简介: Accessibility is the code word for Phaidon's new 500-page dictionary of American art. The book values images over words, and its longest text is the introduction, which is printed in large, bold face and hardly fills one page. But it does describe the book's mission well: "Each artist is represented by a full-page color plate of a significant work, accompanied by an informative and engaging text that places the artist in the context of contemporary movements and preceding traditions...."--concise and informative. By arranging the artists alphabetically, the editors set up some odd and amusing juxtapositions. For example, the suited subject of an Alice Neel painting appears to speak and gesticulate excitedly about the overstacked cornucopia of Louise Nevelson's crates found on the opposing page. The caption over each work includes four artists' names in bold print that function as hyperlinks of a sort, allowing readers to skip, for example, from Willem de Kooning's Woman I to Jean Michel Basquiat's Skull to Alfred Maurer's cubist-like painting Woman with Curlers. This way, with each visit to the American Art Book, readers can discover and follow countless narratives throughout the three centuries of American art. Filled with large, expertly reproduced images, The American Art Book is, like its cousins The Photo Book and The 20th Century Art Book, a high-quality and surprisingly inexpensive volume that would be a worthy addition to any art lover's library. --Loren E. Baldwin

简介:LE CORBUSIER LE GRANDis the only book you'll ever need on the world's most influential architect. ''He is the Leonardo of our time.'' - Eero Saarinen ''He has provided enough for a whole generation to live on.'' - Walter Gropius ''The world's greatest architect.'' - Oscar Niemeyer ''Without question No. 1.'' - Philip Johnson Le Corbusier (1887-1965) is known as of one of the giants of twentieth-century architecture and design. The Swiss-born, self-named architect was not only the creator of some of the most impressive buildings of the last century, he was also an accomplished painter, sculptor, furniture designer, urbanist, and author. His work and social theories continue to be a dominant force today, and his elegant manner, typified by his iconic round black eyeglasses, is still the signature look for architects around the world. Only a book grand in size could encapsulate such a legendary figure. Phaidon Press is pleased to announce the publication of LE CORBUSIER LE GRAND, a spectacular visual biography of the life and work of the father of Modern architecture. Weighing in at 20 pounds, this massive book is packed with 2,000 images and documents, many rare or previously unpublished. Drawing on an array of archival materials, this sumptuous volume depicts not only the vast and varied output of Le Corbusier, but also the major events, people, and forces that shaped the life of a man who continues to fascinate those in and outside the architectural world. LE CORBUSIER LE GRANDfollows the same dramatically oversized design of the critically acclaimed Andy Warhol Giant Size(Phaidon, 2006). The large format enables the reader to explore in detail a myriad of fascinating photographs, letters, personal correspondence, art works, notes, press clippings, sketches, and ephemera all featured in this one of a kind publication. The rarely seen photographs and correspondence shed new light on Le Corbusier's relationships with Josephine Baker, Eileen Gray, Fernand L??ger, Pablo Picasso, and many others. A separate booklet includes transcriptions and translations (from French to English) of all featured documents. LE CORBUSIER LE GRANDincludes an insightful introductory essay by Jean-Louis Cohen, one of the world's most authoritative architectural historians, and incisive chapter introductions by Tim Benton, a highly regarded Le Corbusier scholar. This luxurious book is a striking addition to any coffee table, making it an extraordinary gift for anyone with an interest in art, architecture, or design.

简介:
Jean-Jacques Sempé is one of the most successful and best-loved cartoonists in the world, best known from his cartoons that have graced the covers and pages of the New Yorker for decades. Sempé has published numerous collections of his work in his native France, but never before have they been translated into English. Phaidon Press is delighted to present the first English translated publication of MIXED MESSAGES by Jean-Jacques Sempé, one of four witty and beautifully illustrated collections from this notorious and widely adored cartoonist.
The most recent collection of Sempé's work, MIXED MESSAGES was originally published in France in 2003. Here Sempé turns his attention to the trappings of modern life, from cell phones to designer water, and revisits some of his favorite subjects, such as struggling artists, a look psychiatrists and unhappy couples. One image portrays two business men in conversation, traveling down a cit street aboard personal scooters, ironically wondering about the kind of society they are leaving to their children. While another image, rendered beautifully in watercolor, mocks New York City's resolute ban of smoking in restaurants; calling on the NYPD to take out a lit cigarette in a vacated French Bistro. Whether he is poking fun at the urbane patrons of fashionable restaurants or the inhabitants of the bucolic countryside, Sempé treats all of his subjects with equal amounts of insight and affection.
Sempé's work, once just the one-of-a-kind illustrations that appeared before our American eyes in delightful yet sporadic moments, can now be brought home as an enchanting part of every family's library. MIXED MESSAGES, just one volume of four, includes more than 100 illustrations, both pen and ink, with captions translated by Anthea Bell. Professionals, children, and adults of any age will fall in love with these charming books.

