简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 In recent years, the idea of multiculturalism has become a powerful鈥攁nd controversial鈥攊nfluence in a variety of social and cultural territories. In the academic world it has profoundly influenced curriculum and scholarship in the humanities, particularly in traditionally Eurocentric disciplines such as comparative literature. It was hardly surprising, then, that the 1993 report "Comparative Literature at the Turn of the Century"鈥攚hich endorses a multicultural orientation for the discipline鈥攇enerated an unprecedented level of interest. The third such report on professional standards issued by the American Comparative Literature Association since 1965, it continues to be the subject of lively discussion and debate. At issue is not only the definition of a discipline but also the cultural function of literary study in general. This book brings together the three ACLA reports (issued in 1965, 1975, and 1993), three responses to the latest report presented at the 1993 MLA convention (by K. Anthony Appiah, Mary Louise Pratt, and Michael Riffaterre), and thirteen additional position papers by prominent scholars in the humanities.Contributors: Ed Ahearn ? K. Anthony Appiah ? Emily Apter ? Charles Bernheimer ? Peter Brooks ? Rey Chow ? Jonathan Culler ? David Damrosch ? Elizabeth Fox-Genovese ? Roland Greene ? Margaret R. Higonnet ? Fran莽oise Lionnet ? Marjorie Perloff ? Mary Russo ? 简介:With an Introduction by Hilary Long Marjorie Bowen (1885-1952) spent the early part of her working life providing for a demanding and ungrateful family. We are lucky that she did so, since among the results were these short stories of rare quality. In their use of dreams, ancient anecdote, and ruined or dilapidated buildings ('Florence Flannery', 'The Fair Hair of Ambrosine') they are at times in the finest tradition of The Castle of Otranto and the Gothic revival which had chilled the blood of 更多>>
简介:"Arly Hanks - the wiliest chief of police in the Ozarks - is back on the case. And this time around, our intrepid sleuth may have met her match: she's just been pressed into service as chaperone for the church youth group. Ten hormonally challenged teenage boys and girls are spending a week at Camp Pearly Gates, accompanied by the formidable wife of the mayor, the high school shop teacher, and preacher Brother Verber. It's bad enough that Arly has to bunk with this crew, but when, on a dark and stormy night, one of the girls stumbles over the body of a white-robed woman with a shaved head, Arly knows things can only go downhill." "Investigating the murder, Chief of Police Hanks finds herself hindered by an eccentric cast of characters, from the bumbling local police and a band of spacey cultists to her own menopausal mother and an oddly intriguing (and attractive) fisherman called Jacko. Meanwhile, back in Maggody, Arkansas (population 755), Mayor Jim Bob Buchanon is up to his usual philandering antics, Raz Buchanon is looking for an animal companion to keep his pig Marjorie company, and Duluth Buchanon's wife has gone missing with their two sons."--BOOK JACKET.
简介:A major contribution to Descartes studies, this book provides a panorama of cutting-edge scholarship ranging widely over Descartes's own primary concerns: metaphysics, physics, and its applications. It is at once a tool for scholars and--steering clear of technical Cartesian science--an accessible resource that will delight nonspecialists. The contributors include Edwin Curley, Willis Doney, Alan Gabbey, Daniel Garber, Marjorie Grene, Gary Hatfield, Marleen Rozemond, John Schuster, Dennis Sepper, Stephen Voss, Stephen Wagner, Margaret Welson, Jean Marie Beyssade, Michelle Beyssade, Michel Henry, Evert van Leeuwen, Jean-Luc Marion, Geneviève Rodis-Lewis, and Jean-Pierre Séris. Combining new textual sensitivity with attentiveness to history, they represent the best established scholars and most exciting new voices, including both English speaking and newly-translated writers. Part I examines the foundations of Descartes's philosophy: Cartesian certainty; the phenomenology of the cogitoand its modulations in the passions; and the defensibility and comprehensibility of the Cartesian God. The second part examines Descartes's groundbreaking metaphysics: mind's distinctness from and interaction with body; imagination; perception; and language. Part III examines Cartesian science: the revolutionary rhetoric of the Rulesand the Discourse; the metaphysical foundations of physics; the interplay of rationalism and empiricism; the mechanics and human biology that flow from Descartes's physics.

