She examines the socioeconomic and cultural developments that shaped the practice of medicine, such as the way that the increasing competitiveness of the civil service exams, which caused many failed candidates to turn to medicine, and the rise of the number of clientele in the form of affluent merchants and gentry led to an increased competition over the qualifications of the ideal physician; the role of the state in the process of legitimation of Chinese medicine; and social networking between physicians and literati.
