Introductory econometrics : using Monte Carlo simulation with Microsoft Excel /
Humberto Barreto, Frank M. Howland.
简介:This highly accessible and innovative text and accompanying CD-ROM use Excel (R) workbooks powered by Visual Basic macros to teach the core concepts of econometrics without advanced mathematics. It enables students to run Monte Carlo simulations in order to understand the data generating process and sampling distribution. Intelligent repetition of concrete examples effectively conveys the properties of the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimator and the nature of heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation. Coverage includes omitted variables, binary response models, basic time series, and simultaneous equations. The authors teach students how to construct their own real-world data sets drawn from the internet, which they can analyze with Excel (R) or with other econometric software. The Excel add-ins allow students to draw histograms, to compute P-values and robust standard errors, and to construct their own MonteCarlo and bootstrap simulations.
Study in philosophy and faith:Kierkegaard and Socrates

From Publishers WeeklyNeuroscientist and debut novelist Genova mines years of experience in her field to craft a realistic portrait of early onset Alzheimer's disease. Alice Howland has a career not unlike Genova's—she's an esteemed psychology professor at Harvard, living a comfortable life in Cambridge with her husband, John, arguing about the usual (making quality time together, their daughter's move to L.A.) when the first symptoms of Alzheimer's begin to emerge. First, Alice can't find her Blackberry, then she becomes hopelessly disoriented in her own town. Alice is shocked to be diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's (she had suspected a brain tumor or menopause), after which her life begins steadily to unravel. She loses track of rooms in her home, resigns from Harvard and eventually cannot recognize her own children. The brutal facts of Alzheimer's are heartbreaking, and it's impossible not to feel for Alice and her loved ones, but Genova's prose style is clumsy and her dialogue heavy-handed. This novel will appeal to those dealing with the disease and may prove helpful, but beyond the heartbreaking record of illness there's little here to remember.(Jan.)

Alice Howland is proud ofthe life she worked so hard to build. At fifty years old, she’s a cognitivepsychology professor at Harvard and a world-renowned expert in linguistics witha successful husband and three grown children. When she becomes increasinglydisoriented and forgetful, a tragic diagnosis changes her life—and herrelationship with her family and the world—forever.
At once beautiful andterrifying, Still Alice is a moving and vivid depiction of life withearly-onset Alzheimer’s disease that is as compelling as A Beautiful Mind and as unforgettable as Ordinary People.
简介:The mystery is how a 19th-century Dane devoted to promoting Christian faith felt himself to be the soul-mate of a pagan Athenian who lived and died for philosophy a long time ago. Howland (philosophy, U. of Tulsa) explores the relationship between philosophy and faith in the thought of Johannes Climacus, a pseudonym for Danish philosopher S酶ren Kierkegaard (1813-55), primarily as set out in the slender Philosophical Fragments. When Amelia Earhart disappeared on July 2, 1937, she was flying the longest leg of her around-the-world flight and was only days away from completing her journey. Her plane was never found, and for more than sixty years rumors have persisted about what happened to her. Now, with the recent discovery of long-lost radio messages from Earhart's final flight, we can say with confidence that she ran out of gas just short of her destination of Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean. From the beginning of her flight, a series of tragic circumstances all but doomed her and her navigator, Fred Noonan. Authors Elgen M. and Marie K. Long spent more than twenty-five years researching the mystery surrounding Earhart's final flight before finally determining what happened. They traveled over one hundred thousand miles to interview more than one hundred people who knew some part of the Earhart story. They draw on authoritative sources to take us inside the cockpit of the Electra plane that Earhart flew and recreate the final flight itself. Because Elgen Long began his own flying career not long after Earhart's disappearance, he can describe the equipment and conditions of the time with a vivid first-hand accuracy. As a result, this book brings to life the primitive conditions under which Earhart flew, in an era before radar, with unreliable communications, grass landing strips, and poorly mapped islands. Amelia Earhart: The Mystery Solved does more than just answer the question, What happened to Amelia Earhart? It reminds us how daring early aviators such as Earhart were as they risked their lives to push the technology of the day to its limits -- and beyond.

Alice Howland is a fifty-year-old cognitive psychologyprofessor at Harvard, and a world-renowned expert in linguistics, with grown children and a satisfying marriage, when she starts toexperience fleeting forgetfulness and disorientation. She initiallyattributes these episodes to normal aging or menopause. But as hersymptoms worsen, she sees a neurologist and is given the diagnosisthat will change her life forever: early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease. With no cure or treatment, Alice struggles to find meaning andpurpose in her life as her sense of self is gradually strippedaway, leaving her unable to continue in her profession, take careof herself, recognize her loved ones or even understand that shehas a neurodegenerative disease. Without memory or hope, Alice isforced to live in the moment, which is in turns beautiful, terrifying, and maddening. Genova uses the successful, articulateand independent Alice as the perfect vehicle to capture what itfeels like to literally lose your mind. This novel will touch andinspire you. You will admire Alice’s strength and resourcefulnessas much as cry over her losses. And it will bring new understandingfor all those affected by this terrible neurological disease.
Now comes an in-depth cultural history of the phonograph in the United States from 1890 to 1945. William Howland Kenney offers a full account of what he calls "the 78 r.p.m. era" - from the formative early decades in which the giants of the record industry reigned supreme in the absence of radio, to the postwar proliferation of independent labels, disk jockeys, and changes in popular taste and opinion. By examining the interplay between recorded music and the key social, political, and economic forces in America during the phonograph's rise and fall as the dominant medium of popular recorded sound, he addresses such vital issues as the place of multiculturalism in the phonograph's history, the roles of women as record-player listeners and performers, the belated commercial legitimacy of rhythm-and-blues recordings, the "hit record" phenomenon in the wake of the Great Depression, the origins of the rock-and-roll revolution, and the shifting place of popular recorded music in America's personal and cultural memories." "Students and scholars of American music, culture, commerce, and history - as well as fans and collectors interested in this phase of our nation's rich artistic past - will find a great deal of thorough research and fresh scholarship to enjoy in these pages."--BOOK JACKET.
Dialogue on the conflict between religious fundamentalismand women's rights is often stymied by an 'all or nothing'approach: fundamentalists claim of absolute religious freedom, while some feminists dismiss religion entirely asbeing so imbued with patriarchy as to be eternally opposedto women's rights. This ignores, though, the experiences of religious women who suffer under fundamentalism and fight to resist it, perceiving themselves to be at once religious and feminist. In Religious Fundamentalisms and the Human Rights of Women, Howland provides a forum for these different scholars, both religious and nonreligious,to meet and seek common ground in their fight against fundamentalism. Through an examination of international human rights, national law, grass roots activism, and theology, this volume explores the acute problems that contemporary fundamentalist movements pose for women's equality and liberty rights." -- BOOK JACKET
This innovative study sees the relationship between Athens and Jerusalem through the lens of the Platonic dialogues and the Talmud. Howland argues that these texts are animated by comparable conceptions of the proper roles of inquiry and reasoned debate in religious life, and by a profound awareness of the limits of our understanding of things divine. Insightful readings of Plato's Apology, Euthyphro, and chapter three of tractate Ta驶anit explore the relationship of prophets and philosophers, fathers and sons, and gods and men (among other themes), bringing to light the tension between rational inquiry and faith that is essential to the speeches and deeds of both Socrates and the Talmudic sages. In reflecting on the pedagogy of these texts, Howland shows in detail how Talmudic aggadah and Platonic drama and narrative speak to different sorts of readers in seeking mimetically to convey the living ethos of rabbinic Judaism and Socratic philosophizing"--