简介:The smoky scent of the past lingers in this confident second novel, set on Washington''s Olympic Peninsula and infused with the deep-forest spirit of the Pacific Northwest. Returning to the logging town of Misp after her failed marriage, 30ish Jessica Moran, the daughter of a mill owner, starts a window-cleaning company and devotes herself to her brother Jonah, a gentle misfit afflicted with Asperger''s syndrome (an disease like autism) and obsessed with the Civil War. If it weren''t for Jonah, Jessica might never communicate with her formidable mother, Lila, who is now head of the family business, since she is convinced that Lila was responsible for Jessica''s father''s death by drowning nearly 20 years before. Only after a fire consumes Misp''s new halfway house for Seattle convicts, leaving evidence of Jonah''s presence at the scene, is the smoldering legacy of that long-ago summer fully reawakened. The investigator for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is none other than Quinault Indian lawyer Callum Luke, Jessica''s childhood sweetheart, and as Jessica and Callum look for the cause of the fire, they revisit the fraught period after Jessica''s father''s death and the sudden ending of their relationship. Their fears, the town''s bigotry, the truths they did not wish to face are all aired as the current crime is solved. Reynolds (The Starlite Drive-in) once again proves herself a sure-handed storyteller, alternating Jessica''s coming-of-age memories with the criminal investigation and unraveling the Moran family''s painful history in deft measures. But her prose really soars when she describes the timberlandAa tent in the woods, the bottom of an overgrown lake, a drive over remote roads during a stormAcapturing the almost magical spiritual connection between people and the land. Agent, Angela Rinaldi. Regional author tour. (Nov.) 作者简介: MARJORIE REYNOLDS is the author of The Starlite Drive-in A former newspaper reporter and movie advertising executive, she lives with her husband and som on Mercer Island,Washington.

简介:"The essays in this volume are powerful, plainspoken meditations on birthing, dying, and all the business in between," writes Lauren Slater in her introduction to the 2006 edition. "They reflect the best of what we, as a singular species, have to offer, which is reflection in a context of kindness. The essays tell hard-won tales wrestled sometimes from great pain." The twenty powerful essays in this volume are culled from periodicals ranging from The Sun to The New Yorker, from Crab Orchard Review to Vanity Fair. In "Missing Bellow," Scott Turow reflects on the death of an author he never met, but one who "overpowered me in a way no other writer had." Adam Gopnik confronts a different kind of death, that of his five-year-old daughter's pet fish -- a demise that churns up nothing less than "the problem of consciousness and the plotline of Hitchock's Vertigo." A pet is center stage as well in Susan Orlean's witty and compassionate saga of a successful hunt for a stolen border collie. Poe Ballantine chronicles a raw-nerved pilgrimage in search of salvation, solace, and a pretty brunette, and Laurie Abraham, in "Kinsey and Me," journeys after the man who dared to plumb the mysteries of human desire. Marjorie Williams gives a harrowing yet luminous account of her life with cancer, and Michele Morano muses on the grammar of the subjunctive mood while proving that "in language, as in life, moods are complicated, but at least in language there are only two."

