简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 Addresses the work of women playwrights in Britain throughout the twentieth century. Publisher Summary 2 This Companion addresses the work of women playwrights in Britain throughout the twentieth century. Chapters explore the historical and theatrical contexts in which women have written for the theater and examine the work of individual playwrights such as Caryl Churchill, Pam Gems, and Timberlake Wertenbaker. The volume brings together a transatlantic team of feminist theater scholars and practitioners. A chronological section on playwriting from the 1920s to the 1970s is followed by chapters that raise issues of nationality and identity. Later sections question accepted notions of the canon and include chapters on nonmainstream writing, including black and lesbian performance.

Summary: Publisher Summary 1 As an academic discipline built upon Enlightenment thought and a cosmopolitan worldview鈥攏ot grounded in the literary tradition of any single language or nation鈥攃omparative literature has benefited from regular reexamination of its basic principles and practices. The American Comparative Literature Association 1993 report on the state of the discipline, prepared under the leadership of Charles Bernheimer, focused on the influence of multiculturalism as a concept transforming literary and cultural studies. That report and the vigorous responses it generated, published together as Comparative Literature in the Age of Multiculturalism, offered a comprehensive survey of comparative criticism in the 1990s.In the first decade of the twenty-first century, globalization has emerged as a defining paradigm in nearly every area of human activity. This latest report from the ACLA demonstrates that comparative critical strategies today can provide unique insights into the world's changing鈥攁nd, increasingly, colliding鈥攃ultures. Incorporating an even wider range of voices than had its predecessor, the report examines how the condition (or myth) of globalization in all its modes and moods, affirms or undercuts the intuitions of comparative literature; how world literatures whether seen as utopian project or as classroom practice, intersect with the canons and interpretive styles of national literatures, and how material conditions of practice such as language, media, history, gender, and culture appear under the conditions of the present moment.Responding to the frequent attacks against contemporary literary studies, Comparative Literature in an Age of Globalizationestablishes the continuing vitality of the discipline and its rigorous intellectual engagement with the issues facing today's global society.Contributors: Emily Apter, Christopher Braider, Marshall Brown, Jonathan Culler, David Damrosch, Caroline Eckhardt, Caryl Emerson, David Ferris, Gail Finney, Roland Greene, Linda Hutcheon, Djelal Kadir, Fran莽oise Lionnet, Fedwa Malti-Douglas, Richard Rorty, Haun Saussy, Katie Trumpener, Steven Ungar, Zhang Longxi

简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 This interdisciplinary volume of collected, mostly unpublished essays demonstrates how Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of dialogic meaning--and its subsequent elaborations--have influenced a wide range of critical discourses. With essays by Michael Holquist, Jerome J. McGann, John Searle, Deborah Tannen, Gary Saul Morson, Caryl Emerson, Shirley Brice Heath, Don H. Bialostosky, Paul Friedrich, Timothy Austin, John Farrell, Rachel May, and Michael Macovski, the collection explores dialogue not only as an exchange among intratextual voices, but as an extratextual interplay of historical influences, oral forms, and cultural heuristics as well. Such approaches extend the implications of dialogue beyond the boundaries of literary theory, to anthropology, philosophy, linguistics, and cultural studies. The essays address such issues as the establishment and exercise of political power, the relation between conversational and literary discourse, the historical development of the essay, and the idea of literature as social action. Taken together, the essays argue for a redefinition of literary meaning--one that is communal, interactive, and vocatively created. They demonstrate that literary meaning is not rendered by a single narrator, nor even by a solitary author--but is incrementally exchanged and constructed.

