The Cambridge Companion to the Sonnet
作者: A. D. Cousins 著
出版社:Cambridge University Press 2011-2-1
简介:Beginning with the early masters of the sonnet form, Dante andPetrarch, the Companion examines the reinvention of the sonnetacross times and cultures, from Europe to America. In doing so, itconsiders sonnets as diverse as those by William Shakespeare,William Wordsworth, George Herbert and e. e. cummings. The chaptersexplore how we think of the sonnet as a 'lyric' and what isinvolved in actually trying to write one. The book includes alively discussion between three distinguished contemporary poets -Paul Muldoon, Jeff Hilson and Meg Tyler - on the experience ofwriting a sonnet, and a chapter which traces the sonnet's diffusionacross manuscript, print, screen and the internet. A fresh andauthoritative overview of this major poetic form, the Companionexpertly guides the reader through the sonnet's history anddevelopment into the global multimedia phenomenon it is today.
作者: Phaidon Press
简介: Accessibility is the code word for Phaidon's new 500-page dictionary of American art. The book values images over words, and its longest text is the introduction, which is printed in large, bold face and hardly fills one page. But it does describe the book's mission well: "Each artist is represented by a full-page color plate of a significant work, accompanied by an informative and engaging text that places the artist in the context of contemporary movements and preceding traditions...."--concise and informative. By arranging the artists alphabetically, the editors set up some odd and amusing juxtapositions. For example, the suited subject of an Alice Neel painting appears to speak and gesticulate excitedly about the overstacked cornucopia of Louise Nevelson's crates found on the opposing page. The caption over each work includes four artists' names in bold print that function as hyperlinks of a sort, allowing readers to skip, for example, from Willem de Kooning's Woman I to Jean Michel Basquiat's Skull to Alfred Maurer's cubist-like painting Woman with Curlers. This way, with each visit to the American Art Book, readers can discover and follow countless narratives throughout the three centuries of American art. Filled with large, expertly reproduced images, The American Art Book is, like its cousins The Photo Book and The 20th Century Art Book, a high-quality and surprisingly inexpensive volume that would be a worthy addition to any art lover's library. --Loren E. Baldwin

简介: 在线阅读本书 James Abbe, a 1920s fashion photographer, and Zoran, the designer whose simple, monochromatic clothes were extremely popular in the 1970s, anchor the 500 entries in this massive encyclopedia of fashion. Each designer, photographer, model, or icon gets a page with a large photo and informative but short caption. This has the wonderful effect of weighting each entry equally, thereby devoting the same amount of space to Charles Revson, creator of the Revlon cosmetics empire and relative makeup newcomer Fran+oois Nars, pioneering clothing designer Mariano Fortuny and contemporary favorite Tom Ford. Clearly, a good set of eyes edited this book. It's a tall order to choose just one image to define the many facets of a designer, model, or photographer. The choices made here are excellent and often surprising. The indomitable Coco Chanel demonstrates the ease of movement her designs afforded women by briskly swinging her arm out to one side, while Kate Moss is shown at the height of her waifdom, likely the mode in which she will best be remembered. Model Linda Evangelista is pictured with curly locks of hair. It's obvious, too, that the editors employed the haphazard juxtaposition created by the alphabetical organization. Facing entries, no matter how seemingly incongruous, are united by a visual theme, to spectacular effect. The ovals made by the either screaming or yawning mouths of Kurt Cobain and his infant daughter are mirrored in a 1937 Jean Cocteau illustration of an Elsa Schiaparelli design. A model in a 1930s outfit by John-Frederics faces a portrait of post-punk design queen Betsey Johnson, whose floral outfit echoes the flowery silhouette behind the model. A troika of Robert Lee Morris bracelets matches the arcs of a bombed-out London building in a 1941 Beaton photo of a Digby Morton design. The vibrant prints of Emilio Pucci and Lilly Pulitzer fall together naturally. The reams of fabulous images and the inventive design alone make The Fashion Book a treat at any cost, but the low price-to-size ratio (like its cousins The Art Book and The Photography Book) makes it a real steal.
简介:An unforgettable novel about finding a lost piece of yourself in someone else. Khaled Hosseini, the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel - And the Mountains Echoed - about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations. In this tale revolving around not just parents and children but brothers and sisters, cousins and caretakers, Hosseini explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honor, and sacrifice for one another; and how often we are surprised by the actions of those closest to us, at the times that matter most. Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe—from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos — the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each turning page.
