简介: Some things are funny—jokes, puns, sitcoms, Charlie Chaplin, The Far Side, Malvolio with his yellow garters crossed—but why? Why does humor exist in the first place? Why do we spend so much of our time passing on amusing anecdotes, making wisecracks, watching The Simpsons? In Inside Jokes, Matthew Hurley, Daniel Dennett, and Reginald Adams offer an evolutionary and cognitive perspective. Humor, they propose, evolved out of a computational problem that arose when our long-ago ancestors were furnished with open-ended thinking. Mother Nature—aka natural selection—cannot just order the brain to find and fix all our time-pressured misleaps and near-misses. She has to bribe the brain with pleasure. So we find them funny. This wired-in source of pleasure has been tickled relentlessly by humorists over the centuries, and we have become addicted to the endogenous mind candy that is humor. Hurley, Dennett, and Adams describe the evolutionary reasons for humor and for laughter. They examine why humor is pleasurable and desirable, often sharable, surprising, playful, nonsensical, and insightful. They give an "inside," mechanistic account of the cognitive and emotional apparatus that provides the humor experience, and they use it to explain the wide variety of things that are found to be humorous. They also provide a preliminary sketch of an emotional and computational model of humor, arguing that (Star Trek's Data to the contrary) any truly intelligent computational agent could not be engineered without humor.
简介:This volume is a fitting tribute to one of Australia s most celebrated migration scholars. Russell King, International Journal of Popular Geography International Migration into the 21st Century is most scholarly and original in its contribution to migration and refugee studies. Anthony H. Richmond, Journal of Refugee Studies . . . there is no doubt that the volume will provide interesting reading. The essays highlight not only the increasing complexity of international migration in the twenty-first century but also society s need to respond innovatively and to courageously challenge established social, economic, and political norms. It is the focus on future developments in international migration that makes the volume a valuable contribution to the migration literature. It is also an excellent focus for a volume to honour Reginald Appleyard, who dedicated his entire academic life to our understanding of international migration. Brigitte Waldorf, The Professional Geographer This volume of papers is among the best to appear in the prolific literature on international migration published during the last two decades. It should be of value both to the migration specialist and to readers interested in this increasingly critical area of population research. Michael P. Todaro, Population and Development Review The eminent scholars within this volume take stock of, and look forward to, core issues in the field of migration studies. In my view this is an excellent book. Jeroen Doomernik, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands Reginald Appleyard occupies an eminent position in the field of international migration and development studies. This enlightening volume of essays, in his honour, brings together contributions from a distinguished group of scholars who have known him for many years and hold him in high esteem. Combining judgements and expertise from all fields of the social sciences, this unique book provides a truly inter-disciplinary analysis of one of the most significant emerging problems of the 21st Century. The authors examine different aspects of migration from an international perspective, evaluating the nature and significance of change in the movement of people, and attempting to predict emerging trends in the volume, direction and composition of global migration. The book questions the causes of illegal and refugee migration, the politics of selection and restriction, and the changing determinants of return migration. In particular, the authors emphasise that original approaches and theories are required to study and understand the rapidly changing trends in international migration associated with new technology and globalisation. By addressing issues which are likely to be of growing significance during the 21st century, this thought-provoking book will be of immense value to students, scholars and researchers in the social sciences, and especially the theory and policy of international migration.
Twelve Angry Men 十二怒汉 9780143104407
作者: Reginald
出版社:Penguin 2006年08月
简介:
Reginald Roses landmark American drama was a critically acclaimed teleplay, and went on to become a cinematic masterpiece in 1957 starring Henry Fonda, for which Rose wrote the adaptation. A blistering character study and an examination of the American melting pot and the judicial system that keeps it in check, Twelve Angry Men holds at its core a deeply patriotic belief in the U.S. legal system. The storys focal point, known only as Juror Eight, is at first the sole holdout in an 11-1 guilty vote. Eight sets his sights not on proving the other jurors wrong but rather on getting them to look at the situation in a clear-eyed way not affected by their personal biases. Rose deliberately and carefully peels away the layers of artifice from the men and allows a fuller picture of America, at its best and worst, to form.