Publisher Summary 2 Working through a generational mix of writers, from Sarah Kane, the iconoclastic "bad girl" of the stage, to the "canonical" Caryl Churchill, Elaine Aston charts the significant political and aesthetic changes in women's playwriting at the end of the twentieth century. 简介: For the first time, the literary potential of trauma is examined in this book, bringing trauma theory and literary texts together. Trauma Fictionfocuses on the ways in which contemporary novelists explore the theme of trauma and incorporate it into their writing. It provides innovative readings of texts by Pat Barker, Jackie Kay, Anne Michaels, Toni Morrison, Caryl Phillips, W. G. Sebald and Binjamin Wilkomirski. By identifying the key stylistic features associated with the genre this book considers the ways in which trauma has affected fictional form and explores how novelists respond to the challenge of writing traumatic narratives. Trauma Fictionintroduces the reader to key critics in the field of trauma theory such as Cathy Caruth, Shoshana Felman and Geoffrey Hartman. Linking trauma theory and literary texts points to previously overlooked connections and sheds light on works of contemporary fiction. The distinction between literary theme and style opens up inquiries into the nature of trauma itself. Trauma, like the novels discussed, is shown to take an uncertain but productive place between content and form. Key Features * Idenitifies and explores a new and evolving genre in contemporary fiction * Thinks through the relation between trauma and literature * Produces innovative readings of key works of contemporary fiction * Provides an introduction to central ideas in trauma theory
简介:Caryl Churchill's plays are internationally performed, studied and acclaimed by practitioners, theatre scholars, critics and audiences alike. With fierce imagination the plays dramatise the anxieties and terrors of contemporary life. This Companion presents new scholarship on Churchill's extraordinary and ground-breaking work. Chapters explore a cluster of major plays in relation to pressing social topics - ecological crisis, sexual politics, revolution, terror and selfhood - providing close readings of texts in their theatrical, theoretical and historical contexts. These topic-based essays are intercalated with other essays that delve into Churchill's major collaborations, her performance innovations and her influences on a new generation of playwrights. Contributors explore Churchill's career-long experimentation - her risk-taking that has reinvigorated the stage, both formally and politically. Providing a new critical platform for the study of a theatrical career that spans almost fifty years, the Companion pays fresh attention to Churchill's poetic precision, dark wit and inexhaustible creativity.
简介:In our current world, questions of the transnational, location, land, and identity confront us with a particular insistence. The Grammar of Identity is a lively and wide-ranging study of twentieth-century fiction that examines how writers across nearly a hundred years have confronted these issues. Circumventing the divisions of conventional categories, the book examines writers from both the colonial and postcolonial, the modern and postmodern eras, putting together writers who might not normally inhabit the same critical space: Joseph Conrad, Caryl Phillips, Salman Rushdie, Charlotte Bronte, Jean Rhys, Anne Michaels, W. G. Sebald, Nadine Gordimer, and J. M. Coetzee. In this guise, the book itself becomes a journey of discovery, exploring the transnational not so much as a literal crossing of boundaries but as a way of being and seeing. In fictional terms this also means that it concerns a set of related forms: ways of approaching time and space; constructions of the self by way of combination and constellation; versions of navigation that at once have to do with the foundations of language as well as our pathways through the world. From Conrad's waterways of the earth, to Sebald's endless horizons of connection and accountability, to Gordimer's and Coetzee's meditations on the key sites of village, Empire, and desert, the book recovers the centrality of fiction to our understanding of the world. At the heart of it all is the grammar of identity, how we assemble and undertake our versions of self at the core of our forms of being and seeing.
简介:The social development approach seeks to integrate economic and social policies within a dynamic development process in order to achieve social welfare objectives. This first comprehensive textbook on the subject demonstrates that social development offers critically significant insights for the developed as well as the developing world. James Midgley describes the social development approach, traces its origins in the developing countries, reviews theoretical issues in the field and analyzes different strategies in social development. By adding the developmental dimension, social development is shown to transcend the dichotomy between the residualist approach, which concentrates on targeting resources to the most needy, and the institutional approach which urges extensive state involvement in welfare. The final chapter offers an institution-based synthesis in which governments coordinate market, community and state-sponsored development efforts to promote welfare for all. This incisive and accessible treatment of this important topic will be essential reading for all students in social policy, social work, development studies and public administration. `James Midgley has produced a comprehensive and much needed account of the theory and practice of social development. His many years of experience in the social development field... offers an integrated discussion which cuts across the international divide' - Anthony Hall, London School of Economics and Political Science `Among those committed to social development, none is better equipped than Jim Midgley to provide us with the first introductory text on the subject. Bringing his considerable scholarship to bear on social development issues, he presents a unique and knowledgeable perspective ' - Caryl Abrahams, University of Calgary `This book is the first of its kind, providing a comprehensive, incisive and refreshing analysis of social development and its contribution to the realisation of welfare objectives' - Edwell Kaseke, School of Social Work, Zimbabwe `In elucidating the meaning of social development, Professor Midgley expands considerably current thinking about the welfare state. His synthesis provides students and scholars with the most useful discussion of social development in the literature to date' - Harry Specht, University of California, Berkeley

简介:Q: How many female CEOs does it take to break the glass ceiling? A: That''s the wrong question! Numbers alone simply don''t tell the real story of how women are doing in today''s corporate world. Success on Our Own Terms does. It''s filled with real stories — stories of ordinary women who are making an extraordinary difference in the way corporations work. Success on Our Own Terms features women of different ages, ethnic backgrounds, and educational levels. Their combined experiences offer a fascinating portrait of how the corporate landscape has changed for women over the last few decades. This book is filled with the wisdom of these experiences, from important lessons on navigating corporate corridors and influencing the system to juggling work and personal life, helping local communities, and much more. Exploring the multidimensional definition of success shared by these women, this book reveals how they are working hard to reach their goals, balance their lives, and make a positive contribution to society. It shows how they —and others like them —are transforming the organization from the inside out through their own unique management style, values, vision, and determination. By designing, achieving, and owning their success, women are exploding conventional definitions of their progress in the workplace. The female voices in Success on Our Own Terms inform, encourage, and inspire us all. "Wonderful, timely, and absolutely refreshing. There was a wolf called Wilson
Who never brushed his hair.
He never washed his paws or face
Or changed his underwear.
Will anyone be able to persuade Whiffy Wilson to change his grotty ways for something far less stinky? Peew! Let's hope so.
A fantastically funny verse from the brilliant Caryl Hart, with grubby-but-great illustrations from the hugely talented illustrator of The Dirty Great Dinosaur.
