《牛津高阶》把学习词典普遍采用的以简释繁的原则贯彻得十分出色，在第六版中把原来用于释义的3500词减至3000词，删削幅度达1/7。释义文字的削减符合我们中国人古话说的“辞尚体要，不惟好异”的道理；只求达意，不图妍巧，更是释文写作更高一层的境界。释义文字的削减还给非英语民族学生另一种启示，那就是学外语词汇量固然重要，但决非绝对的决定性因素。
《牛津高阶》第六版一方面继承传统，注意教会学生活用，另一方面并不一味法故，而是根据语料库语言学最新的研究成果，遴选收录新词、新义4500条，以至收词总数多达八万，是为《牛津高阶》问世以来之最。
