The Frankfurt School's Institute for Social Research is perhaps most associated with Adorno's The Authoritarian Personality (1950). In this second volume of the first large-scale English translation of Gruppenexperiment (Group Experiment), the school's first major postwar project, sociologists Perrin (U. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and Olick (U. of Virginia) introduce the school's history, and the writings of Theodore W. Adorno (1903-69) and Freidrich Pollock, its assistant director from 1928-59. The timely volume includes methodological notes of empirical research on public opinion in postwar Germany, a monograph on the language of passivity and role-playing, and translation of Adorno's "Opinion Research and Publicness" (1964).
