简介
本书是一本口语教程，但与一般教材具有以下不同。
1.它是一本和《大学英语》精读教材第三或第四册配套使用的教材。读者是大学英语最后一个学期并准备参加四、六级口试的学生。它的特点是弥补了目前几套大学英语精读教材中缺乏话题讨论或缺乏针对性强的话题讨论的缺陷。学完本教材，对是提高他们阐述的口语能力，参加四、六级口试具有一定的帮助。（当然，中、高级口语班的学生也可使用。）
2.现在大学英语一般是5-6课时完成一个单元的教学。除了4-5课时用来处理精读课文等外，剩下的一个课时往往用来组织课堂讨论。本书就是为这个课时提供材料和方法。因为每个话题的讨论是以45-50分钟一节课设计的。
3.本书提供了许多有趣而又富有想象力的话题。这些话题和大学英语的课文题材，尤其是四、六级口试题目密切相关，同时又反映了中国社会和中国大学生的一些热点问题。这样不仅可以改变学生在口语课上无话可说的状况，而且讨论的东西都是现实社会需要的，也是大学生感兴趣的。
4.就形式而言，本书中是以图片，图表，新闻等手段展开专题讨论的。这不仅和四、六级口试的项目设置一致，更重要的是和《大纲》培养学生连贯表达自己的思想的能力和思考问题的能力一致。
5.由于44个话题反映了不同内容，和不同的语言交际功能，如有解释原因的，进行比较的，表明态度的等，因而具有一定的实用性和独立性。读者可根据需要（如精读课文内容任意挑选一个进行讨论，不必也不应按先后次序。如学期结束要参加四、六级口试的，可直接在前四章挑选话题。
