简介
In this volume in "Twayne's Masterwork Studies," Adler weaves a variety of critical approaches--literary-historical, sociocultural, psychological, and feminist--to analyze Tennessee Williams' complex play. He seeks to restore Blanche DuBois as the play's central character, a position that previous interpretations have allocated to Stanley Kowalski. Adler focuses on the form of the play and argues that its structure reflects Blanche's journey to isolation as she faces rejection from the established communities around her. He devotes individual chapters to the main characters--Blanche, Stella, Stanley, and Mitch--and also examines patterns of imagery, the use of secular and religious ritual, and the ways in which Williams treats the relationship between illusion and reality.
