简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 The Vulgate Bible, compiled and translated in large part by Saint Jerome at the turn of the fifth century CE, was used continuously from early medieval times through the twentieth century in the Western Christian (and, later, specifically Catholic) tradition. Its significance can hardly be overstated. The text influenced literature, Visual art, music, and education in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and its contents lay at the heart of much of Western theological, intellectual, artistic, and even political history of those periods, At the end of the sixteenth century, as Protestant vernacular Bibles 'became available, professors at a Catholic college first at Douay, then at Rheims, translated The Vulgate Bible into English, among other reasons to combat the influence of rival theologies. This volume elegantly and affordably presents in Latin and English the text of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible, beginning with the creation of the world and the human race, continuing with the Great Flood, God's covenant with Abraham, Israel's -flight from Egypt and wanderings through the wilderness, the laws revealed to Moses, his mustering of the twelve tribes of Israel, and ending on the eve of Israel's introduction into the Promised Land. This is the first installment of five projected volumes in a complete set of The Vulgate Bible. Swift Edgar is a research assistant at the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection. 简介: How can we achieve and sustain a "decent" liberal society, one that aspires to justice and equal opportunity for all and inspires individuals to sacrifice for the common good? In this book, a continuation of her explorations of emotions and the nature of social justice, Martha Nussbaum makes the case for love. Amid the fears, resentments, and competitive concerns that are endemic even to good societies, public emotions rooted in love--in intense attachments to things outside our control--can foster commitment to shared goals and keep at bay the forces of disgust and envy. Great democratic leaders, including Abraham Lincoln, Mohandas Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr., have understood the importance of cultivating emotions. But people attached to liberalism sometimes assume that a theory of public sentiments would run afoul of commitments to freedom and autonomy. Calling into question this perspective, Nussbaum investigates historical proposals for a public "civil religion" or "religion of humanity" by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, August Comte, John Stuart Mill, and Rabindranath Tagore. She offers an account of how a decent society can use resources inherent in human psychology, while limiting the damage done by the darker side of our personalities. And finally she explores the cultivation of emotions that support justice in examples drawn from literature, song, political rhetoric, festivals, memorials, and even the design of public parks. "Love is what gives respect for humanity its life," Nussbaum writes, "making it more than a shell." "Political Emotions" is a challenging and ambitious contribution to political philosophy.

简介: A riveting historical narrative of the heart-stopping events surrounding the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and the first work of history from mega-bestselling author Bill O'Reilly The anchor of The O'Reilly Factorrecounts one of the most dramatic stories in American history—how one gunshot changed the country forever. In the spring of 1865, the bloody saga of America's Civil War finally comes to an end after a series of increasingly harrowing battles. President Abraham Lincoln's generous terms for Robert E. Lee's surrender are devised to fulfill Lincoln's dream of healing a divided nation, with the former Confederates allowed to reintegrate into American society. But one man and his band of murderous accomplices, perhaps reaching into the highest ranks of the U.S. government, are not appeased. In the midst of the patriotic celebrations in Washington D.C., John Wilkes Booth—charismatic ladies' man and impenitent racist—murders Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre. A furious manhunt ensues and Booth immediately becomes the country's most wanted fugitive. Lafayette C. Baker, a smart but shifty New York detective and former Union spy, unravels the string of clues leading to Booth, while federal forces track his accomplices. The thrilling chase ends in a fiery shootout and a series of court-ordered executions—including that of the first woman ever executed by the U.S. government, Mary Surratt. Featuring some of history's most remarkable figures, vivid detail, and page-turning action, Killing Lincolnis history that reads like a thriller.
简介:IN 1619 IN Jamestown, Virginia, an observer of the times remarked matter-of-factly in his diary, "There came in a Dutch man-of-warre that sold us 20 negars." With no more fanfare than this, American slavery had begun. By 1860, a greatly distressed Abraham Lincoln felt compelled to note that nearly one-sixth of the total population of the so-called "land of the free" consisted, of slaves. In America, the institution of slavery was based solely on race - - not religion, not class. Thus from the ve更多>>
简介:Abraham Pais's life of Albert Einstein was one of the finest scientific biographies ever written. When it first appeared in 1982, Christian Science Monitorcalled it "an extraordinary biography of an extraordinary man," and Timothy Ferris, in The New York Times Book Review, said it was "the biography of Einstein he himself would have liked best," adding that "it is a work against which future scientific biographies will be measured." As a respected physicist himself, Pais was the first biographer to give Einstein's thinking its full due, yet despite the occasional high level of science needed to discuss Einstein's ideas, the book was a national bestseller. Indeed, it was one of The New York Times's Best Books of the Year, and the winner of the 1983 American Book Award for Science. Now Pais turns to Niels Bohr, to illuminate the life and thought of another giant of 20th-century physics. Bohr was the first to understand how atoms were put together, he played a major role in shaping the theory of the atomic nucleus, he decoded the atomic spectrum of hydrogen, an achievement which marks him as the founder of the quantum dynamics of atoms, and his concept of complementarity (which provides the philosophical underpinning for quantum theory) qualifies him as one of the twentieth century's greatest philosophers. Pais covers all of these achievements with sophistication and clarity, but he also reveals the many other facets of the man. Perhaps most important, he shows that Bohr was not only a great scientist, but also a great nurturer of young scientific talent, acting as father figure extraordinaire for several generations of physicists. Bohr's Institute of Theoretical Physics, which he founded in Copenhagen and for which he tirelessly raised funds, was the world's leading center for physics all through the 1920s and 1930s, the birthplace of Heisenberg's papers on the uncertainty relations, Dirac's first paper on quantum electrodynamics, and other pivotal works. And Pais reveals as well the personal side of Bohr, the avid reader and crossword puzzle solver (Bohr loved Icelandic sagas, Goethe and Schiller, Dickens and Mark Twain--while studying in England early in his career, he improved his English by reading The Pickwick Paperswith a dictionary to one side); his aid to Jews and other refugees in the 1930s and during the war; the tragic loss of his son Christian (who died in a sailing accident right before Bohr's eyes); and his attempts during and after the war to promote openness between East and West, meeting with both Roosevelt and Churchill (the former was quite courteous, the latter lectured Bohr like a schoolboy). Bohr's research, his teaching, his friendships with the major scientists of our time, his aid to refugees, his role as philosopher, administrator, and fund raiser, his devotion to science and to his family--all these qualities are illuminated by Pais in a marvelous biography that captures the essence of one of the best-loved figures of this century.

