The pivot of Baxter's study is the live and career of al-Muhajiroun's founder Omar Bakri Muhammad. His plan to interview Bakri in Britain was foiled by the July 7 attacks, and when he was able to interview him, in Lebanon in July 2007, he told a very different story of his life than he had told, and had allowed to be told about him, in Britain. Baxter weaves the two versions together as he explores Islamic theory, multiculturalism, Islam in the West, media culture, and Bakri's public profile.