简介:Drawing extensively upon the poet's unpublished manuscripts—poems, journals, essays, and letters—as well as all his published works, Marjorie Perloff presents Frank O'Hara as one of the central poets of the postwar period and an important critic of the visual arts. Perloff traces the poet's development through his early years at Harvard and his interest in French Dadaism and Surrealism to his later poems that fuse literary influence with elements from Abstract Expressionist painting, atonal music, and contemporary film. This edition contains a new Introduction addressing O'Hara's homosexuality, his attitudes toward racism, and changes in poetic climate cover the past few decades. "A groundbreaking study. [This book] is a genuine work of criticism. . . . Through Marjorie Perloff's book we see an O'Hara perhaps only his closer associates saw before: a poet fully aware of the traditions and techniques of his craft who, in a life tragically foreshortened, produced an adventurous if somewhat erratic body of American verse."—David Lenson, Chronicle of Higher Education "Perloff is a reliable, well-informed, discreet, sensitive . . . guide. . . . She is impressive in the way she deals with O'Hara's relationship to painters and paintings, and she does give first-rate readings of four major poems."—Jonathan Cott, New York Times Book Review
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 It is axiomatic that English people came to understand their places in society differently by the late seventeenth century. This collection explores how that happened by exploring how membership in communities was defined, and how individuals and corporate groups acted out their understanding of their places in society. Keith Wrightson’s powerful exploration of how concepts of neighborliness evolved as the economy changed is joined with Marjorie K. McIntosh’s work on changing identity politics in market towns. The confusions over identity and community inherent in border towns are taken up by K.J. Kesselring, while David Dean examines the mnemonic devices used in the Elizabethan Lottery to understand how people saw their communities. The overlapping worlds of London, Court and country are portrayed by Alexandra Johnston and Joseph Ward, while Catherine Patterson looks at the rhetoric of urban magistracy. The complexity of London’s communities is explored by Shannon McSheffrey in her work on the liminal place of the late medieval clergy and sexual morality; by Ian Archer in his portrait of the charity of London widows; and by Paul Griffiths in a concluding chapter on the rhetorics of London’s civil and religious identity, as seen in the discussions of growth that swirled around the building of Bridewell Hospital. 简介:This collection--at once insightful, funny and sad--digs into the psyche of the nation's capital. Marjorie Williams knew Washington from top to bottom. Beloved for her sharp analysis, elegant prose and exceptional ability to intuit character, Williams wrote political profiles for the Washington Post and Vanity Fair that came to be considered the final word on the capital's most powerful figures. Her accounts of playing ping-pong with Richard Darman, of Barbara Bush's stepmother quaking with fear at the mere thought of angering the First Lady, and of Bill Clinton angrily telling Al Gore why he failed to win the presidency--to name just three treasures collected here--open a window on a human reality behind Washington's determinedly blank fa莽ade. During her last years, she wrote about her own mortality as she battled liver cancer, using this harrowing experience to illuminate larger points about the nature of power and the randomness of life.--From publisher description.
简介:Richly plotted, animated by beautifully realized characters, and steeped in magnificent old-world detail, Malkeh and Her Children is the captivating epic of the remarkable Mandelkern family as they weather the storm of the Russian Revolution. At the family's center stands the indomitable Malkeh, an intelligent and beautiful woman, who marries Yoysef, an itinerant tailor. Together, the young couple embrace the simple joys and traditions of Jewish life in a tightly knit Russian city. But soon their safe world is shattered with the dawn of the tsar's reign of terror. As famines and cholera epidemics sweep the nation, the Jews swiftly become scapegoats, with the Russian peasants taking their revenge in violent pogroms. Against this land torn by revolution and bloodshed, Malkeh and Yoysef's children must grow up and pursue their own destinies. In a novel that sweeps from provincial life in a Jewish ghetto, to the streets of Lenin's St. Petersburg, rife with revolt, to Moscow in the chaos after the civil war, author Marjorie Edelson has woven a timeless tapestry of the old country with both its torments and its joys. Malkeh and Her Children is a loving evocation of powerful family values and traditions -- an imaginative work of love and hope that transports us into the life of a proud woman, whose courage and love will leave no one unmoved.

简介: Penthouses and their luxury apartment counterparts have always had a glamorous history. They speak of prestige, luxury living high in the sky and of course a certain amount of social elevation. Heiresses, millionaires, media moguls and movie stars have known of the exclusivity, mystery, sophistication and symbolism of high-rise living for decades, ever since Marjorie Merriweather Post Hutton commissioned a 54-room triplex on New York's Fifth Avenue in 1925 with a silver room, a wine room, and a cold storage for her furs. Eighty years on, such places have become the ultimate architectural expression of success, or at least inner urban living at its very best. They also offer some of the most extraordinary views in residential living. View From The Top goes inside the private spaces of some of the world's most magnificent penthouses and apartments and offers a rare insight into not only the designs and lifestyles experienced in these palatial 'mansions in the sky' but also a look at their amazing
