简介：Book Description Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) is the only sculptor who is of equal rank to the French painters of the "Great Generation" from Monet to Cezanne. But while he has been considered an early modernist among sculptors, he drew on a rich variety of artistic traditions, including those of ancient Greece, the Renaissance, Egypt and the Far East. He was the creator of a new form in sculpture, the fragment as a finished work, usually a head or a trunk, sometimes a pair of heads only. Rodin is renowned for his expression of emotion and movement and his use of symbolism and distortion. In 1913 the artist described his pictorial approach to sculpting saying: "I place the model in such a way it stands out against the background and so that the light falls on this profile. 简介：As an intricate association between a fungus and one or more green algae or cyanobacteria, lichens are one of the most successful examples of symbiosis. These fascinating organisms survive extreme desiccation and temperatures. They are adapted to a great variety of habitats, from deserts to intertidal zones, from tropical rain forests to the peaks of the Himalayas and to circumpolar ecosystems. Lichens are extremely efficient accumulators of atmospherically deposited pollutants, and are therefore widely used to monitor environmental pollution. Their wide range of secondary products show pharmaceutically interesting fungicidal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. Lichens are extremely difficult to culture. 简介：In 2004 Ettore Ghibellino published his provocative thesis that Goethe s beloved was not Charlotte von Stein but the Dowager Duchess, Anna Amalia. Ghibellino claimed that Charlotte, the former lady-in-waiting of Anna Amalia, acted as a straw woman and that the many letters, and the love they expressed, were really meant for Anna Amalia herself. Dan Farrelly, who translated Ghibellino s book, has been preoccupied with this thesis since 2005. Here he has undertaken a meticulous re-reading of Goethe s letters to Charlotte von Stein from 1776 to 1786. He analyses the whereabouts of Charlotte and Anna Amalia at any given time, including their journeys, and concludes that Charlotte was the real addressee of the letters.
