这本书适合任何想了解英国文学而又不知道如何着手的人阅读。书的宗旨是：一帮助人们了解他们所读的书在文学史上以及文学发展过程中所处的地位，把作品放回到其产生的时代背景中，以学术的眼光来看待文学作品如何发生作用，以求更加卓有成效地欣赏文学。 该书开宗明义提出了好书指南，确定了英国文学中公认的从乔叟到T.S.艾略特的重要作品。随后各章就小说、诗歌和戏剧的本质、历史和技巧进行了清晰的阐释，并以大量的例证对每一个文类予以说明，例证包括《大卫·科波菲尔》、《米德尔马契》、《尤利西斯》、《坎特伯雷故事集》、《失乐园》、《凡夫》、《浮土德博士》和《圣女贞德》。书的最后有一个讨论如何以创作为手段学习文学的附录，以及一个带有注释的参考书目。
