Tadao Ando : the colours of light / Miniature ed.
Richard Pare.
Tadao Ando: The Colours of Light is the result of ten years' collaboration between the English photographer Richard Pare and Japan's leading architect, Tadao Ando (b. 1941). This book includes twenty-seven of Ando's buildings, completed over the last fifteen years, including the notable Kidosaki House, Tokyo, 1986, the Church on the Water, Hokkaido, 1988 and the Meditation Space for Unesco, Paris, 1995.Richard Pare's images break with previous conventions of architectural representation; he distils the 'essence' of Ando's buildings rather than producing literal portraits, and concentrates on the subtle effects of natural light on architecture. The photographic portfolio is complemented by an introductory essay by Tom Heneghan and drawings by Tadao Ando accompany each project description. The Colours of Light was first published in 1996 to critical acclaim, and now for the first time it is available as a miniature edition.
Plant nutrition for sustainable food production and environment : proceedings of the XIII Interna...

The minimalist concrete architecture of Tadao Ando has roots both in Japanese traditions and in Western architecture. This book begins with both contexts: it explores how Ando unites Japanese tradition with a contemporary Western architectural idiom. By analyzing systematically and chronologically the roots and sources that have influenced the thinking of the Pritzker Prizea "winning architect, the author communicates the principles and constants to which Andoa (TM)s buildings can be traced back, and at the same time he places them in the appropriate context within the architecta (TM)s characteristic ideas and intentions. Yann Nussaume teaches at the Ecole Nationale SupA(c)rieure da (TM)architecture in Paris and is the author of numerous publications on Japanese and Chinese architecture.
Tadao Ando at Naoshima: Art, Architecture, Nature showcases the latest work in an on-going process of building by Tadao Ando at the acclaimed Naoshima Island Art Complex. Featured here is Ando's recently completed Chichu Art Museum, an underground facility built on the small island in the Inland Sea of Japan. With respect for the landscape and the traditional use of the land as terraced salt fields, Ando was here determined to utterly adapt architecture to the topography, burying much of the complex volume below the ground. He was moved to fully explore the potential of "underground architecture," which imposes its own order and sensibility on space, allowing in only limited light while increasing a sense of depth, fostering ultimately cool tranquility in which one becomes enfolded. On permanent exhibit in the museum, and shown here, is an important body of work by impressionist Claude Monet as well as other major works by contemporary artists Walter De Maria and James Turrell."--BOOK JACKET.

The term Minimalism has not always been used in a favorable sense, especially in architecture, and even today it may be the cause of some confusion and ambiguity. The problem comes from the word#146;s use in defining a creative current, school or trend when in fact it refers to an aesthetic. At the same time, this aesthetic is not chronologically well defined either and, moreover, interacts with different disciplines. This explains why we find minimalist buildings in periods very far apart from each other and in architects as different as Tadao Ando, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Jacques Herzog & Pierre de Meuron or Luis Barrag#225;n, among others. Minimalism DesignSourceinvestigates the minimalism movement, covering the last years of the decade of the 1990s and the first years of the twenty-first century to inquires into the origins of the term minimalism and in how the minimalism phenomenon played out in other fields like art, painting, fashion, and sculpture has affected minimalism in architecture, define the result of the use of pure and simple lines, the reduction of language elements and, as far as architecture is concerned, the investigation of the treatment of space and of building possibilities.

Turning the world green. The architecture of the great outdoors. One of the hottest areas of contemporary design is clearly landscape architecture. No matter what the architectural style of the moment, the green areas around houses, stadiums or corporate headquarters have taken on a considerable importance, all the more so with the emphasis on ecology and green design. This book calls on the work of the top designers of the moment, from Ken Smith, author of the "Museum of Modern Art's" rooftop garden to West8 from Rotterdam, but also on architects ranging from Foreign Office to Tadao Ando who have long been fascinated by the environments of their buildings. There are new names like the Lebanese landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic and well-known ones like Martha Schwartz. There are established firms like the Wirtz family from Belgium or Gustafson Porter from the United States and young creators like Sophie Agata Ambroise from Lugano. The limit between architecture and landscape architecture is not always easy to define, but this new book opens the doors and windows of today's architecture into the gardens of tomorrow. Featured architects and practices include: AECOM, Tadao Ando, Balmori Associates, Patrick Blanc, Caffarena, Cobos et al, Cervino Lopez, Vladimir Djurovic, DSR, Peter Eisenman, EMBT, James Corner Field, Glavovic Studio, Carrilho da Graca, Gustaffson Guthrie, Gustaffson Porter, Zaha Hadid, Herzog & de Meuron, Steven Holl, Martin Hurtado, Raymond Jungles, Maya Lin, LRO, Giovanni Maciocco, Michael Maltzan, Mecanoo, Fernando Menis, Eduardo de Miguel, Catherine Mosbach, Sotoji Nakamura, Victor Neves, NGBM, Nieto Sobejano, Officina del Paesaggio, Okra, John Pawson, Renzo Piano, Palerm Tabares, Masuno Shunmyo, Ken Smith, Taylor Cullity Lethlean, Michael van Valkenburgh, Weiss Manfredi, West8, and Wirtz International, Work AC.

