本书具有以下特点:
一、本书在体系安排上作了新的尝试,突出了教育的相对独立性、教育自身发展的规律性和阶段性,而不是撕裂教育自身发展的历史关联,去屈从教育外部的历史事件,同时又注意了教育发展的历史大背景。
二、本书对历代学制的论述比较周详、完备、系统。且在前人基础上有所斟酌损益,对历史经验的总结匠心独具。
三、对教育思潮的论述,突破了以孤立的个人为中心的旧轨,本书注重上下衔接,纵横沟通,着力于剖解流派,考究源流,既溯其所自来,又辨其所当类,更明其所由去,读之颇觉脉络清晰,条理井然,褒贬有据,发人深省。
四、对各别教育家,作者摒弃了“一时代、二生平、三世界观、四教育作用、五教育目的……”的八股格式,而是区别对待。重点人物略述其生平,次要人物则开门见山,直陈其教育主张,不强行拼凑每个人物的世界观,不斤斤于在政治上给古人“定性”、定位。对于教育家的教育思想或主张,不是将内容硬性塞进现代教育学的框架,给古人披上时装,而是从实际出发,据史料立论,突出个性,从历史人物的原著中提取醒目的标题,避免了众人一貌。
五、本书对教育史实和历史人物的评鉴贯彻了历史唯物主义原理,有阶级分析而不妄贴阶级标签;重视经济、政治对教育的制约而不轻视教育的相对独立性和自身特点;不以政治上的是非和世界观的高下定教育观的臧否;是其所当是而非其所当非。
六、本书文理通顺,文字简练、清新、活泼,可读性强。
