简介

Summary: Publisher Summary 1 Organized by the UK-based Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research, the 12th Nitrogen Workshop was devoted to the theme that provided the title for this collection of 184 papers considering how control of nitrogen can mitigate air and water pollution and still allow agricultural productivity. The papers are organized into seven sections, the first six of which identify "drivers towards sustainability"; consider options for matching nitrogen supply with demand in the nitrogen farm budget; explore reasons for and means of controlling nitrogen losses to air and water; describe aspects of reconciling productivity with environmental considerations; and present relevant mathematical models. A final section contains reports from the themed working groups of the workshop, debating such questions as the possibilities of integrating fertilizer and manure use, possibilities for controlling gaseous nitrogen emissions, the relative necessity of system studies, and possible improvements to the reliability and applicability of model answers.
