Publisher Summary 1
Kamada (writing, literature, and publishing; Emerson College, Massachusetts) examines three writers who have made their postcolonial landscapes a central motif in their works, showing how the landscapes they describe bear strong marks of a romantic inheritance. They use romantic terms to evoke the landscapes of their postcolonial communities, he says, in order to refigure and radically re-imagine these same landscapes in ways that reflect embryonic and interventionist nationalist sensibilities during historical times. He discusses Jamaica Kincaid's unreal beauty in Trenchtown Rocks, Garrett Hongo's postcolonial poetic in Once Out of Nature, and Derek Walcott and the education of the postcolonial in His Company of Visionaries.
