据该书主编、歌唱家李双江介绍说：“《长征路上的歌》是文献库的第一辑，收入了《工农兵联合起来》、《八一大天亮》等40首歌，力图通过这些歌曲展示我军的音乐成就，展现我军的光辉历程。在这本文献中，每一首歌都有‘历史背景’、‘歌词大意’、‘教学及表演提示’，是一部集文献和普及于一体的音乐读物。”
《长征路上的歌》所选编的歌曲就并非全是土地革命时期产生的歌曲，建国后创作的反映土地劳动革命时期我军战斗生活的歌曲也被选入其中，并在兼顾艺术性与历史感的前提下对曲目进行了大胆的取舍。《长征路上的歌》中的文字阐释也耗费了巨大的精神力。用有限的文字介绍歌曲反映的历史事件，交代其历史背景，分析音乐结构，阐明语言形式及音乐风格上的特点，并作了教学及表演提示。
