简介

Recounts the history of herbal medicine in the United States, from Samuel Thomson's challenge to the medical orthodoxy in 1790 to the closure of the Eclectic Medical College in 1939. Berman (emeritus, historical studies in pharmacy, U. of Cincinnati) and Flannery (Historical Collections, U. of Alabama, Birmingham) discuss the treatments and pharmacopias of Thomsonians, Neo-Thomsonians, physio- medicalists, and eclectic practitioners. The emergence of interest in herbal medicine the 1960s and its recent popularity in the United States are discussed in the final chapter. Also included are a catalog of 19th century medicinal plants, a libelous editorial attacking members of one of the schismatic groups, patented formulas for medicines, and advertisements listing vegetable medicines for sale.
