简介

This introductory text for undergraduate and graduate research students combines humor, a step-by-step approach, and examples. It describes methods of textual analysis such as semiotic analysis, rhetorical analysis, ideological criticism, and psychoanalytic criticism. The section on qualitative research covers methods such as interviews, historical analysis, ethnomethodological research, and participant observation, while the section on quantitative research methods explains content analysis, surveys, and experiments. There is also a primer on descriptive statistics. A final section gives tips on writing research reports and warns of 19 common thinking errors to avoid. The book includes a 15-page glossary and humorous b&w drawings. This second edition contains new applications and exercises in each method chapter, plus new material on cultural codes and the work of Clothaire Rapaille, and a new explanation of reading analytically. Berger is affiliated with San Francisco State University. Annotation 漏2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