简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 Of the new generation of architects practicing today in Britain under the rubric neo-minimalists, none has a higher critical reputation than David Chipperfield. As his fame and commissions have grown worldwide, Chipperfield now find himself in the circle of elite architects, including Tadao Ando and Peter Zumthor, whose reputations have been built on an architecture of spare sensuousness. Chipperfields London-based practice has recently garnered a large number of prestigious projects, among them the reconstruction of the Neues Museum and master plan of the Museum Island in Berlin. His River and Rowing museum on the Thames has been hailed as a minor masterpiece, a match of modern manners and time-honored materials and won the Building of the Year Award from the Royal Fine Art Commission. The projects covered in this large-format, beautifully produced book include: airframe furniture; BFI Film Centre, London; the Figge Arts Center in Davenport, Illinois; the Royal Collections Museum in Madrid; the Toyota Auto building in Kyoto; and the San Michele Cemetery in Venice, among many others. Stunning photographs, and Chipperfields preparatory sketches and countless drawings illustrate this exquisite work.

简介:The subject of architecture for religion continues to fascinate. Houses of God: Religious Architecture for a New Millennium by noted author and architect Michael J. Crosbie, demonstrates an inspiring array of gathering places for worship, collected from the USA and abroad. These projects, illustrated with superb photography and detailed plans, demonstrate how architects and congregations can work together to build places that satisfy often complex cultural and personal needs. There are churches, synagogues and temples by some of the world's leading architects, including Tadao Ando Architect & Associates, Heinz Tesar, Gould Evans and many others.
简介:Tadao Ando, 1995 Pritzker Prize laureate, is probably the most important and influential Japanese architect working today. He is famed for his spare and rigorous compositions and use of materials, notably concrete. In Ando's architecture the experience of space and nature - sunlight, sky and wind - is one of the main themes. Among his best-known buildings are the Wall House, the Rokko Housing Development, the Mount Rokko Chapel and the Museum of Literature in Himeji. This Studio Paperback covers important recent projects and buildings including the Japan Pavilion in Seville and the Vitra Seminar House in Weil/Basel. The author, Masao Furuyama, has worked closely with Tadao Ando on this book.

PAUL GOLDBERGERON THE AGE OF ARCHITECTUREThe Guggenheim Museum Bilbao by Frank Gehry, the CCTV Headquarters by Rem Koolhaas, the Getty Center by Richard Meier, the Times Building by Renzo Piano: Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Paul Goldberger's tenure at "The New Yorker "has documented a captivating era in the world of architecture, one in which larger-than-life buildings, urban schemes, historic preservation battles, and personalities have commanded an international stage. Goldberger's keen observations and sharp wit make him one of the most insightful and passionate architectural voices of our time. In this collection of fifty-seven essays, the critic Tracy Kidder called "America's foremost interpreter of public architecture" ranges from Havana to Beijing, from Chicago to Las Vegas, dissecting everything from skyscrapers by Norman Foster and museums by Tadao Ando to airports, monuments, suburban shopping malls, and white-brick apartment houses. This is a comprehensive account of the best--and the worst--of the "age of architecture." On Norman Foster: Norman Foster is the Mozart of modernism. He is nimble and prolific, and his buildings are marked by lightness and grace. He works very hard, but his designs don't show the effort. He brings an air of unnerving aplomb to everything he creates--from skyscrapers to airports, research laboratories to art galleries, chairs to doorknobs. His ability to produce surprising work that doesn't feel labored must drive his competitors crazy. On the Westin Hotel: The forty-five-story Westin is the most garish tall building that has gone up in New York in as long as I can remember. It is fascinating, if only because it makes Times Square vulgar in a whole new way, extending up into the sky. It is not easy, these days, to go beyond the bounds of taste. If the architects, the Miami-based firm Arquitectonica, had been trying to allude to bad taste, one could perhaps respect what they came up with. But they simply wanted, like most architects today, to entertain us. On Mies van der Rohe: Mies's buildings look like the simplest things you could imagine, yet they are among the richest works of architecture ever created. Modern architecture was supposed to remake the world, and Mies was at the center of the revolution, but he was also a counterrevolutionary who designed beautiful things. His spare, minimalist objects are exquisite. He is the only modernist who created a language that ranks with the architectural languages of the past, and while this has sometimes been troubling for his reputation . . . his architectural forms become more astonishing as time goes on.
New Forms Architecture in the 1990s In the 1990s architecture has evolved considerably despite economic constraints. The new architecture has been guided by the rapid progress of computer assisted design and a newly rediscovered affinity for the arts. Indeed, many architects - from France's Dominique Perrault, creator of the new Bibliothèque Nationale de France, to Japan's Tadao Ando - explain their work in terms of references to minimalism or land art. At the same time art itself has veered towards installations and works which approach architecture. These influences have enriched and diversified contemporary architecture in the developed world. The Author: Philip Jodidio (born 1954) studied art history and economics at Harvard and has been editor-in-chief of the French art magazine "Connaissance des Arts" in Paris since 1980. He has written numerous books and articles on contemporary architecture.
