《多元的梦想：“百纳被”审美与托尼·莫里森的艺术诉求》以“穿针引线”开始，综述了莫里森小说在国内外学界的接受和反应，建构起“百衲被”审美理论的学理意义。“剪布片——文本碎片聚集”一章剪取、展现了散落于莫里森小说中无处不在的文本碎片，以此构成作者缝制自己“批评之被”的第二步。“碎片拼缀来的布块”是作者开始连缀自己“批评之被”布块的开始，从叙事学角度论述了莫里森小说中时断时续的叙述是如何把故事情节阻隔成个性鲜明的“布块”，并以此凸显莫里森的艺术诉求的。第五章“缝缀记忆：历史片段拾遗”作者阐述了莫里森是如何在自己的文学百衲被中缝缀起美国黑人的历史记忆的。第六章“被面上的花饰”作者从文体学角度，分词汇偏离、语义偏离、语法偏离和书写(音系)偏离四部分探讨了莫里森小说中的语言偏离现象如何像被面上的饰品一样。第七章是作者对自己的“批评之被”的最终缝合。作者主要聚焦莫里森在其文化百衲被缝制完成后所面临的问题，并从中析解出莫里森更深层的梦想。作者没有就此辍笔，而是就“百衲被”审美理论本身在全球化视野下所呈现出的发展态势和局限性做了辩证的分析和思考，进而使其理论运用既求实、客观，又富有普适性和前瞻性。
