Guelcher (chemical engineering, Vanderbilt University) and Hollinger (Bone Tissue Engineering Center, Carnegie Mellon University) examine applications of biomaterials for patient care. Early chapters emphasize the assessment of biological performance and capability. Later chapters describe the synthesis, characterization, properties, and applications of specific classes of clinically significant natural and synthetic materials for both hard and soft tissue applications. Several chapters are dedicated to biomaterials design. A final section details clinical applications of biomaterials, with an emphasis on tissue engineering and implants, and covers standards, regulatory approaches, and testing paradigms.
