本书几乎涉及作者语言理论的所有重要方面，是了解系统功能语言学基本思想的形成和发展的必读之书，书中收录了作者于1972年至1976抻期间写成的13篇文章。有两点从一开始就需要引起注意。一是写于不同时间的13篇文章之所以能放在一起编成一本专著，是因为它们有着共同的主题，即都把语言看作是一种社会符号，并力图从社会和文化的角度对语言的性质和意义进行了诠释。二是这些文章在内容上有若干重叠之处，如语域、语境、语言系统以及语言与教育之间的关系等论题多次出现，甚至贯穿于全书始终，因而我们写导读时没有严格按照文章编排的顺序，而是打破了章节的界限，抓住几个关键的问题进行评价，以帮助读者较快地了解和掌握全书的精髓。
