For Indian elementary teacher programs, teacher educators, research institutions, and nongovernmental and development organizations in education, literacy, and child development, Batra (education, U. of Delhi, India) presents eight chapters by Indian education, geography, and social science scholars and teachers who describe the teaching, curriculum, and textbooks in social sciences used in the Eklavya program for the state schools of Madhya Pradesh in India. As the books were designed to enable teachers and students to interact on social issues and processes in an active and analytical manner, the book examines this goal, the development of the curriculum, and how subject matter is linked to pedagogy. The review was originally presented at a national seminar by the Maulana Azad Centre for Elementary and Social Education at Delhi U. in December 2001.
