The Oxford Companion to English Literature has long been established as the leading reference resource for students, teachers, scholars, and general readers of English literature. It provides unrivalled coverage of all aspects of English literature - from writers, their works, and the historical and cultural context in which they wrote, to critics, literary theory, and allusions." "For the seventh edition, the Companion has been thoroughly revised and updated to meet the needs and concerns of today's students and general readers. Over 1,000 new entries have been added, ranging from new writers - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Patrick Marber, David Mitchell, Arundhati Roy - to increased coverage of writers and literary movements from around the world. Coverage of American literature has been substantially increased, with new entries on writers such as Cormac McCarthy and Amy Tan and on movements and publications. Contextual and historical coverage has also been expanded, with new entries on European history and culture, post-colonial literature, as well as writers and literary movements from around the world that have influenced English literature.". "The Companion has always been a quick and dependable source of reference for students, and the new edition confirms its pre-eminent role as the go-to resource of first choice. All entries have been reviewed, and details of new works, biographies, and criticism have been brought up to date. So also has coverage of the themes, approaches and concepts encountered by students today, from terms to articles on literary theory and theorists. There is increased coverage of writers from around the world, as well as from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, and of contextual topics, including film and television, music, and art. Cross-referencing has been thoroughly updated, with stronger linking from writers to thematic and conceptual entries. Meanwhile coverage of popular genres such as children's literature, science fiction, biography, reportage, crime fiction, fantasy or travel literature has been increased substantially, with new entries on writers from Philip Pullman to Anne Frank and from Anais Nin to Douglas Adams." "The seventh edition of this classic Companion - now under the editorship of Dinah Birch, assisted by a team of 28 distinguished associate editors, and over 150 contributors - ensures that it retains its status as the most authoritative, informative, and accessible guide to literature available."--BOOK JACKET.
简介:How do creative people think? Do great works of the imagination originate in words or in images? Is there a rational explanation for the sudden appearance of geniuses like Mozart or Einstein? Such questions have fascinated people for centuries; only in recent years, however, has cognitive psychology been able to provide some clues to the mysterious process of creativity. In this revised edition of Notebooks of the Mind, Vera John-Steiner combines imaginative insight with scientific precision to produce a startling account of the human mind working at its highest potential. To approach her subject John-Steiner goes directly to the source, assembling the thoughts of "experienced thinkers"--artists, philosophers, writers, and scientists able to reflect on their own imaginative patterns. More than fifty interviews (with figures ranging from Jessica Mitford to Aaron Copland), along with excerpts from the diaries, letters, and autobiographies of such gifted giants as Leo Tolstoy, Marie Curie, and Diego Rivera, among others, provide illuminating insights into creative activity. We read, for example, of Darwin's preoccupation with the image of nature as a branched tree while working on his concept of evolution. Mozart testifies to the vital influence on his mature art of the wondrous "bag of memories" he retained from childhood. Anais Nin describes her sense of words as oppressive, explaining how imagistic free association freed her as a writer. Adding these personal accounts to laboratory studies of thought process, John-Steiner takes a refreshingly holistic approach to the question of creativity. What emerges is an intriguing demonstration of how specific sociocultural circumstances interact with certain personality traits to encourage the creative mind. Among the topics examined here are the importance of childhood mentor figures; the lengthy apprenticeship of the talented person; and the development of self- expression through highly individualistic languages, whether in images, movement or inner speech. Now, with a new introduction, this award-winning book provides an uniquely broad-based study of the origins, development and fruits of human inspiration.
简介:From the beginning of the underground film movement in the U.S. and Europe, through the fringe gay world of the '40s and '50s, to the '60s in London and San Francisco (when Anger was at his peak of fame), to the present, Anger takes the reader on a wild journey tracing the reclusive, countercultural life of America's most innovative and highly regarded underground filmmaker. Known worldwide for his bestselling Hollywood Babylonbooks and his cult film classics Scorpio Rising,Lucifer Risingand Fireworks,Anger's aesthetic vision influenced such directors as Steven Spielberg, Dennis Hopper and Martin Scorcese, and can still be felt years later in contemporary mediums such as rock videos. In this sensational story of one of the century's most creative and controversial iconoclasts, the reader encounters characters as diverse as sexuality expert Dr. Alfred Kinsey, avant-gardists Anais Nin and Marianne Faithfull, rock icons Mick Jagger and Jimmy Page and Bobby Beausoleil, the Manson murderer who was Anger's prot,g, and a star of Lucifer Rising.A powerful and compelling read, Anger is indispensable for film buffs and is sure to appeal to the burgeoning gay market.

This text explores the autobiographical testimonies of six 20th-century women authors whose writings employ narratives of "scriptotherapy" in order to heal the wounds of psychological trauma. This psychoanalytic study focuses on the sexual/textual inscription of traumatic narrative as the focal point of a large body of autobiographical practice representing the genre of narrative recovery. The literary testimonies of Colette, Hilda Doolittle, Anais Nin, Audre Lorde, Janet Frame, and Sylvia Fraser provide evidence of post-traumatic stress disorder precipitated by rape, incest, childhood sexual abuse, unwanted pregnancy, pregnancy loss, or a severe illness that threatens the integrity of the body. The compelling writings produced by these experiences are examined for their patterns of similarity and their points of uniqueness. The book suggests that the powerful medium of written autobiographical testimony may make the resolution or reconfiguration of the most emotionally distressing experiences possible.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 Henke (literary studies, U. of Louisville) explores the autobiographical writings of six 20th-century women authors who experienced life-shattering trauma and used their writings as a means for survival and healing. The literary testimonies of Colette, Hilda Doolittle, Anais Nin, Janet Frame, Audre Lord, and Sylvia Fraser provide evidence of post-traumatic stress; Henke examines their works for their patterns of similarity as well as their uniqueness in order to suggest that written autobiographical testimony may allow for the reconfiguration of emotionally distressing situations. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or. Publisher Summary 2 Judith Herman has noted that "the most common post-traumatic disorders are those not of men in war but of women in civilian life." How have women survived, both individually and collectively, in the face of unimaginable trauma? In this important new book, Suzette Henke finds evidence that women often use writing in order to heal the wounds of psychological trauma. She terms this method "scriptotherapy," the process of writing out and writing through traumatic experience in the mode of therapeutic re-enactment. Shattered Subjectsexplores the autobiographical writings of six 20th-century women authors who experienced life-shattering trauma and used their writings as a means for survival and healing.
