简介

Summary: Publisher Summary 1 Most studies of old watermills and windmills provide a technical description of the type of mill, and an account of its chronological development and geographical diffusion. Lucas, a researcher and policy analyst in the New South Wales Cabinet Office, partially follows the pattern for the first two chapters. But, he says, that approach attributes more certainty to the information than is warranted, and glosses over larger issues of how society and the environment shape and are shaped by technological development. Looking in turn at agricultural and industrial milling, he considers such aspects as the technology in the first millennium CE, the role of monasteries in medieval England, whether there was an industrial revolution in the middle ages based on water power, and the medieval Welsh fulling industry.
