Book Description
Wordsworth Classics covers a huge list of beloved works of literature in English and translations. This growing series is rigorously updated, with scholarly introductions and notes added to new titles.
This novel is set against the infamous "No Popery" riots that were instigated by Lord Geroge Gordon in 1780, and terrorized London for days. Prejudice, intolerance, religious and nationalistic fervour, together with the villains who would exploit these political ends are Dicken's targets.
From School Library Journal
Grade 7-12-Dicken's tale of private lives and public events takes place in the unrest of the 1780's London. This BBC production includes a full cast, music, and sound effects.
From AudioFile
This story was originally produced for BBC broadcast by talented creators of radio entertainment. Complete with sound effects, beguiling music, and a full cast of characters, this classic story is full of complicated conflicts, murder, blackmail and private tragedies. London in the 1870's is full of unrest and discontent. Model citizen Geoffrey Haredale combines efforts with a questionable character, John Chester, to break up the marriage between Haredale's niece and Chester's son. The cast of performers is superb, and the production possesses both the authenticity of a radio broadcast and the novelties of a theater production. B.J.P.
The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature
Historical novel by Charles Dickens, published in 1841. Barnaby Rudge was Dickens' first attempt at a historical novel. It is set in the late 18th century and presents with great vigor and understanding (and some ambivalence of attitude) the spectacle of large-scale mob violence. In a case of mistaken identification, Barnaby Rudge, the mentally retarded son of a murderer, is arrested as a leader of a mob of anti-Catholic rioters. Subsequently jailed and sentenced to death, he is pardoned at the scaffold.
