has been damned for creating a sham world, distracting the spectator from its spiritual poverty by dazzling technical displays; it has also been condemned as an aberration in taste between the High Renaissance and neo-classicism. Bruce Boucher's text and illustrations offer a fresh view of this rich and varied subject, arguing that Italian baroque sculpture addressed serious issues about art and reality. Baroque sculpture was an art of allegory, one whose visual metaphors were as complex and as stimulating as any metaphysical poem. It was addressed as much to the imagination as to the eye and strove to present the irrational world of saints and mystics in a rational manner. Published to coincide with the four hundredth anniversary of the births of Bernini and Algardi, Italian Baroque Sculptureis the first serious reassessment in English of this major period in European art for more than a generation.

简介:For over a decade, William Lehr, Lorenzo Pupillo, and their colleagues in academia, industry, and policy have been on the electronic frontier, exploring the implications of the technologies that are revolutionizing communication and culture. In 2002, Cyber Policy and Economics in an Internet Age featured essays that focused on such emerging economic and policy-related issues of universal access, appropriate content, spectrum allocation, taxation, consumer protection, and regulation, with respect to the Internet. In this fully revised and updated edition, entitled Internet Policy and Economics: Challenges and Perspectives, the editors and contributors tackle the most current topics and issues, as the Internet continues to permeate all facets of society. New chapters cover dynamics in the developing world, the implications of e-commerce for fiscal policy, and the impact of peer-to-peer networks on music and the arts, as well as debates over intellectual property rights, privacy issues, and cybercrime. Applying insights from economics, political science, law, business, and communications, the book will serve as essential resource for researchers and students, policymakers and regulators, and industry analysts and practitioners.
Applied linear algebra : the decoupling principle / 2nd ed.
作者: Lorenzo Sadun.
简介:"Linear algebra permeates mathematics, as well as physics and engineering. In this text for junior and senior undergraduates, Sadun treats diagonalization as a central tool in solving complicated problems in these subjects by reducing coupled linear evolution problems to a sequence of simpler decoupled problems. This is the Decoupling Principle." "Sadun includes some topics relating to infinite-dimensional spaces. He does not present a generaltheory, but enough so as to apply the decoupling principleto the wave equation, leading to Fourier series and the Fourier transform." "The second edition contains a series of Explorations. Most are numerical labs in which the reader is asked to use standard computer software to look deeper into the subject. Some explorations are theoretical, for instance, relating linear algebra to quantum mechanics. There is also an appendix reviewing basic matrix operations and another with solutions to a third ofthe exercises."--BOOK JACKET.

简介: Book Description Countering the call by some "pro-Lacanians" for an end to the exegesis of Lacan's work--and the dismissal by "anti-Lacanians" of Lacan as impossibly impenetrable--Subjectivity and Otherness argues for Lacan as a "paradoxically systematic" thinker, and for the necessity of a close analysis of his texts. Lorenzo Chiesa examines, from a philosophical perspective, the evolution of the concept of subjectivity in Lacan's work, carrying out a detailed reading of the Lacanian subject in its necessary relation to otherness according to Lacan's orders of the Imaginary, the Symbolic, and the Real. Chiesa emphasizes the continuity underlying apparently incompatible phases of Lacan's examination of the subject, describing Lacan's theory as a consistent philosophical system--but one that is constantly revised and therefore problematic. Chiesa analyzes each "old" theory of the subject within the framework of a "new" elaboration and reassesses its fundamental tenets from the perspective of a general psychoanalytic discourse that becomes increasingly complex. From the 1960s on, writes Chiesa, the Lacanian subject amounts to an irreducible lack that must be actively confronted and assumed; this "subjectivized lack," Chiesa argues further, offers an escape from the contemporary impasse between the "death of the subject" alleged by postmodernism and a return to a traditional "substantialist" notion of the subject. An original treatment of psychoanalytic issues, Subjectivity and Otherness fills a significant gap in the existing literature on Lacan, taking seriously the need for a philosophical investigation of Lacanian concepts. Review "Chiesa reintroduces us to Lacan in the same way Lacan reintroduces us to Freud: setting aside received ideas, false projections, and impressionistic readings, he uncovers what is most basic and original in Lacan's thought while demonstrating conclusively why an engagement with it is indispensable for contemporary philosophy. Not a fly-over summary of the Lacanian corpus, the book manages rather to capture the eventful moments of hesitancy, insight, recasting, in short, the movement of Lacan's thought as it grapples with the critical relation between subjectivity and otherness. This is a dynamic, matchless reading of Lacan that will ignite new interest in his work and rekindle the passions of initiates." -- Joan Copjec, author of Imagine There's No Woman "Distilled from an enviable mastery of the whole of Lacan's oeuvre, Lorenzo Chiesa's book provides an exceptionally clear and well-integrated account of all the central concepts at work in Lacan's notoriously elusive system of thought, organised in terms of its shift in orientation from 'Imaginary' through 'Symbolic' to 'Real'. Rarely have the properly philosophical dimensions of Lacan's anti-philosophy been presented with such assurance and poise; anyone interested in the ongoing re-evaluation of the place of the subject in contemporary continental philosophy will find Subjectivity and Otherness an invaluable and inspiring guide." -- Peter Hallward, Professor of Philosophy, Middlesex University, London, UK "Lorenzo Chiesa has written a philosophical account of Lacan's teaching that is both a superb introduction and a penetrating study of his major contributions, from the initial discovery that the unconscious is structured like a language to a detailed analysis of the subject of jouissance. Newcomers will find a clear, step-by-step exposition of the major themes, while those already familiar with Lacan's contribution to psychoanalysis will find intense stimulation in Chiesa's philosophical engagement with Lacanian thought." -- Russell Grigg, Director, Psychoanalytic Studies and Associate Professor, Philosophy, Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia "With this volume, Lorenzo Chiesa establishes himself as the leader of a new generation of 'young Lacanians', for whom Lacan is primarily a text that needs to be read. Avoiding the need to pledge his doctrinal allegiance to a master, and refusing the endless regurgitation of mantras, Chiesa ploughs through the Lacanian territory with a razor-sharp intellect, constantly unearthing original themes and motifs, and weaving patterns of thought into an intellectual system that proves to be everything but systematic and, for that matter, all the more convincing. Chiesa reads Lacan philosophically, not just insofar as he short-circuits psychoanalysis and philosophy, but also insofar as he approaches the dense text with extreme care and conscientiousness. I don't think Lacan has ever been read with so much patience and exactitude, and had this book been produced during Lacan's lifetime, there is no doubt that he would have recommended it to his audience as a brilliant example of critical reading." -- Dany Nobus, Professor of Psychology and Psychoanalysis, Brunel University, UK
