1944年，太平洋鏖战方酣，为了战争的胜利和战后合理地处置日本，美国政府急需了解日本民族的文化和生活特性，于是委托学者、专家对日本进行详细的研究。鲁思·本尼迪克特就是其中之一，她利用文化人类学的方法，从日常生活细节中去解读日本人的思维方式和习惯，其研究的成果就是《菊与刀》。此书自1946年出版以来就成为了解日本民族精神的经典之作。
菊是日本皇家家徽，刀是武士文化的象征，作者以这两件物品来象征日本人的矛盾性格，亦即日本文化的双重性，由此入手，进而分析日本社会的等级制及有关习俗，并指出日本的幼儿教育和成人教养是形成双重性格的重要因素。著者把日本文化的特征概括为“耻感文化”，认为它是与西方的“罪感文化”不同，其强制力在于外部社会而不在于人的内心。