简介: CHAPTER 1 A LONG-EXPECTED PARTY When Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his eleventy-first birthday with a party of special magnificence, there was much talk and excitement in Hobbiton. Bilbo was very rich and very peculiar, and had been the wonder of the Shire for sixty years, ever since his remarkable disappearance and unexpected return. The riches he had brought back from his travels had now become a local legend, and it was popularly believed, whatever the old folk might say, that the Hill at Bag End was full of tunnels stuffed with treasure. And if that was not enough for fame, there was also his prolonged vigour to marvel at. Time wore on,but it seemed to have little effect on Mr. Baggins. At ninety he was much the same as at fifty. At ninety-nine they began to call him well-preserved; but unchanged would have been nearer the mark. There were some that shook their heads and thought this was too much of a good thing; it seemed unfair that anyone should possess (apparently) perpetual youth as well as (reputedly) inexhaustible wealth. 'It wi]l have to be paid for,' they said. 'It isn't natural, and trouble will come of it!' But so far trouble had not come; and as Mr. Baggins was generous with his money, most people were willing to forgive him his oddities and his good fotune. He remained on visiting terms with his relatives (except, of course, the Sackville-Bagginses), and he had many devoted admirers among the hobbits of poor and unimportant families. But he had no close friends, until some of his younger cousins began to grow up.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 In spring 2000, as the Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor at Yale University, Zaha Hadid led an intense and wildly creative studio on the topic of the contemporary art center. Such centers are proliferating across the United States and around the world; yet their architectural form remains abstract and open-ended, subject to continual reinterpretation. Hadid's studio -- one leader, three studio assistants, twelve students, and numerous critics -- interpreted the contemporary art center as an invitation to experiment with new forms of public space. Specific contemporary works of art became the program for a series of radical architectural concepts that expand the space of the art, taking on the scale and materiality of full-scale architectural constructs. The studio -- and this volume -- was divided into ten segments, addressing such issues as program analysis, spatialities, system conditions, current contemporary art centers, building types, sites, and linearities. Each segment is represented by strikingly original renderings, including many fantastical computer images. The accompanying text is drawn from transcripts of the studio reviews by the prestigious critics: Robert A. M. Stern, dean of the Yale School of Architecture; Terence Riley and Paola Antonelli of the Museum of Modern Art; and architects, critics, and scholars Jeffrey Kipnis, Thomas Krens, Sulan Kolatan, William MacDonald, Fabian Marcaccio, Rebeca Mendez, Paola Sanguinetti, Joseph Giovannini, Marc Cousins, Greg Lynn, and Gail Witwer.

GUIDO MOCAFICO:SERPENS---GUIDO MOCAFICO 作品集
简介:By way of a day job, Guido Mocafico takes pictures for Wallpaper, The Face and French and American Vogue. For years he's also been photographing creepy-crawlies, including spiders, snakes and jellyfish. What animal has inspired as much dread, as many legends, as much revulsion and terror as the snake? Among the 2,700 known species, few are dangerous, let alone lethal, to humans, but prejudices run deep. Cobras, mambas, vipers and their cousins swing languidly from Amazonian canopies, hibernate through harsh Arctic winters, and eat entire cows in one gulp; humans quiver in their boots. Even as some species face the possibility of extinction before we fully understand them, new ones are still being discovered. Mocafico's explorations of their aesthetic properties bring out the singular power and beauty--and ability to unnerve--of the animal that human societies have called demon, divinity, sacred protector and ancestor.
简介:The much-anticipated third book in Paolini's Inheritance Cycle continues to rely heavily on classic fantasy tropes. The novel launches with magician and Dragon Rider Eragon, his cousin Roran and the dragon Saphira on a quest to rescue Roran's betrothed. The cousins soon split up, and Roran undergoes his own series of heroic tests, culminating in a well-choreographed and intense fight against an Urgal (a ram-human hybrid). Eragon, at the same time, encounters treacherous dwarves, undergoes even more training with the elf Oromis and gains a magical sword suitable for a Dragon Rider. The silly revelations about Eragon's background in the previous book, Eldest, are given a new spin near the end, but the change is neither unexpected nor interesting. Predictably, the book concludes with even more character deaths and another battle, but those expecting a resolution will have to wait until the next novel. The cliched journey may appeal to younger readers of genre fiction. Older teens, even those who might have first cut their teeth on Paolini's writing years ago, are less likely to be impressed. 简介:"In this collection of Mexican-American stories, Cisneros addresses the reader in a voice that is alternately buoyant, strong, funny, and sad. The brief vignettes of the opening piece, 鈥橫y Lucy Friend Who Smells Like Corn,鈥?are tiles in a mosaic. Taken together, these vignettes give a vivid, colorful picture of life on the Texas/Mexico border. Family ties are strong: aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents are all present. The stories are often about the romantic dreams of young girls longing to escape stifling small-town life who discover that things are not much different on the other side of the border..."--Library Journal. www.amazon.com.
