《蜗牛屋》书中的插画具有优雅、温馨的气质与风格。故事的开始,是奶奶在住家的庭院里照顾小孩。她招呼小孩到身旁,开始讲故事。
故事的角色就是奶奶的孙儿——男孩、女孩和小宝宝,十分亲切而生活化。故事的角色小到可以住进蜗牛屋,在视觉上好像用显微镜放大,人物与自然做比例上的对比,产生梦幻的超现实。这样的情况下,显得危机四伏,而发展出很多戏剧的惊险与高潮:一次地震、一次婴儿不见了、一次大鸟来袭,每一次的惊险都制造了紧张与悬疑;故事的设计富有变化且完整。图画书有语文与图画的世界,尤其图画对儿童更有吸引力,份量上也显得比较重要,尤其以文学类来说,更着重欣赏与传达美感,可以说是感性的艺术作品。这本书的图画以淡彩技法,有石刻版画趣味,以纤密的素描,配上柔和的浅色调,风格复古,有传统的英国风,如波特(Potter 1866-1943)等画风,但仔细观察人物与景象,还是现代的,尤其对植物、昆虫精细描绘的技术与用心,都令人赞佩,图画不只精致,更有一份优美、温馨的诗情。
插图以连环图画呈现,依情节发展,时而多幅,时而单张,编排设计有节奏律动的美感。故事依时空发展,由早晨到夜晚,景色、环境的变化与设计也很巧妙。

图画书纵横——从《蜗牛屋》谈起

看到和英出版英国作家艾伦?亚伯格(AllanAhlberg)的图画书新作《蜗牛屋》,不禁松了一口气。不知是出版信息的不足,还是这期间他确实没有图画书作品?这是自从九四年他的创作搭档也是他的画家太太珍妮特.亚伯格(JanetAhlberg)过世后,看到他的唯一新作。
一般读者对他们夫妻也许陌生,不过如果提起正传出版的《快乐邮差过圣诞》,知道的人就多了。这本书平常在书店里看不到,到了十二月圣诞节左右就会上市,这种情形已经很多年了。
艾伦?亚伯格的文字作品除了图画书,还有很多少年小说和诗集。其中以邮差送信并和童话故事主角互动所发展出来的图画书,亚伯格夫妻共创作了三本。第一本名为《TheJolly Postman; or, Other People'sletter》(1986),它是借着送信的邮差,分别造访流传已久的童话故事要角。童话故事的主角们在“从此过着幸福快乐的日子”的结局后,不再石沉大海,已有了新的消息。这书与其说是邮差先生送信给大家熟悉的故事人物,不如说是他为读者捎回来童话故事人物的近况,好像他们至今仍活在某处。
在美国现代版童话名作家JonScieszka(中文版《臭起司小子爆笑故事大集合》作者)和画家Lane Smith这对拍档尚未崛起,他们合作的第一本书《TheTrue Story of The 3 LittlePigs》(1989)尚未问世之际,对岸英国亚伯格夫妻书中,〝灰姑娘和他的夫婿正要搬家,面临出售城堡的境遇〞,以及〝杰克与魔豆树中的巨人居然温柔地怀抱着幼儿〞等等情节,真是震惊了西方图画书界。这本书得到的奖项包括英国的EmilAward、荷兰的Book Key Prize、以及法国的Prix du Livre Pour la Jeunesse 奖。
第二本是《快乐邮差过圣诞》,原名《TheJolly Christmas Postman》(1991),延续第一本的点子,加入了耶诞的气氛。得到英国的格林威大奖(KateGreenaway Medal)。第三本也就是珍妮特.亚伯格最后的作品,名为 《The Jolly PocketPostman》,几年前在书店里看到迭了两尺高,卖六折多,颇为它的不被人知以致如此贱卖遗憾,当时打了许多电话通知同好。此书的邮差因为送信时意外受伤昏迷,书中的童话故事人物,有的出现在他昏迷前与清醒后,有的则是出现在他昏迷的梦境里;而梦境里和童话故事主角们追逐不休的邮差是缩小的,小到这本书还要附赠一只小放大镜。现在,当艾伦.亚伯格遇到一位“对中古世纪的手抄本装饰画作非常感兴趣,尤其是盛行于十六、七世纪的微型画,…”(和英笔记本P.86)并且画风和珍妮特?亚伯格接近的画家吉里安?泰勒(GillianTyler)时,这“缩小”的点子,延续到《蜗牛屋》里,是极其自然的事了。
