本书作者小腓特烈·G·坎平教授在宾夕法尼亚大学沃顿商学院讲授法律多年,现已荣休。坎平教授对美国法律史研究颇有心得。本书的雏形是其早在1959年为讲授“法律制度”而准备的讲义。本书第1版于163年以《法律历史:法与社会变迁》为题由Prentice-Hall,Inc出版社推出。1973年,本书第2版收入“美国法精要”丛书。现在加以景印书出版的是该书1990年版本。