简介:A precursor of modern academic journals, this quarterly periodical, published between 1810 and 1829 and now reissued in forty volumes, was founded and edited by Abraham John Valpy (1787-1854). Educated at Pembroke College, Oxford, Valpy established himself in London as an editor and publisher, primarily of classical texts. Edmund Henry Barker (1788-1839), who had studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, became a contributor and then co-editor of this journal, which fuelled a scholarly feud with the editors of the Museum criticum (1813-26), a rival periodical (also reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection). Although its coverage overlapped with that of its competitor, the Classical Journal also included general literary and antiquarian articles as well as Oxford and Cambridge prize poems and examination papers. It remains a valuable resource, illuminating the development of nineteenth-century classical scholarship and academic journals. Volume 1 contains the March and June issues for 1810.

简介:The Cold War with the Soviet Union may be over, but America is now at war with itself. Citizens are raising their voices against other citizens who hold opposing views. How can we reconcile these competing perspectives? What does it mean to call yourself a patriot when your opponent believes you are a traitor? If, as Abraham Lincoln warned us, "a house divided against itself cannot stand," will America fall apart, or can a new patriotism be born out of these conflicts? In A House Divided, Mark Gerzon, co-founder of the Rockefeller Foundation project The Common Enterprise, a network of community-building efforts to find common ground, invites us to move beyond these divisive, polarizing views. Gerzon's work has taken him and his colleagues into the heart of the most bitter community disputes in the country. There he discovered the America that is divided not into geographic states, but into states of belief about what is good for this country. In his book he journeys through these Divided States of America: Patria, Corporatia, Disia, Media, Gaia, and Officia. He lets each state speak for itself, so that we can understand what each believes and why. He shows how "new patriots" from each of these six states are working successfully with their opponents to heal seemingly insurmountable conflicts, reuniting our divided house and safeguarding America's soul. Without taking sides or joining the battle, Gerzon lays bare the many causes for strife in our country and describes clearly what must be done for America to become once again the United States.
简介:The Merchant of Modernismexamines how the figure of the economic Jew symbolizes the struggle of authors from Dickens to Pound to reconcile their critique of capitalism with their own literary practices and how the shifting of the representations of this figure parallels the development of literary Modernism. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Willa Cather, T.S. Eliot, D.H. Lawrence, Wyndham Lewis, Ezra Pound, and James Joyce documents major shifts and events in capitalism, their impact on literature, and advances in economic thought. The Merchant of Modernismprovides a sophisticated analysis of the role of economic history and economic thought in shaping both literary Modernism and modern anti-Semitism.

简介:Coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, this concise biographical study examines and compares the mythical and the historical Lincoln. With many anecdotes and insights Oates traces the course of the real Lincoln, who rose to national prominence in the turbulent 1850s and who grew from the inexperienced, hesitant and melancholy President of 1861 into the tough, visionary leader of 1863-65. Offering a provocative explanation for why historians still rank Lincoln as the best President he probes such questions as: Was he a white supremacist? Did the Emancipation Proclamation really free any blacks? Was Lincoln tenderhearted about reconstructing the conquered South? He also describes the assassination and provides a fair and empathetic reassessment of Mary Todd Lincoln.

简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 A new English translation of one of the most important and influential of Kierkegaard's works. Publisher Summary 2 In this rich and resonant work, Soren Kierkegaard reflects poetically and philosophically on the biblical story of God's command to Abraham, that he sacrifice his son Isaac as a test of faith. Was Abraham's proposed action morally and religiously justified or murder? Is there an absolute duty to God? Was Abraham justified in remaining silent? In pondering these questions, Kierkegaard presents faith as a paradox that cannot be understood by reason and conventional morality, and he challenges the universalist ethics and immanental philosophy of modern German idealism, especially as represented by Kant and Hegel. This volume presents the first new English translation for twenty years, by Sylvia Walsh, together with an introduction by C. Stephen Evans which examines the ethical and religious issues raised by the text.