真实且传神的家庭生活情境
珍妮特?亚伯格的画温和美丽,每个画面都非常生活化,不论室内或室外,放眼望去,所有的房舍、景物与对象好像都该在那儿。举《Peek-A-Boo》一书里的厨房为例:系着围裙的妈妈弯着腰正在倒汤,桌上有切一半的面包、铜钱掉出来的皮包压在报纸上、果酱和杯盘散置着、地板上是玩具和一只鞋、水龙头滴着水、水槽里泡着洗一半的衣物、墙上挂着月历和贴着小孩的画、绿格子窗帘的玻璃窗外是跳绳的女孩……;这些景象钜细靡遗地描绘家中一角,家的感觉既真实且传神。有兴趣做功课的读者如果在有关“家”这个主题的作品中作比较,看不同画家如何以室内摆设与生活物品来传达家庭生活情境,便不难发现珍妮特?亚伯格的突出且予人深刻印象了。书中另一幅公园图,也令人有如置身其中般容易感受愉悦悠闲的气氛,难怪有插画家忍不住要抄它。
《蜗牛屋》的画家吉里安?泰勒和珍妮特?亚伯格的画应该说异中带同;仔细看,吉里安的画用更多细密如针般的线条去处理“面”,对于物象外围的轮廓,她习惯用中断的短曲线去钩。她和珍妮特?亚伯格一样有生活化的布局,一样流露出图画书里的“英国风”(和英笔记本P.79)。
到底什么是图画书里的“英国风”呢?它是一种很容易感受与认同却不一定能说清楚的风格,但只要排开KateGreenaway(1846–1901)、Beatrix Potter(1866–1943)、JanetAhlberg(1944–1994)等人的作品,就可以发现这些英国画家的共同特色︰他们是淡彩的,是田园的、生活的,并且以沾水笔钩着柔和的线条。这些风格延续下来,就连近年的AngelaBarrett、Bernadett Watts、或是《野蔷薇村的故事》的JillBarklem、《小菲菲和新弟弟》、《家》、《小阿力的大学校》等的 Catherine Anholt也有一点味道。
顺手拈来的故事当中……
《蜗牛屋》里的图大大小小不少。如果先只看说故事的奶奶,包括说故事前与说故事后共有十一幅之多;她的左右手搂着两个孙子,旁边的娃娃车里还有一个小婴儿,每个画面都是同样的四个人,依着文字的描述画出:“…奶奶转身帮他把帽子戴好。”“…奶奶顺手挥走一只飞蛾,…”“瓜瓜把厨房的灯打开,奶奶抱着婴儿走了进去。”等姿态与表情。其余大小方格子里的图,有时是一个场景、有时是分解图、有时像连环画,才是故事内容。在同一个跨页里做不同角度的表现,令人想起TomidePaola的《阿利的红斗篷》,它也是在主轴故事进行之外,还有小主题贯穿全书,读者可以注意那只一直出现的黑脸的羊,试着了解它的心情;或者留意每一页忙碌的小老鼠,看它到底在忙些什么。《蜗牛屋》因为是奶奶在说故事给孙子听,故事进展中,时时还要回到奶奶与孙子的对话,加上图画里还有说故事时环境与时光的更迭,连画眉鸟、猫儿等也相左右,显出奶奶说故事的顺手拈来。
