Publisher Summary 1
The study of girls' media culture encompasses the representations themselves, their reception, their impact, and their production. Rooted in sociology and about a half dozen other disciplines, it's a vibrant field. The first wave was in the 1990s, and the second wave is bringing new areas of research and insight. This anthology offers a well-rounded survey of current scholarly work and represents efforts to go beyond the experiences of white middle class girls in America. Fifteen contributions address such topics as tomboys in Hollywood films, the queer imagination of Japan's early girls' culture, Annette Funicello and suburban ethnicity, popular culture and mass media in the 1940s and 1950s, African films and formation of good women, hip-hop identity, and girls' video production and YouTube. Editor Kearney (radio-television-film, U. of Texas, Austin) has brought together a diverse group of contributors for this stimulating collection.