作者简介:Jean-Jacques Sempé (b. 1932) is one of the most successful cartoonists and illustrators in the world, and still regularly contributes to magazines such as THE NEW YORKER and PARIS MATCH. Born in Bordeaux, Sempé was expelled from school for bad behavior. He enjoyed a variety of jobs, from traveling toothpaste salesman to summer camp worker, before winning an art prize in 1952. Although Sempé was never formally trained as an artist, more than twenty volumes of his drawings have been published, in thirty countries. Sempé also enjoys iconic status with generations of children (and adults) around the world, thanks to his collaboration with writer Rene Goscinny on a classic series of books about a little schoolboy called Nicholas. Phaidon Press published NICHOLAS (Hardback, 2005) to great acclaim last year. Sempé currently resides in France.
Anthea Bell (who with Derek Hockridge, also translated the entire ASTERIX THE GAUL saga comics) translated NICHOLAS into English from the original French. The recipient of a number of translation prizes and awards, among the first Marsh Award for Children's Literature in Translation for Christine Nöstlinger's A DOG'S LIFE (Andersen Press). Bell was selected as the recipient of the 2002 Helen and Kurt Wolff Translator's Prize for her exceptional translation of W.G. Sebald's novel AUSTERLITZ, published Random House. She recently translated the popular books, DRAGON RIDER (2004) and INKHEART (2003), both from Scholastic. Bell currently resides in England.

Sempe: Everything is Complicated 每件事都很复杂
简介:
Jean-Jacques Sempé is one of the most successful and best-loved cartoonists in the world, best known from his cartoons that have graced the covers and pages of the New Yorker for decades. Sempé has published numerous collections of his work in his native France, but never before have they been translated into English. Phaidon Press is delighted to present the first English translated publication of EVERYTHING IS COMPLICATED by Jean-Jacques Sempé, one of four witty and beautifully illustrated collections from this notorious and widely adored cartoonist.
Sempé is equally adept at capturing the little indignities (and triumphs) of everyday life as he is at high farce. EVERYTHING IS COMPLICATED, the second Sempé volume published in France, features some of his favorite subjects, such as hapless tourists, pipe-smoking novelists and unruly schoolchildren, as well as people who choose to express their innermost feelings through the medium of the protest sign. One classic image portrays a family after dinner; the father, still in his work attire (a clown costume) berates his three boys only to find that his tirade and dress leave the boys in hysterics. Another tell-tale cartoon tells of a workers union parading the streets in protest, demanding their rights as written on expressive posters, while one concerned-looking man uses his sign to inquire if anyone in the crowd has lost a glove. These inimitable drawings and watercolors, accompanied by perfectly judged deadpan captions are fresh, engaging and funny.
Sempé's work, once just the one-of-a-kind illustrations that appeared before our American eyes in delightful yet sporadic moments, can now be brought home as an enchanting part of every family's library. EVERYTHING IS COMPLICATED, just one volume of four, includes more than 100 illustrations, both pen and ink, with captions translated by Anthea Bell. Unmonumental:Object in the 21st Cdntury 21世纪纪念碑
作者: Laura
简介:
In a world falling to pieces, a new breed of art objects is capturing its fractured allure in three dimensions. UNMONUMENTAL features recent work by thirty contemporary sculptors at the vanguard of their craft, selected by one of contemporary art's top curatorial teams. The sculptures in UNMONUMENTAL are forerunners in a major new artistic development. They are powerful but patently un-heroic; assembled from bits of the world at large, they are sardonic metaphors for our time. The artists featured in the book range from the just-emerged (Tobias Buche, Claire Fontaine, Gedi Sibony) to the internationally renowned (John Bock, Isa Genzken, Rachel Harrison). UNMONUMENTAL is generously illustrated with large full-color photographs of the works, most of which have never before been published. UNMONUMENTAL was created in conjunction with the inaugural exhibition of the New Museum of Contemporary Art's landmark new building, designed by Seijima + Nishazawa / SANAA, on the Bowery in New York.