《蜗牛屋》里有好多幅主角在花草丛中的图非常漂亮。这种连画家自身也缩小在看周遭的取景方式,在西洋美术名画中也可见到,那就是鲁索(HenriRousseau 1844-1910)的作品。此外,巧的是杨志成(EdYoung)的《但愿我是蝴蝶》、岩村和朗的十四只老鼠系列等书中也有相近的作画角度。在《但愿我是蝴蝶》中,EdYoung用粉彩来画小蟋蟀生活的田园世界,但不若《蜗牛屋》那么细腻写实。虽然两者都在故事背景中凸显自然世界的美妙,《蜗牛屋》着重美丽花草的形态描绘,而《但愿我是蝴蝶》则捕捉绚烂的色泽与斑驳的光影。如果说《蜗牛屋》适合“细细的看”,那么《但愿我是蝴蝶》则适合“远看”;推远了距离,模糊的草丛与树荫、硕大的青蛙与蝴蝶在地上的身影就都清楚明朗了。
珍妮特?亚伯格虽然留下不少作品,她的英年早逝不只是英国,也是世界图画书界的损失。不过我们乐见新人吉里安?泰勒以精湛的画艺成为艾伦?亚伯格的新搭档,期望她创作出更多像《蜗牛屋》一样值得收藏的好作品。

【前言】
近年来,国家对工程硕士研究生的入学考试政策有重大改革。自2016年起,已经举行了13年的研究生入学资格考试(Graduate Candidate Test,GCT)正式画上句号。攻读工程硕士专业学位的研究生都要参加的在职研究生全国联考被取消,所有在职研究生均作为非全日制的分类纳入到国家研究生招生计划,参加全国硕士研究生统一入学考试。此举将显著提高考试难度、学生的入学质量及教学质量,亦将带动在职研究生整体素质的提高。学生水平及素质的提高意味着工程硕士研究生英语教学起点可以提高。在此背景下,我们对2005年出版的《工程硕士研究生英语教程》进行了修订,以便能更好地顺应新形势、新要求下的工程硕士英语教学。
第三版教材以工程硕士研究生目前和将来学习与工作的需要为出发点,按照自主学习和合作学习相结合的原则,在延续第二版教材的实用性、针对性和时代感的基础上,保留了原教材的编写体例及十一个单元,新增了五个单元,并对所有写作方面的内容做了调整和充实。其编写体系及特点如下:
(1) 保留课文之前的Online Warm?up (网络热身)和Lead?in Work (导入活动)两项内容。前者就与课文主题相关的背景知识提问,旨在鼓励学生课前利用网络资源大量浏览,获取、传递、处理及应用与课文主题相关的信息。后者提供与课文主题相关的思考问题、课文语境中重点词汇的练习以及与课文相关的阅读理解练习。这两项活动能有效培养学生的英语阅读、自主学习及批判性思维能力,为学生更好地理解所学课文做好准备。
(2) 课文与练习包括五个方面的内容:①课文、课文难点及专有名词注解、生词及词组的双语解释;②Speaking:采取了cooperative learning, group discussion, face?to?face interaction, role?play等形式给学生提供练习口语的机会,学以致用;③Vocabulary Study:从两个层面的练习来巩固所学的重点词汇;④Cloze:完形填空;⑤Translation:课文中重点段落或主要内容的英汉及汉英互译。该部分融听、说、读、写、译等多项语言技能于一体,综合培养学生的语言应用能力。
(3)Further Reading: 与课文内容相关的阅读文选、生词及词组的双语解释、口语讨论题目及True or False练习。
(4)重新编写了各个单元的写作部分:该部分仍然围绕实用英语写作,以更丰富翔实的介绍、实例与练习来说明应用文体写作。其主要内容有:如何写正式信函、推荐信、求职信、个人简历、邀请信、非正式信函与便条、电子邮件、广告、卡片、标识语、论文摘要、备忘录、商务报告、通知、问卷设计等等,突出了实用性原则。
