简介：VOA （美国之音）是世界上最大的新闻广播机构之一，它的英语节目就是一部“活的教科书”，是我们不可多得的有声资料。VOA英语广播采用的是美国普通话（General American）。我们国家每年举行的大学英语四、六级考试听力部分大都采用美语。我国留美人员必须通过的TOEFL及晋升职称必须通过的WSK考试，听力部分也是采用这种语音语调。据我们了解，能在考试中取得理想成绩者大多数都坚持收听VOA英语广播。因此，听VOA英语广播是提高英语听力的重要途径之一。 VOA 特别英语(或慢速英语)节目是专为母语非英语，但具有一定英语基础的人设立的简易规范的英语广播节目。节目的语言简明、易懂、灵活、生动，其特点是语速慢，用词浅显，句子简短明晰, 词汇量控制在美国人最常用的1 500个单词，播放速度为每分钟90个单词, 适合循序渐进的学习规律，但信息量不减。 通过VOA特别英语新闻的听力实践，听者不仅能了解到当今世界上的一些最新热点新闻，还能熟悉美国英语的语音、语调，掌握其语言特点，培养准确连贯的英语语感，学到地道的英语语言，扩大知识面，增加词汇量，为进一步听懂VOA标准英语新闻打下扎实的基础。 为了帮助高校本科生、研究生以及英语爱好者更好地收听VOA特别英语新闻节目，我们编写了《VOA特别英语新闻》系列丛书。本册配有两盘直接录自美国之音广播的磁带，音质清晰。本书收集了116则最新热点新闻，并配有练习，形式有问答题（questions and answers）、填空题（fill in the blanks）、是非题 (true or false)等。 在本书的编写过程中，厦门大学外文学院的张碧桂老师，以及 Karen女士提出了宝贵的意见, Bonnie 女士做了题头录音, 我们在此表示衷心的感谢。 由于水平有限，时间仓促，书中难免存在不妥和错误之处，敬请读者批评指正。

简介：The calculator is required - it is not optional. Calculator instruction is keyed to the TI-83 - TI 86. The approach throughout the text is fourfold: NUMERICAL, specifically through the use of tables; GRAPHICAL, done both on graph paper and with the graphing calculator, also providing the student with opportunities to model data and to interpret models; SYMBOLIC, which helps the student link the numerical and graphical; and finally VERBAL, where students are required to express mathematical concepts in their own words.
