Publisher Summary 1
Norwich City Council accepted a proposal for a shopping center that would make use of the topography of the city the same way Norman conquerors of England had done 900 years earlier; but the pre-requisite was thorough excavation, analysis, and documentation of the site. Amazingly, the excavation project was incorporated into the development project itself, with the archaeological team acting in conjunction with the construction activities. This two-volume report covers the findings of this grand-scale enterprise (unprecedented in size in Norfolk and a match to some of the largest projects anywhere). Initial planning began in the early 1980s, and activity occurred in stages from 1987 through 1998. The excavation and the report are testament to the dedicated efforts of numerous workers, whom Popescu thanks and credits. Volume 1 covers the Anglo-Saxon presence to 1345; volume 2, c.1345 to modern times. Appendices are contained on an included CD-ROM. Distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co.
